Charging needs of leisure boats – possibilities to use analysis of AIS data The project FRITIDSLADD developed methods for using data from AIS-B, e.g. segmentation algorithms. The starting point was that analysis of AIS-B data would provide opportunities to include smaller boats in AIS analyses. It was investigated how AIS-B can be used to map recreational boats' usage patterns. This report describes the work that has been carried out. AIS-B data has been made available for analysis. Application was tested with analysis of usage patterns in terms of speed, mileage and length of stay in port for two ports on the west coast. The report also describes several challenges related to data quality regarding AIS-B. Overall, transmitter power, refresh rate, antenna height and geography mean that data from Class B is less reliable than for Class A. For analysis of traffic patterns, this means that you cannot always rely on the accuracy of positions for a particular boat. At the end of the report, suggestions are made for further in-depth study.
