    Abstract [en]

    The temperature characteristics of the birefringence of side-hole fibers filled with liquids or metal are investigated, aiming at providing a basis for on/off temperature sensing. Short pieces of fiber are filled and the change in birefringence is registered using measurements in reflective mode of the transmitted power through a linear polarizer at 1550 nm. The rapid change in the birefringence behavior of the fiber at the temperature of the phase transition of the filler substance is shown, and from the measurement data the phase transition temperatures can be determined as well as an estimation of the birefringence change with temperature. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations.

    Abstract [en]

    n this work we measure how photodarkening affects the optical efficiency for three different Yb/Al -doped silica fibers operating at 980€‰nm , one of which is codoped with cerium. A volume Bragg grating is used for linewidth control added rejection of amplified spontaneous emission. Several hours of degradation-resistant operation is obtained with the Ce-codoped fiber, while for the Yb/Al doped fibers a large drop in efficiency is observed within the first hour of operation. Our results show that Yb/Ce/Al -doped fibers could be excellent candidates for high-power 980€‰nm fiber laser sources._x000D_

The UWB radar system consists of two (Tx and Rx) antennas and one compact CMOS UWB transceiver. Several signal processing techniques are developed for the application. The system has been tested by real measurements. .

    Abstract [en]

    During the manufacturing of MEMS components, slanted beams can be produced in the etching process. We show that this can be used to produce skew motion that causes deflection of a proof mass out of the device plane also when the excitation is confined to the device plane. This allows construction of an energy harvester that uses a planar manufacturing process and produces power also with in-plane excitation. To obtain this with traditional methods it would be necessary to manufacture separate components and then mount them with their sensitive axes orthogonal to each other.

    Abstract [en]

    We have investigated the influence of sample size on the calibration of a vibrating sample magnetometer. As expected, when measurements and calibration are carried out on samples with the same shape the results agree within the experimental uncertainty. For two cylindrical samples of nickel, one with length and diameter 2.0 and 2.0 mm, and another with 5.3 and 1.0 mm respectively, the magnetometer signal varies with the length, in good agreement with numerical calculations.

    The magnetization of amorphous Fe1-xCx particles in decalin was measured in magnetic fields up to 12 T at temperatures between 10 and 250 K. For particles with a diameter of 3.2 nm, the zero field cooled magnetization has a maximum at 20 K. This is interpreted as a blocking of the superparamagnetic relaxation of single particles.

    Abstract [en]

    Technology trends such as Cloud, SDN, and NFV are transforming the telecommunications business, promising higher service flexibility and faster deployment times. They also allow for increased programmability of the infrastructure layers. We propose to split selected monitoring control functionality onto node-local control planes, thereby taking advantage of processing capabilities on programmable nodes. Our software defined monitoring approach provides telecom operators with a way to handle the trade off between high-granular monitoring information versus network and computation loads at central control and management layers. To illustrate the concept, a link rate monitoring function is implemented using node-local control plane components. Furthermore, we introduce a messaging bus for simple and flexible communication between monitoring function components as well as control and management systems. We investigate scalability gains with a numerical analysis, demonstrating that our approach would generate thousand fold less monitoring traffic while providing similar information granularity as a naive SNMP implementation or an Open Flow approach.

    Abstract [en]

    A thorough analysis of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and its impact on the coherent optical system is presented. We show with a time-domain analysis that EEPN is caused due to the interference of multiple delayed versions of the dispersed signal, generated by intermixing of the received dispersed signal, and the noise side bands of the local oscillator (LO) in the photodetectors. We derive statistical properties such as the mean, variance, and error vector magnitude of the received signal influenced with EEPN. We show that in coherent optical systems utilizing electronic dispersion compensation, this noise corresponds to multipath fading in wireless communication systems. Closed-form expressions of necessary LO linewidth and/or mitigation bandwidth for a general system configuration and specified OSNR penalty are given. The expressions for system design parameters, validated with system simulations, show that higher order modulation formats, such as 16-quadrature amplitude modulation and beyond, put stringent demands on the LO linewidth unless a mitigation technique is used.

    Abstract [en]

    We present an extensive study of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) in coherent optical system for all practical electronic dispersion compensation configurations. It is shown that there are only eight practicable all-electronic impairment mitigation configurations. The non-linear and time variant analysis reveals that the existence and the cause of EEPN depend on the digital signal processing (DSP) schemes. There are three schemes that in principle do not cause EEPN. Analysis further reveals the statistical equivalence of the remaining five system configurations resulting in EEPN. In three of them, EEPN is due to phase noise of the transmitting laser, while in the remaining two, EEPN is caused by the local oscillator. We provide a simple look-up table for the system designer to make an informative decision regarding practicable configuration choice and design.

    Abstract [en]

    A method for mitigating local oscillator (LO) phase noise-induced impairment, also known as equalization-enhanced phase noise, in coherent optical systems is discussed. The method is suitable for real-time implementation and requires hardware with a bandwidth much lower than the signal baud rate, even for a system utilizing conventional semiconductor laser as LO. We evaluate the required parameters like interpolation technique, electrical signal-to-noise ratio at digital coherence enhancement (DCE) front end, for long haul transmission links having quadrature phase shift keying and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation formats. We show that the method can be implemented using a low-speed DCE front end and a simple digital linear interpolator with small (<1 dB) implementation penalty even in cases that would otherwise result inerror floor.

    Abstract [en]

    A theoretical investigation of the equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and its mitigation is presented. We show with a frequency domain analysis that the EEPN results from the non-linear inter-mixing between the sidebands of the dispersed signal and the noise sidebands of the local oscillator. It is further shown and validated with system simulations that the transmission penalty is mainly due to the slow optical frequency fluctuations of the local oscillator. Hence, elimination of the frequency noise below a certain cut-off frequency significantly reduces the transmission penalty, even when frequency noise would otherwise cause an error floor. The required cut-off frequency increases linearly with the white frequency noise level and hence the linewidth of the local oscillator laser, but is virtually independent of the symbol rate and the accumulated dispersion.

    Abstract [en]

    Multi-scale methods that separate different time or spatial scales are among the most powerful techniques in physics, especially in applications that study nonlinear systems with noise. When the time scales (noise and perturbation) are of the same order, the scales separation becomes impossible. Thus, the multi-scale approach has to be modified to characterise a variety of noise-induced phenomena. Here, based on stochastic modelling and analytical study, we demonstrate in terms of the fluctuation-induced phenomena and Hurst R/S analysis metrics that the matching scales of random birefringence and pump–signal states of polarisation interaction in a fibre Raman amplifier results in a new random birefringence-mediated phenomenon, which is similar to stochastic anti-resonance. The observed phenomenon, apart from the fundamental interest, provides a base for advancing multi-scale methods with application to different coupled nonlinear systems ranging from lasers (multimode, mode-locked, random, etc.) to nanostructures (light-mediated conformation of molecules and chemical reactions, Brownian motors, etc.).

    Abstract [en]

    The epitaxial graphene-on-silicon carbide (SiC-G) has advantages of high quality and large area coverage owing to a natural interface between graphene and SiC substrate with dimension up to 100 mm. It enables cost effective and reliable solutions for bridging the graphene-based sensors/devices from lab to industrial applications and commercialization. In this work, the structural, optical and electrical properties of wafer-scale graphene grown on 2’’ 4H semi-insulating (SI) SiC utilizing sublimation process were systemically investigated with focus on evaluation of the graphene’s uniformity across the wafer. As proof of concept, two types of glucose sensors based on SiC-G/Nafion/Glucose-oxidase (GOx) and SiC-G/Nafion/Chitosan/GOx were fabricated and their electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. In addition, a few similar glucose sensors based on graphene by chemical synthesis using modified Hummer’s method were also fabricated for comparison.

    Peoples domestic habits are increasingly being targeted to reduce levels of CO2 emissions. Whereas domestic energy consumption has received a lot of attention with several reported studies on sustainable practices, there are very few studies on workplace practices. Nevertheless, these are considered as having much potential for reducing energy consumption. This paper presents the findings from two field studies where two different types of prototypes for visualizing energy use were designed, implemented evaluated in different types of workplace settings €“ factories offices. The studies used design probes to explore how visual feedback for electricity use was interpreted acted upon by employees in work settings. A striking observation was that it is very difficult to get people to change to more pro-environmental behavior practices in a workplace environment. The paper discusses why this might be the case._x000D_

    A novel vertical architecture for all-printed organic electrochemical transistors, based on poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate), realized on flexible substrates, is reported. The transistors are manufactured along both faces of plastic or paper substrates via connections are realized using laser ablation or simple punch through using a pin. Successful modulation of the electric current that flows between the two sides of the substrate is achieved using electrolyte-gating electrochemical modulation of the electronic charge transport of the bulk of the transistor channel. In addition to this, the transistors are exhibiting fast switching high ON/OFF current ratios._x000D_

    A flexible electrochromic active matrix addressed display, including 8 × 8 pixels, is demonstrated by using solution processing based on standard printing coating manufacturing techniques. Each organic electrochromic display (OECD) pixel its corresponding organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) are located on different sides of the flexible PET substrate. Electronic vias generated through the plastic substrate connects each OECD pixel with one addressing OECT. When comparing this display with actively addressed OECDs with all its components located on the same side, the present approach based on this electronic via substrate provides an enhanced pixel resolution a relatively more simplified manufacturing process._x000D_

    Low voltage operated electrochemical devices can be produced from electrically conducting polymers polyelectrolytes. Here, we report how such polymers polyelectrolytes can be cast together with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) derived from wood. The resulting films, which carry ionic or electronic functionalities, are all-organic, disposable, light-weight, flexible, self-adhesive, elastic self-supporting. The mechanical self-adhesive properties of the films enable simple flexible electronic systems by assembling the films into various kinds of components using a €œcut stick€ method. Additionally, the self-adhesive surfaces provide a new concept that not only allows for simplified system integration of printed electronic components, but also allows for a unique possibility to detach reconfigure one or several subcomponents by a €œpeel stick€ method to create yet another device configuration. This is demonstrated by a stack of two films that first served as the electrolyte layer the pixel electrode of an electrochromic display, which then was detached from each other transferred to another configuration, thus becoming the electrolyte gate electrode of an electrochemical transistor. Further, smart pixels, consisting of the combination of one electrochromic pixel one electrochemical transistor, have successfully been manufactured with the NFC-hybridized materials. The concept of system reconfiguration was further explored by that a pixel electrode charged to its colored state could be detached then integrated on top of a transistor channel. This resulted in spontaneous discharging associated current modulation of the transistor channel without applying any additional gate voltage. Our peel stick approach promises for novel reconfigurable electronic devices, e.g. in sensor, label security applications._x000D_

The differential amplifier based on OECTs can sense voltage difference and the voltage equalizer consisting of a microcontroller and OECTs can be used to charge supercapacitors to desired voltages.

    Data volumes in communication networks increase rapidly. Further, usage of social network applications is very wide spread among users, and among these applications, Facebook is the most popular. In this paper, we analyse user demands patterns and content popularity of Facebook generated traffic. The data comes from residential users in two metropolitan access networks in Sweden, and we analyse more than 17 million images downloaded by almost 16,000 Facebook users. We show that the distributions of image popularity and user activity may be described by Zipf distributions which is favourable for many types of caching. We also show that Facebook activity is more evenly spread over the day, compared to more defined peak hours of general Internet usage. Looking at content life time, we show that profile pictures have a relatively constant popularity while for other images there is an initial, short peak of demand, followed by a longer period of significantly lower and quite stable demand. These findings are useful for designing network and QoE optimisation solutions, such as predictive pre-fetching, proxy caching and delay tolerant networking. .
