    The pan-European “European Plate Observing System (EPOS)” is focussed on Europe and adjacent regions and includes geophysical monitoring networks, local observations (including permanent in-situ and volcano observatories), topographic/surface dynamics information, surface and subsurface geological information, experimental and laboratory data and functions, and satellite data. In 2021 the Swedish Research Council (VR) approved an application for Sweden to join EPOS-ERIC, formally establishing existing collaborations between EPOS and Swedish research infrastructures.

    Abstract [en]

    The bowing phenomenon is so relevant that two projects, EU funded, from 1999 studied it and a European Standard to assess the resistance to thermal and moisture cycles (influencing bowing) has been recently adopted. In particular, according EN 16306: 2013, measurements of bowing and flexural strength should be performed before and at the end of the ageing cycles. Additional non-destructive tests are recommended, but are not compulsory for the standard. Moreover, Annex A of EN 16306 contains guidance on the limit values for the selection of marble types suitable for outdoor uses, especially façade applications. Eleven varieties of marble have been tested by means of this laboratory ageing test. Non-destructive tests such as the measurements of ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), adjacent grains analysis, open porosity, and water absorption have been executed together with the conventional flexural strength test. The results obtained from image analysis on thin sections indicate that the AGA index may not always be correlated with the other tests: amount of bowing, loss of flexural strength, or loss of UPV. Some consideration of the decrease in mechanical resistance and the bowing in relation to the variety of marble tested and the limit values indicated in Annex A of EN 16306 can be noted. It is known that bowing and rapid strength loss occur in some varieties of marble when used as exterior cladding and other exterior applications. Additional conclusions have been drawn: bowing and flexural strength correlate well and can be used to assess the suitability of the marble to be employed in outdoors.

    The European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) came into force the 1st of July 2013. Although much in the CPR and the harmonized product standards are clear and concise, some issues are still open for interpretation. In this paper, we give a brief background on the requirements associated with the CPR, from a natural stone perspective. Special conditions, like simplified test methods and responsibility for Factory Production Control, are presented. Finally, the pros and cons with the new CPR, as identified in continuous dialog with the Swedish natural stone industry, are ventilated.

    Abstract [sv]

    This report describes the combined results from a test program aiming to find the best results and requirements to a classification table for traffic classes in the use of slabs made of natural stone. One of the objectives of this report is to give contractors and engineers a better knowledge about the complexity of natural stone and from this find a better and easier way to dimension hard surfaces. Properties that were considered most important and investigated for this report are the following: Dimensions, test methods, flexural strength and wet or dry specimens. Of significant importance is also practical experience collected from contractors around Sweden. The conclusion is that there is a great complexity in the use of natural stone and that there is not always an easy way to determine what dimension is required for a specific traffic class. However, the results point in the same direction and the large number of tests being done with evaluations makes great assurance for the proposed classifica-tion table. Several suggestions for the road to future improvements of the testing and evaluation procedure, including the standard are also given.

    Assessment of mechanical durability properties of rock materials using quantitative microscopy and image analysis2003Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This report presents a project that focuses on the assessment of mechanical durability properties using quantitative microscopy. The project was financed by SGU under grant 03-1174/98. The aim has been to develop methods for assessment and presentation of rock quality data. Both optical and SEM/BSE microscopy were applied and combined with computerised image analysis and manual methods for the quantitative analysis. The first part of the project was to produce a literature overview of image analysis as applied to rock materials. A method for assessment of resistance to fragmentation of granitic rocks comparable with the Los Angeles test has been developed. By means of a quantitative description of foliation using a foliation index, FIX, it is possible to assess the potential length-thickness ratio of the crushed aggregate. Methods developed in the main part of the project have been applied in related areas. These include crack initiation and propagation under cyclic loading and cyclic thermal stress.

    Abstract [en]

    This report describes how to organise inter-comparison tests and how to statistically analyse the test results. In this report, relevant definitions, instructions, requirements and criteria from ISO, ASTM, EN standards, as well as national specifications are summarised and some examples of inter-comparison tests from practical applications are presented. The definitions of various terms commonly used in inter-comparison tests are given in Chapter 2. The complete procedures for organising inter-comparison tests are described in Chapter 3, while some useful statistical tools for analysing test results are given in Chapters 4 and 5. Practical applications of the precision test results are presented in Chapter 6 and, finally, the concluding remarks are given in Chapter 7.

    The use of thin marble and limestone for facade cladding has increased substantially during the last five decades. The durability of thin slabs (often only 30 mm thick) has been assumed to be satisfactory based on centuries of successful use as a structural building stone. Nevertheless, all over the world, the long-term deformation and strength loss of some claddings have led to concerns about its safe and durable use. The detailed assessment of marble and limestone within TEAM (see also www.sp.se/building/team) is used to develop a hypothesis for the observed deterioration and to develop remedial actions. This paper describes the field exposure sites, the accelerated test, and presents parts of the results. The results indicates that all marbles bow, but at different magnitudes. The marbles demonstrate diurnal and seasonal variation in bowing and dependence on the thickness and impregnation. The final evaluation of the results will be presented in 2005.

    Miljöförvaltningen inom Malmö stad gav RISE uppdraget att identifiera möjligheter att öka kolsänkorna inom kommungränsen. Syftet med den här rapporten är att sammanställa ett brett underlag för klimatarbete med åtgärder som möjliggör en ökning av de lokala kolsänkorna i Malmö stads geografiska område. Genom att uppskatta olika åtgärders potential för kolinlagring, teknisk mognadsgrad och kostnadseffektivitet från ett klimatperspektiv, samt visa på vilka skalor det går att jobba med dessa åtgärder inom kommunen, avses rapporteringen ge en översikt över vilka satsningar som kan göras för att kolsänkorna ska kunna bidra till Malmö stads miljö- och klimatmål. Forskargruppen från RISE har analyserat 18 olika kategorier som har potential att öka den lokala kolinlagringen inom: • de urbana grönområdena, • den urbana infrastrukturen, bebyggd mark och tillhörande mark • rural markanvändning och • övriga möjligheter. I beräkningarna ingår inte klimatpåverkan från insatser som krävs för att genomföra åtgärderna, till exempel avverkning, uppdrivning och plantering av skogsplantor, transport av timmer och förädling av virke. I rapporten tas inte hänsyn till om en ökad användning av mark i en kategori, minskar markanvändning inom en annan kategori.

    The use of thin marble and limestone for facade cladding has increased substantially during the last five decades. The durability of such thin slabs (often only 30 mm thick) has been assumed to be satisfactory based on centuries of successful use as a structural building stone. Nevertheless, all over the world, the long-term deformation and strength loss of some claddings have led to concerns about its safe and durable use. The detailed assessment of marble and limestone within TEAM (see also www.sp.se/building/team), is used to develop a hypothesis for the observed deterioration and to develop remedial actions. This paper considers the influence of rock and mineral properties on the behaviour of marble claddings. A selection of results is presented, illustrating the influence of properties like mineralogy, grain size and boundaries, preferred orientation and pore structure. Of the intrinsic parameters, the interlocking of the grains and the lattice preferred orientation seem to be very important influencing factors. The final evaluation of the results will be presented in 2005.
