    Abstract [en]

    An in-depth study of the adsorption and micellization behaviour of a series of fatty amide ethoxylates is presented. The effect of the amide bond is studied as well as variations in unsaturations in the hydrocarbon chain and in the length of the oxyethylene headgroup. Ellipsometry is used to determine adsorption on a hydrophobic silica plate while 1H-NMR self-diffusion is used to study micelle size and structure. The amide bond was found to increase the hydrophilicity of the surfactant leading to less favourable packing at the interface. The micelles formed by these surfactants were more compact, compared to alcohol ethoxylates with the same hydrophobe. Effects of unsaturations on the interfacial packing were not be observed. The micelle structure was somewhat affected by the unsaturations due to increased bulkiness of the surfactant hydrophobe.

    Abstract [en]

    In this work the physicochemical behavior of a series of phytosterol ethoxylates in water is presented. The influence of the length of the polyoxyethylene chain is studied. The surfactant solutions have been examined by means of birifringent microscopy, surface tension, self diffusion 1H-NMR, dynamic and static light scattering, and rheology. The surfactants with a hydrophilic chain of 10 oxyethylene units or more gave a micellar region. The CMC values were generally very low and a reverse relationship between the CMC value and the polyoxyethylene chain length was obtained. The time required to reach equilibrium surface tension was very long, more then 150 minutes. For the hydrophobic surfactants large lamellar regions appeared while for the more hydrophilic surfactants cubic and hexagonal structures were present which remained stable up to temperatures of 100°C. In the micellar region prolate aggregates were formed which showed 'ghostlike' behavior, consisting of crossliked micelles with very fast relaxation times.

    Abstract [en]

    This work deals with the synthesis of multifunctional nanoparticles based on biocompatible di-block copolymer (PLGA-PEG) via an emulsion-evaporation method. To enable their visualization, these nanoparticles can be loaded with iron oxide nanoparticles for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and/or quantum dots for fluorescent microscopy. A therapeutic agent, Indomethacin, can also be loaded and released. The influence of synthesis parameters on nanoparticle size (in the range 70-150 nm) has been controlled to achieve specific cellular interactions avoiding possible immuno-response. These multifunctional nanoparticles possess excellent photoemission properties for fluorescent microscopy and enhanced contrast efficiency for T 2 MRI imaging compared to available agents used today. In-vitro experiments confirm the low cytotoxicity of such nanoparticles and their excellent visualization properties by MRI and fluorescence microscopy in cells and biological tissues.

    Abstract [en]

    The effect of the contact time between cationic polymers (polyacrylamides and cationic starches) and stock on retention and dewatering has been studied using a new type of equipment. Dewatering is carried out under low pressure and the addition of chemicals and other operations are controlled by a microprocessor. The retention often shows a maximum after a polymer contact time of 10-20 s. It is found that long contact times drastically reduce the effect of the added polymer. This is explained as being due to floc rupture, degradation of the polymer and poor reflocculation. The dewatering time is extremely sensitive to the polymer contact time and increases steadily with increasing contact time.

    The adsorption of cationic surfactant decyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride [965-32-2] by cellulose pulp was stronger and fairly const. above the crit. micellization concn. than that of anionic sodium p-octylbenzenesulfonate (I) [34309-63-2]. When I was added to unbleached pulp, solubilization occurred even at low concns. and increased with the concn. due to contaminants in the pulp. The self assocn. of the surfactants into micelles had a detg. effect on the adsorption by the cellulose fibers.
