The introduction of performance based building codes has facilitated an extended use of timber structures in multi-storey buildings, e g in the Nordic countries, but the use of visible wood is still limited. Wood facade claddings are increasingly requested by architects as an esthetical feature not only in timber buildings. Therefore, a series of facade fire tests have been performed according to the Swedish/Nordic full scale facade test SP Fire 105. The test simulates a three-storey building with a flashover fire in a room at the bottom floor. The duration of fire is 15 to 20 minutes and the fire exposure exhibits a rise and decay as at real fire conditions. The fire scenario with flames out of a window after flashover is the most severe scenario for facade claddings.
