    Abstract [en]

    Mode-stirred reverberation chambers (MSRCs) are a useful tool for measuring several wireless-related MIMO antenna parameters. In a conventional single-cavity MSRC, the emulated fading environment is isotropic and the amplitude of the signal is Rayleigh distributed. Previous contributions have enhanced the emulation capabilities of MSRCs so as to include the ability to emulate Rician- and non-isotropic fading environments. In this contribution, arbitrary amplitude probability density functions (PDF) emulation using a MSRC is presented by selecting parts of the sample set that forms different statistical ensembles. Several algorithms are presented and compared in terms of computation time and power accuracy using simulated as well as measured data from different MSRCs to obtain Rician, on-body and amplitude PDFs of standardized models. The technique is patent-protected by EMITE.

    Abstract [en]

    Antennas are one of the key components for efficient and reliable vehicular communications systems; especially for safety related applications the antenna performance is crucial. It is therefore important to be able to evaluate the antenna performance under realistic conditions so that the best antenna solution can be selected. In this paper we present a statistical method for evaluating the antenna performance by using the antennas radiation patterns and a multipath simulation tool. The multipath environment is generated by a number of incident waves with a specific angle of arrival distribution, defined by the user. In order to generate voltage samples at the antenna ports many sets of incident waves are generated. This simulates a changing environment as, e.g., when the vehicle is moving. By studying the cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for the voltage samples we are able to compare the performance for different antenna types, positions on the vehicle, etc. The method is fast and effective and, when applied to typical vehicular propagation environments, the importance of having antennas with radiation patterns capable of covering the whole azimuth plane is demonstrated.

    This paper investigates what challenges arise when extending the scope of functional safety for road vehicles to also include cooperative systems. Two generic alternatives are presented and compared with one another. The first alternative is to use a vehicle centric perspective as is the case in the traditional interpretation of ISO 26262 today. Here, an item (the top level system or systems for which functional safety is to be assured) is assumed to be confined to one vehicle. In the vehicle centric perspective inter-vehicle communication is not an architectural element and is therefore not a candidate for redundancy as part of the functional safety concept. The second alternative is to regard a cooperative system from a cooperative perspective. This implies that one item may span over several vehicles. The choice of perspective has implications in several ways. We investigate the implications for the cooperative item and in what ways the results may differ when going through the reference life cycle of ISO 26262. In particular we look at classification of hazardous events where severity is significantly higher since the cooperative system involves multiple rather than one single vehicle. We therefore suggest an additional severity class and as a consequence introduce a new automotive safety integrity level, ASIL E. The cooperative perspective includes the inter-vehicle communication as a candidate for redundancy. ASIL E can therefore be achieved using ASIL decomposition and the currently recommended product development phases for ASIL A to ASIL D. As an example for illustrating we use platooning.

    In this paper, we consider the problem of assessing when the control of a vehicle can be safely transferred from an automated driving system to the driver. We propose a method based on a description of the driver's capabilities to maneuver the vehicle, which is defined as a subset of the vehicle's state space and called the driver controllability set (DCS). Since drivers' capabilities vary among individuals, the DCS is updated online during manual driving. By identifying the limits of the individual driver's normal driving envelope, we find the estimated bounds of the DCS. Using a vehicle model and reachability analysis, we assess whether the states of the vehicle start and remain within the DCS during the transition to manual driving. Only if the states are within the DCS is the transition to manual driving classified as safe. We demonstrate the estimation of the DCS for four drivers based on the data collected with real vehicles in highway and city driving. Experiments on transitions to manual driving are also conducted with real vehicles. Results show that the proposed method can be implemented with a real system to classify transitions from automated to manual driving.

    This study explored how failures related to an adaptive cruise control (ACC) were handled by drivers and what the effects on safety can be. The experimental study included forty-eight subjects and was performed in a moving base driving simulator equipped with an ACC. Each subject experienced two different failures in separate scenarios. In total, the study included four different failures, i.e., Unwanted acceleration, Complete lack of deceleration, Partial lack of deceleration, and Speed limit violation. The outcome of each failure scenario has been categorized based on whether the driver managed to avoid a collision or not. For the outcomes where collisions were successfully avoided, the situations were analyzed in more detail and classified according to the strategy used by the driver. Besides showing that partial lack of deceleration caused more collisions than complete lack of deceleration (43% compared to 14% of the participants colliding), the results also indicate a preference among drivers to steer and change lane rather than to apply the brakes when faced with acceleration and deceleration failures. A trade off relationship was identified between allowing a failing ACC to stay operational and on the other hand disabling it when an error is detected. Keeping the system operational can cause confusion about the mode of the system but as the results of the study indicate it can also improve the situation by reducing impact speed.

    This paper presents a fault model for vehicle functions that includes communication devices for inter-vehicle cooperation. In particular, the fault model addresses vehicles where automation has partially replaced the driver, i.e., semi-automated cooperative vehicles. Components considered in the fault model include human drivers, communication systems, sensors, actuators, and control units. A description of faults in cooperative systems in general is complemented with an identification of errors in a platooning system. The identification has revealed systematic faults in software and human errors in the interaction between the system and the driver.

    Test and evaluation of wireless communication performance with cars can be done in many ways. One approach, for both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) tests, is to use a multipath propagation simulator to achieve realistic signal environments for the different communication systems under test. Multipath propagation simulators have previously been shown to be useful for testing mobile handsets. Specific issues related to tests with cars are the large size of the test object and the disturbances it can cause. In this paper we experimentally study how different design parameters of the multipath propagation simulator affect the received signals. The analysis of the setup as well as the data is performed using the so-called 'Design of Experiments' method.

    Ti2AlC coatings have been fabricated by cold-spray deposition. The microstructure evolution as a function of basic spray parameters temperature and pressure onto AA6060 aluminium alloy and 1.0037 steel substrates has been studied. Adherent and dense 50–80 μm thick Ti2AlC coatings were deposited on soft AA6060 substrates under gas temperature and pressure of 600 °C and 3.4 MPa, respectively, whilst comparable results were obtained on harder 1.0037 steel by using higher temperature (800 °C) and pressure (3.9 MPa).

    Abstract [en]

    MODIFI is a fault injection tool targeting software developed as Simulink models. In this paper, we describe three techniques for visualizing fault injection results obtained using the MODIFI tool. The first technique shows the progress of a fault injection campaign, and the outcome of individual experiments, using a 3D visualization of the fault injection campaign. The second technique, referred to as sensitivity profiling, identifies parts of a model that are sensitive for a specific fault model. The third technique shows how error propagates in a Simulink model. The sensitivity profiling and error propagation techniques are based on intuitive coloring of Simulink blocks. The three visualization techniques are demonstrated using a Brake-by-Wire system.

    Abstract [en]

    The performance of low-cost RTK(real-time kinematic)GPS receivers hasbeen compared to a state-of-the-art system as well to each other. Both static and dynamic performanceshavebeen compared. The dynamic performance has been evaluated using a vehicle with driving robot on the AstaZero proving ground.The assembly of the low-cost RTK GPS receivers is presented, and the test set-ups described. Besides having a lower data output frequency, two of the low-cost receivers have static and dynamic performance not far fromthat of the state-of-the-art system.

    Implementing AUTOSAR-based embedded systems that adhere to ISO 26262 is not trivial. High-level safety goals have to be refined to functional safety requirements and technical HW and SW safety requirements. SW safety requirements allocated to the application as well as the underlying AUTOSAR platform. Finding relevant safety requirements on the AUTOSAR basic software are a challenge. AUTOSAR specifications provide incomplete lists of requirements which might be relevant. In this paper we address this challenge by providing tool support to automatically extract relevant functional requirements for given safety scenarios. A conservative estimation gives that the safety-relevant part of the overall requirements can be as small as 30%, which reduce the necessary rigid testing effort. An electronic parking brake example is presented as a demonstration of concept.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vehicle automation and automation failures on driving performance. Previous studies have revealed problems with driving performance in situations with automation failures and attributed this to drivers being out-of-the-loop. It was therefore hypothesized that driving performance is safer with lower than with higher levels of automation. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that driving performance would be affected by the extent of the automation failure. A moving base driving simulator was used. The design contained semi-automated and highly automated driving combined with complete, severe, and moderate deceleration failures. In total the study involved 36 participants. The results indicate that driving performance degrades when the level of automation increases. Furthermore, it is indicated that car drivers are worse at handling complete than partial deceleration failures.
