    Low operating voltages for p-channel organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be achieved by using an electrolyte as the gate insulator. However, mobile anions in the electrolyte can lead to undesired electrochemistry in the channel. In order to avoid this, a polyanionic electrolyte is used as the gate insulator. The resulting OFET has operating voltages of less than 1€‰V (see figure) shows fast switching (less than 0.3€‰ms) in ambient atmosphere._x000D_

    Abstract [en]

    Electrical characterization of nanowires is a time-consuming and challenging task due to the complexity of single nanowire device fabrication and the difficulty in interpreting the measurements. We present a method to measure Hall effect in nanowires using a three-probe device that is simpler to fabricate than previous four-probe nanowire Hall devices and allows characterization of nanowires with smaller diameter. Extraction of charge carrier concentration from the three-probe measurements using an analytical model is discussed and compared to simulations. The validity of the method is experimentally verified by a comparison between results obtained with the three-probe method and results obtained using four-probe nanowire Hall measurements. In addition, a nanowire with a diameter of only 65 nm is characterized to demonstrate the capabilities of the method. The three-probe Hall effect method offers a relatively fast and simple, yet accurate way to quantify the charge carrier concentration in nanowires and has the potential to become a standard characterization technique for nanowires.

    Abstract [en]

    Heat-triggered fruit opening and delayed release of mature seeds are widespread among plants in fire-prone ecosystems. Here, the material characteristics of the seed-containing follicles of Banksia attenuata (Proteaceae), which open in response to heat frequently caused by fire, are investigated. Material analysis reveals that long-term dimensional stability and opening temperatures of follicles collected across an environmental gradient increase as habitats become drier, hotter, and more fire prone. A gradual increase in the biaxial curvature of the hygroscopic valves provides the follicles in the driest region with the highest flexural rigidity. The irreversible deformation of the valves for opening is enabled via a temperature-dependent reduction of the elastic modulus of the innermost tissue layer, which then allows releasing the stresses previously generated by shrinkage of the fiber bundles in the adjacent layer during follicle drying. These findings illustrate the level of sophistication by which this species optimizes its fruit opening mechanism over a large distribution range with varying environmental conditions, and may not only have great relevance for developing biomimetic actuators, but also for elucidating the species' capacity to cope with climatic changes.

    Abstract [en]

    Utilizing Sb-based bulk epilayers on large-scale low-cost substrates such as GaAs for fabricating infrared (IR) photodetectors is presently attracting significant attention worldwide. For this study, three sample series of GaAsxSb1−x, In1−xGaxSb, and InAsxSb1−x with different compositions were grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and appropriate InAs quantum dots (QDs) as a defect-reduction buffer layer. Photoluminescence (PL) signals from these samples were observed over a wide IR wavelength range from 2 μm to 12 μm in agreement with the expected bandgap, including bowing effects. In particular, interband PL signals from InAsxSb1−x and In1−xGaxSb samples even at room temperature show promising potential for IR photodetector applications.

    Abstract [en]

    When raceway conditions are changed, e.g blast parameters or selection of injection material, additional measurements and monitoring of raceway can support evaluation of the effects on raceway conditions. Two types of measurement methods have been tested during injection trials with BF flue dust at the SSAB EMEA BF in Oxelösund and the LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF®). The raceway depth was measured using microwave technique and a camera was installed for viewing the raceway when the peep hole was occupied by the depth measurements equipment. Temperature estimation was made on thermal radiation guided via an optical fibre from the raceway to a spectrometer. Evaluation methods were developed based on Planck radiation law. The measurement techniques and their use for monitoring of raceway conditions are discussed.

    In fiber-optic communications, evaluation of mutual information (MI) is still an open issue due to the unavailability of an exact and mathematically tractable channel model. Traditionally, lower bounds on MI are computed by approximating the (original) channel with an auxiliary forward channel. In this paper, lower bounds are computed using an auxiliary backward channel, which has not been previously considered in the context of fiber-optic communications. Distributions obtained through two variations of the stochastic digital backpropagation (SDBP) algorithm are used as auxiliary backward channels and these bounds are compared with bounds obtained through the conventional digital backpropagation (DBP). Through simulations, higher information rates were achieved with SDBP, which can be explained by the ability of SDBP to account for nonlinear signal--noise interactions

    Abstract [en]

    We present a comparative study of the influence of dispersion induced phase noise for n-level PSK systems. From the analysis, we conclude that the phase noise influence for classical homodyne/heterodyne PSK systems is entirely determined by the modulation complexity (expressed in terms of constellation diagram) and the analogue demodulation format. On the other hand, the use of digital signal processing (DSP) in homodyne/intradyne systems renders a fiber length dependence originating from the generation of equalization enhanced phase noise. For future high capacity systems, high constellations must be used in order to lower the symbol rate to practically manageable speeds, and this fact puts severe requirements to the signal and local oscillator (LO) linewidths. Our results for the bit-error-rate (BER) floor caused by the phase noise influence in the case of QPSK, 16PSK and 64PSK systems outline tolerance limitations for the LO performance: 5 MHz linewidth (at 3-dB level) for 100 Gbit/s QPSK; 1 MHz for 400 Gbit/s QPSK; 0.1 MHz for 400 Gbit/s 16PSK and 1 Tbit/s 64PSK systems. This defines design constrains for the phase noiseimpact in distributed-feed-back (DFB) or distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) semiconductor lasers, that would allow moving the system capacity from 100 Gbit/s system capacity to 400 Gbit/s in 3 years (1 Tbit/s in 5 years). It is imperative at the same time to increase the analogue to digital conversion (ADC) speed such that the single quadrature symbol rate goes from today's 25 GS/s to 100 GS/s (using two samples per symbol).

    Abstract [en]

    The temperature characteristics of the birefringence of side-hole fibers filled with liquids or metal are investigated, aiming at providing a basis for on/off temperature sensing. Short pieces of fiber are filled and the change in birefringence is registered using measurements in reflective mode of the transmitted power through a linear polarizer at 1550 nm. The rapid change in the birefringence behavior of the fiber at the temperature of the phase transition of the filler substance is shown, and from the measurement data the phase transition temperatures can be determined as well as an estimation of the birefringence change with temperature. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations.

    n this work we measure how photodarkening affects the optical efficiency for three different Yb/Al -doped silica fibers operating at 980€‰nm , one of which is codoped with cerium. A volume Bragg grating is used for linewidth control added rejection of amplified spontaneous emission. Several hours of degradation-resistant operation is obtained with the Ce-codoped fiber, while for the Yb/Al doped fibers a large drop in efficiency is observed within the first hour of operation. Our results show that Yb/Ce/Al -doped fibers could be excellent candidates for high-power 980€‰nm fiber laser sources._x000D_

    Abstract [en]

    To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gbit/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gbit/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave (MMW) and THz technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gbit/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gbit/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gbit/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultra-broadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, but also meet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungry short-range wireless applications.

The UWB radar system consists of two (Tx and Rx) antennas and one compact CMOS UWB transceiver. Several signal processing techniques are developed for the application. The system has been tested by real measurements. .

    The potential of impact-driven frequency up-conversion in a MEMS EH is evaluated using numerical simulations. The investigated design is compared to a conventional cantilever EH in terms of output power and loss rate. The upshifting can lead to significantly increased output power at a similar loss rate but as the time scale for the loss is long, the benefit is limited. This also requires an effective upshifting process. The design of the impact introduces a length scale that must be selected with excitation, gravity, and pre-stress taken into account. This makes this type of EH application-dependent as a non-optimal choice may result in low output power.

    During the manufacturing of MEMS components, slanted beams can be produced in the etching process. We show that this can be used to produce skew motion that causes deflection of a proof mass out of the device plane also when the excitation is confined to the device plane. This allows construction of an energy harvester that uses a planar manufacturing process and produces power also with in-plane excitation. To obtain this with traditional methods it would be necessary to manufacture separate components and then mount them with their sensitive axes orthogonal to each other.
