Stone Chip Damage: Car Owner Behaviors in Sweden, Norway, and FinlandThis report describes two project activities that were focused on car owners’ attitudes towards, and handling of stone chip damage on vehicles in Sweden, as well as a comparison between Sweden, Finland and Norway. Results are based on two survey studies sent out to participants in Sweden (Swedish survey), and to participants in three Nordic countries: Sweden, Finland and Norway (Nordic survey). Survey results revealed that most stone chips happen on motorways and paved roads, particularly during the winter months. Car owners often postpone repairs, which increases the likelihood of windshield replacement rather than repair. Glass specialists are commonly visited for repairs, while brand workshops are preferred for replacements. Environmental considerations are rarely factored into decision-making, with windshield function ranked as the most important aspect. Although regional and national differences exist in behaviors and regulations—such as insurance terms and road safety rules—no significant differences were found between countries in the choice between repair and replacement. The findings highlight the need for increased awareness of insurance details and the potential benefits of timely repairs.
