Components packaged in so called tape-and-reel packages have been shown to be electrostatically charged when rattling in the package. These charges induce charges on the printed circuit board when the components are placed on it in automatic placement machines. This could lead to electrostatic discharge events that damage sensitive components. Especially the packages used for passive components are very chargeable. The ultimate solution is to exchange the package material, but intermediate actions have to be taken by component manufacturers, placement machine manufacturers, component buyers and electronic equipment manufacturers.
