    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents results from field measurements on a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system based on IEEE 802.11p. During the measurements the vehicles were moving and there were also moving obstacles located between the transmitting and receiving nodes creating a Non-Line-of-Sight environment. Distance, speed and type of obstacles were varied during the measurements. Both a highway and suburban environment was tested. The tests were focused on packet error rate and consecutive packet loss. The results of the measurements are compared with the communication requirements of a vehicle platooning application which is a novel intelligent transport system application. It implies multiple vehicles tightly following each other in a row. Performance of the application degrades with consecutive packet loss. It is shown that the platooning application is not adequately supported in all measurement scenarios.

    We present a method for repeatable measurements of antennas integrated on vehicles in vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The method can handle vehicles and heavy vehicles and results in distance dependent radiation pattern measurements, or near-field coverage measurements.     Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a method for the utilization of radio channels with two-ray propagation properties between vehicles in vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The method uses spatial diversity with antennas separated in the vertical direction to counteract low received levels in regions of destructive interference according to a two-ray path loss model. Results are exemplified with measurements and further analysed with simulations.

    Abstract [en]

    In this letter, over-the-air (OTA) tests of the performance of the IEEE 802.11p radio system are performed in a reverberation chamber (RC) that is equipped with a fast rotating mode stirrer. By varying the speed of the mode stirrer, different levels of Doppler spreads are created, and the 802.11p radio system is tested accordingly. As expected, the Doppler spread affects the package error rate (PER) of the radio system adversely. In addition to measurements, a simple PER model is presented, which sheds some light into the OTA tests.

    Abstract [en]

    Autonomous cars will in a near future drive around in cities and on highways. Antennas will then be needed to secure the wireless connection to these cars. To be able to test the antennas we have defined two edge environments: the Random Line-of-Sight (LOS) and the Rich Isotropic Multipath (RIMP). This paper shows a throughput performance comparison between measurements and simulations of a car-roof (shark-fin) antenna mounted on a ground plane in both of these environments. The comparison is done for both one and two bitstreams in a 2×2 MIMO system. The analysis is based on probability of detection (PoD) curves representing the throughput performance with digital threshold receivers.

    Autonomous (self-driving) cars will in a few years become a reality, driven by safety aspects. This will be made possible by reliable and secure wireless connections to the car via the wireless network, and directly from other vehicles in the close vicinity. Thereby OTA-testing becomes a big issue, both in multipath and Line-Of-Sight (LOS). The present paper proposes two compact and cost-effective test chambers that take account of the two limiting environments known as Rich Isotropic Multipath (RIMP) and Random-LOS. The randomness of the latter is associated with the unknown and arbitrarily distributed angle of arrival of the LOS in the horizontal plane, sometimes also having an unknown polarization, which thereby also become random.

    Li-ion batteries are the most popular type of batteries in electric, EV, and hybrid vehicles, HV. During their life time the batteries will be subjected to vibrations and therefore vibration testing is demanded by several standards. Testing on different size levels of the batteries, i.e. cell, module or pack, are proposed. Depending on the standard random vibration tests or tests with sinusoidal excitation are required. To compare these standards with the measurements, Fatigue Damage Spectrum, FDS, and Shock Response Spectrum, SRS, have been used. The FDS is a tool to analyze and compare different types of vibration tests and vibration measurements with respect to the fatigue damage that the vibration will cause on a mechanic structure. The SRS is used to estimate the risk for functional disturbances in electric equipment subjected to shock and vibrations. The comparison shows that the FDS and SRS for different vibration tests proposed for li-ion batteries vary strongly. Both levels and frequency ranges differ. One of the compared standards prescribes testing only in the vertical direction. The measurement done in this study was done during rather hard driving on a test track, this means high but not unrealistic measured acceleration responses. For one of the measured responses, the risk for fatigue during service could be higher than the risk at the tests. The low frequency content of a test can be important as the measurements show higher low frequency content than in many of the standardized tests. But even the high frequency content of the test must be considered as batteries normally are equipped with a large number of small electrical devices with high critical frequencies. Only one of the standards requires a separate test of such devices.

    RF power amplifier demonstrators containing each one GaN-on-SiC, HEMT, CHZ015AQEG, from UMS in SMD quad-flat no-leads package (QFN) were subjected to thermal cycles (TC) and power cycles (PC) followed by electrical, thermal and structural evaluation. Two types of solders i.e. Sn63Pb36Ag2 and lead-free SnAgCu (SAC305) and two types of TIM materials (NanoTIM and TgonTM 805) for PCB attachment to liquid cold plate were tested for thermomechanical reliability. Changes in electrical performance of the devices namely reduction of the current saturation value, threshold voltage shift, increase of the leakage current and degradation of the HF performance were observed as a result of an accumulated current stress during PC. No significant changes in the investigated solder or TIM materials were observed.

    Abstract [en]

    Commercial lithium-ion battery cells are exposed to a controlled propane fire in order to evaluate heat release rate (HRR), emission of toxic gases as well as cell temperature and voltage under this type of abuse. The study includes six abuse tests on cells having lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes and, as a comparison, one test on conventional laptop battery packs with cobalt based cathode. The influence of different state of charge (SOC) is investigated and a limited study of the effect of water mist application is also performed. The total heat release (THR) per battery energy capacity are determined to be 28-75 kJ Wh-1 and the maximum HRR values to 110-490 W Wh -1. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is found in the released gases for all tests but no traceable amounts of phosphorous oxyfluoride (POF3) or phosphorus pentafluoride (PF5) are detected. An extrapolation of expected HF emissions for a typical automotive 10 kWh battery pack exposed to fire gives a release of 400-1200 g HF. If released in a confined environment such emissions of HF may results in unacceptable exposure levels.

    Abstract [en]

    Lithium-ion batteries offer great energy and power densities but the thermal stability is an issue of concern compared to other battery technologies. In this study different types of abuse testing have been performed in order to compare the battery safety for different types of commercial lithium-ion battery cells. The results show large differences in abuse response for different cells. Exposed to external heating laptop cells with cobalt based cathode developed a thermal runaway resulting in pressure release, fire and temperatures over 700°C. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is known to be a very thermally stable cathode material and LFP-cells showed a significantly lower thermal response, a thermal runaway could, however, be detected for some of the cells in the external heating test. The overcharge tests of LFP-cells were in most cases uneventful but in one case the test resulted in a violent fire. The short circuit tests showed modest temperature increases of the cells in spite of high currents peaking at around 1000 A. Although the development of safer lithium-ion battery cells has been successful thermal runaway events may still occur under extreme conditions.

    Surface insulation resistance (SIR) measurements have become necessary to perform, especially due to the introduction of lead free solders. It has been reported that SIR and other test methods have to be used for evaluating the reliability of printed wiring boards. This paper presents an investigation on how the SIR test environment influences the test results. The factors varied were temperature and humidity. The temperature was varied between 40 and 85°C, and the relative humidity was varied between 60 and 85%. Furthermore, the influence of different types of process chemicals on SIR was evaluated. Seven lead free solder pastes, of which five were no-clean and two were water soluble, were compared. The influence of using conformal coating was also studied. These solder pastes were used to verify the developed method. A proper test method for SIR measurements is suggested in the paper, as well as a recommendation for use of conformal coating.

    This paper discusses how anodic pulses and periodic current reversion influence electrodeposition. Depending on the involved metal and electrolyte, very different effects can be observed and taken advantage of. The Wagner number, Wa, describing the current distribution is shown to be useful for predicting the throwing power at low frequencies of current reversion, even in complex electrochemical systems, but is less useful at higher frequencies. Passivation can occur due to oxide formation, super-saturation of metal salts or depletion of complexing agents at the electrode surface. Furthermore, dissolution and desorption processes in the anodic period can have strong influence on the succeeding cathodic electrocrystallisation affecting preferred crystal orientation, intrinsic stress and current efficiency. A literature survey is combined with experiments from silver plating from a cyanide bath.

    Achieving good isolation between two antennas in a wireless terminal is a challenge, especially if it is small compared to the wavelength. This communication presents a technique useful for two monopoles. It is based on placing the monopoles collinearly and tuning the ground plane size to approximately λ/4. Simulations and measurements are presented to illustrate the technique. Different methods of tuning the ground plane size in small terminals are discussed.
