    Abstract [en]

    One of the major issues in a long-term perspective for the use of wood-plastic composites (WPCs) in outdoor applications is the moisture sensitivity of the wood component and the consequent dimensional instability and susceptibility to biological degradation of the composite. In this work, the effects of using an acetylated wood component and a cellulose ester as matrix on the micromorphology, mechanical performance and moisture uptake of injection-moulded WPCs have been studied. Composites based on unmodified and acetylated wood particles, specially designed with a length-to-width ratio of about 5-7, combined with both cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) and polypropylene (PP) matrices were studied. The size and shape of the wood particles were studied before and after the processing using light microscopy, and the micromorphology of the composites was studied using a newly developed surface preparation technique based on ultraviolet laser irradiation combined with low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (LV-SEM). The water vapour sorption in the composites and the effect of accelerated weathering were measured using thin samples which were allowed to reach equilibrium moisture content (EMC). The length-to-diameter ratio was only slightly decreased for the acetylated particles after compounding and injection moulding, although both the unmodified and the acetylated particles were smaller in size after the processing steps. The tensile strength was about 40% higher for the composite based on acetylated wood than for the composite with unmodified wood using either CAP or PP as matrix, whereas the notched impact strength of the composite based on acetylated wood was about 20% lower than those of the corresponding unmodified composites. The sorption experiments showed that the EMC was 50% lower in the composites with an acetylated wood component than in the composites with an unmodified wood component. The choice of matrix material strongly affected the moisture absorptivity of the WPC. The composites with CAP as matrix gained moisture more rapidly than the composites with PP as matrix. It was also found that accelerated ageing in a Weather-Ometer® significantly increased the moisture sensitivity of the PP-based composites.

    Today, wood-plastic composites (WPC) are mainly used in outdoor applications (e.g. as replacement for traditional preservative-treated wood). In such environments, moisture sorption combined with temperature induced movements of the polymer matrix may cause macroscopic dimensional changes and distortion (e.g. warping, cupping, and bowing of the composite boards as well as microscopic wood polymer interfacial cracks). Moisture uptake (diffusion/capillary penetration) in the composite also makes the wood component more susceptible for fungal growth and decay. Furthermore, the durability of the composite product may be further decreased by UV degradation effects. By using a modified wood component which is less hygroscopic, these problems could be minimized or entirely avoided. The objective of this work is to study the moisture sensitivity of WPCs made from modified wood and the effects of moisture sorption on the composites micromorphology, wood polymer interfacial behavior, and durability. The three modification methods used in this work are acetylation, furfurylation, and heat treatment. The technique used for studying the composite micromorphology was based on LV-SEM (low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy) combined with a specially designed specimen preparation technique by UV-laser ablation. Results show that wetting and drying of WPCs result in severe inner micro-cracks and interfacial debonding. These effects are, however, greatly reduced for WPCs made from the modified wood used in this study. In addition, the resistance to decay by fungi of such WPCs is significantly improved.

    Moderna datorbaserade beräkningsmetoder har använts sedan länge inom bl a fordonsindustrin som ett hjälpmedel vid produktframtagning. På senare år har sådana metoder, framför allt finita elementmetoden, FEM, också kommit att användas av andra branscher. Vid all virtuell produktframtagning uppkommer så småningom ett behov av verifiering av faktiska egenskaper som exempelvis hållfasthet och stabilitet via provning. Beroende på produktens komplexitet och provningsförhållanden i övrigt kan det ibland vara svårt, eller till och med omöjligt, att vid sådana mekaniska provningar genomföra deformationsmätning på traditionellt vis, med trådtöjningsgivare eller deformationsgivare. Denna Kontenta behandlar kortfattat en relativt ny teknik för mätning av deformationer vid provning, baserad på beröringsfri mätning med kamerateknik.

    Abstract [en]

    For timber floors in residential buildings the vibrations can be annoying. In order to have a better understanding of the expected level of vibrations, more studies are needed where human response to vibration is evaluated. In the present study five wooden floors have been built in a laboratory hall. Test persons evaluated the vibrations for two situations, first by own walking on the floor and thereafter by sitting on a chair while a second person walked. The floors deflection and input accelerans were measured. The results from the measurements are compared to the test person’s answers. This test indicates that the first eigenfrequency is a better indicator for vibration discomfort than the broadband input accelerance.

    In many sawmills, presorting of sawlogs is based on data from optical three-dimensional (3D) scanners. The use of X-ray log scanners is also becoming increasingly common and most sawmills installing an X-ray scanner already have a 3D scanner present. It is in this paper demonstrated how data from one and two-directional X-ray scanners can be combined with 3D scanner data using path length compensation. Examples show how the resulting images may be processed in order to predict quality parameters such as heartwood diameter and green heartwood density. Using the proposed method, it is possible to improve the accuracy of these important quality sorting parameters using existing equipment. This will improve the presorting at sawmills, thus reducing the production of off-grade products carrying unwanted combinations of dimension and grade.

    Wood density is an important quality variable, closely related to the mechanical properties of the wood. Precise wood density measurements in the log sorting would enable density sorting of logs for products such as strength-graded wood and finger-jointed wood. Density sorting of logs would also give more homogeneous drying properties and thus improve the quality of the final products. By compensating the radiographs from an X-ray log scanner for the varying path lengths using outer shape data from a three-dimensional (3D) scanner, it is possible to make precise estimates of both green and dry density. Measurements on simulated industrial data were compared with densities measured in computed tomographic (CT) images for 560 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) logs. It was found that green sapwood density could be measured with predictability R 2=0.65 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 25 kg m-3. Green and dry heartwood densities were measured with similar precision: R 2=0.79 and RMSE=32 kg m-3 for green density and R 2=0.83 and RMSE=32 kg m-3 for dry density.

    Abstract [en]

    The current study demonstrates that methacrylate and acrylate poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) functional oligomers can be effectively impregnated into wood blocks, and cured efficiently to high conversions without catalyst by e-beam radiation, allowing for less susceptibility to leaching, and favourable properties including higher Brinell hardness values. PEG based monomers were chosen because there is a long history of this water soluble monomer being able to penetrate the cell wall, thus bulking it and decreasing the uptake of water which further protects the wood from fungal attack. Diacrylate, dimethacrylate, and dihydroxyl functional PEG of Mw 550-575, of concentrations 0, 30, 60, and 100 wt% in water, were vacuum pressure impregnated into Scots Pine blocks of 15 x 25 x 50 mm in an effort to bulk the cell wall. The samples were then irradiated and compared with non-irradiated samples. It was shown by IR, DSC that the acrylate polymers were fully cured to much higher conversions than can be reached with conventional methods. Leaching studies indicated a much lower amount of oligomer loss from the cured vinyl functional PEG chains in comparison to hydroxyl functional PEG indicating a high degree of fastening of the polymer in the wood. The Brinell hardness indicated a significant increase in hardness to hardwood levels in the modified samples compared to the samples of hydroxyl functional PEG and un-cured vinyl PEG samples which actually became softer than the untreated Scots Pine. By monitoring the dimensions of the sample it was found by weight percent gain calculations (WPG %) that water helps to swell the wood structure and allow better access of the oligomers into the cell wall. Further, the cure shrinkage of the wood samples demonstrated infiltration of the oligomers into the cell wall as this was not observed for methyl methacrylate which is well documented to remain in the lumen. However, dimensional stability of the vinyl polymer modified blocks when placed in water was not observed to the same extent as PEG.
