    Abstract [en]

    The paper discusses the need for a reference environment for the characterization of small antennas intended to be used in multipath. The conclusion is that a good choice is the rich isotropic multipath environment as emulated by a well designed reverberation chamber, or possibly by a spherical array of antennas in an anechoic chamber. This is the only environment that enables a unique, objective and repeatable antenna characterization. This cannot be achieved in other environments. A few examples are given showing that the performances of different incremental antennas are very different and depend strongly on their orientations when they are located in a 2D horizontal multipath environment, with incident waves only in the horizontal plane, whereas their performances are equal and invariant to orientation when they are located in the rich isotropic multipath environment.

    Abstract [en]

    Antenna diversity gain for theoretical as well as measured antennas is studied in two extreme environments, the rich isotropic multipath environment (RIMP) and the random line-of-sight environment. The RIMP diversity gain was previously defined based on improved fading performance, here we equivalently consider it as a metric for the cumulative improvement of the 1% worst users randomly distributed in the RIMP environment. Similarly, we consider the diversity gain in the random line-of-sight environment to be the performance improvement of the 1% of the users which receives the weakest signal relative to a theoretical Rayleigh distribution of the signal levels among the users. The random line-of-sight environment is regarded as being caused by the statistics of an ensemble of users (or terminals) with arbitrary 3D orientations.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we revisit existing methods for measuring the shielding effectiveness of material samples using nested reverberation chambers. These methods have the advantage of exposing the sample with a more realistic environment than other methods that are based on single plane wave excitation. That is, in the reverberation chamber the sample is exposed to fields with different incidence directions and polarizations resulting in that the average shielding effectiveness can be measured. We show by comparison with aperture theory that the measured shielding effectiveness corresponds to the theoretical value. We show also by measurements that a corrugation or choke on the periphery of an aperture can be used for increasing the shielding effectiveness for a narrow frequency range.

    Abstract [en]

    Chase is one of a total of eighteen 'VTNN Excellence Centres' that are funded by VINNOVA, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems. The aim of these centres is to provide a forum for collaboration between the private and public sectors, universities and colleges, research institutes and other organisations that conduct research. The Chase centre was started in 2007 and has a budget of at least 23 million Euro over ten years with cash and in kind contributions. The research activities in Chase cover antennas and antenna system aspects, and the industrial interests are mainly in Wireless Communications, Remote Sensing and Medical Applications of Microwaves. The projects are chosen based on industrial needs, usefulness for society and global sustainability.

    In the previous measurement uncertainty work by Kildal, et al. (2012), the random line-of-sight (LOS) component in a reverberation chamber (RC) was assumed to be Gaussian distributed without quantitative justification. In the present paper, we apply goodness-of-fit (GOF) test to the measured LOS component samples to check its Gaussianity. It is shown that the Gaussianity hypothesis of the distribution of the random LOS component is accepted at most of the frequencies, which justifies the Gaussian LOS component assumption.

    It is commonly believed that a complex correlation of up to 0.5 in magnitude is negligible for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) performances and that the correlation affects the diversity gain or throughput only via its magnitude. In this work, we show that when the number of antenna ports is larger than two, the phase of the correlation coefficient affects the diversity gain and that even small correlation can severely degrade the throughput performance of MIMO systems with full spatial multiplexing and no diversity gain. We assume maximum ratio combining (MRC) to investigate the correlation effect on diversity gain and zero-forcing (ZF) equalizer to study the correlation effect on the MIMO throughput.

    Abstract [en]

    It has been shown that diversity gains and MIMO capacity of multi-port antennas can be conveniently determined from reverberation chamber measurements. In this paper, we first present the covariance eigenvalue approach and the embedded far field function method to determine diversity gain and MIMO capacity, respectively, for arbitrary multi-port antennas. Then, we discuss the convergence of the covariance eigenvalue approach. In the end, we apply both methods to compare MRC diversity gains and MIMO capacity measured in a reverberation chamber (based on direct channel measurements) and an anechoic chamber (based on measurements of the embedded far field functions and efficiencies at all antenna ports). The comparison is performed over 2-8 GHz using a wideband multi-port antenna in two configurations. There are in general good agreements between the reverberation and anechoic chamber measurement results.

    Abstract [en]

    A concept for multiple-input, multiple-output antenna arrays, integrated in an ultra-thin full metal cover laptop computer, is proposed. The antennas are for octa-band wireless wide area network (WWAN) and triple-band wireless local area network (WLAN) operation. The proposed solution makes use of the gap between the metallic display lid and keyboard chassis to form notch and slot antenna arrays, thereby removing the need for additional protrusions or openings. Simulated as well as measured performance is presented. The notch antenna array for WWAN exhibits wide impedance bandwidth, with more than 24 dB isolation from 690 MHz to 3 GHz, and a total efficiency better than -2.5 dB. The slot antenna array for WLAN shows more than 12 dB isolation and a total efficiency of more than -3 dB. Both arrays exhibit a very low envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.1 within their respective frequency bands.
