Underwater monitoring system for body temperature and ECG recordings2017In: Underwater Technology, ISSN 1756-0543, Vol. 34, no 3, p. 135-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A new device was developed and tested in a series of diving experiments investigating the physiological effects of immersion on military divers for long periods (8 h to 12 h). During these experiments, the body temperature (core and skin) and electrocardiogram (ECG) of the divers were recorded and monitored in real time. The system developed for this purpose comprised a modified VitalSense temperature monitoring device from Philips Respironics and a one-channel ECG housed in a pressure-proof case. Recorded data were transmitted wirelessly to a PC. The recording and visualisation software was developed under National Instruments LabWindows.

Microstructural, mechanical and mass transport properties of isotropic and capillary alginate gels2014In: Soft Matter, ISSN 1744-683X, E-ISSN 1744-6848, Vol. 10, no 2, p. 357-366Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Macroscopically homogeneous and inhomogeneous calcium alginate gels are formed via internal or external addition of various amounts of calcium to an alginate solution. The externally formed gels contain parallel aligned capillary structures. The mechanical and mass transport properties and the microstructure of the differently set gels were characterized by rheological measurements, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM images show a zone of distorted anisotropic gel structure in the vicinity of the capillaries as well as indications of a lower degree of void connectivity. The diffusion rates of dextran at large distances from the capillaries were fast and capillary gels showed a plastic behaviour in comparison to the internally set gels. The results presented show large functional differences between the internally and externally set gels, which cannot be explained by the presence of capillaries alone.

Interactions and diffusion in fine-stranded beta-lactoglobulin gels determined via FRAP and binding2014In: Biophysical Journal, ISSN 0006-3495, E-ISSN 1542-0086, Vol. 106, no 1, p. 253-262Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The effects of electrostatic interactions and obstruction by the microstructure on probe diffusion were determined in positively charged hydrogels. Probe diffusion in fine-stranded gels and solutions of ?-lactoglobulin at pH 3.5 was determined using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and binding, which is widely used in biophysics. The microstructures of the ?-lactoglobulin gels were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. The effects of probe size and charge (negatively charged Na2-fluorescein (376Da) and weakly anionic 70kDa FITC-dextran), probe concentration (50 to 200 ppm), and ?-lactoglobulin concentration (9% to 12% w/w) on the diffusion properties and the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged probes and the positively charged gels or solutions were evaluated. The results show that the diffusion of negatively charged Na2-fluorescein is strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions in the positively charged ?-lactoglobulin systems. A linear relationship between the pseudo-on binding rate constant and the ?-lactoglobulin concentration for three different probe concentrations was found. This validates an important assumption of existing biophysical FRAP and binding models, namely that the pseudo-on binding rate constant equals the product of the molecular binding rate constant and the concentration of the free binding sites. Indicators were established to clarify whether FRAP data should be analyzed using a binding-diffusion model or an obstruction-diffusion model.

Interplay between flow and diffusion in capillary alginate hydrogels2016In: Soft Matter, ISSN 1744-683X, E-ISSN 1744-6848, Vol. 12, no 17, p. 3897-3907Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Alginate gels with naturally occurring macroscopic capillaries have been used as a model system to study the interplay between laminar flow and diffusion of nanometer-sized solutes in real time. Calcium alginate gels that contain homogeneously distributed parallel-aligned capillary structures were formed by external addition of crosslinking ions to an alginate sol. The effects of different flow rates (0, 1, 10, 50 and 100 μl min-1) and three different probes (fluorescein, 10 kDa and 500 kDa fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran) on the diffusion rates of the solutes across the capillary wall and in the bulk gel in between the capillaries were investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The flow in the capillaries was produced using a syringe pump that was connected to the capillaries via a tube. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an open aggregated structure close to the capillary wall, followed by an aligned network layer and the isotropic network of the bulk gel. The most pronounced effect was observed for the 1 nm-diameter fluorescein probe, for which an increase in flow rate increased the mobility of the probe in the gel. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching confirmed increased mobility close to the channel, with increasing flow rate. Mobility maps derived using raster image correlation spectroscopy showed that the layer with the lowest mobility corresponded to the anisotropic layer of ordered network chains. The combination of microscopy techniques used in the present study elucidates the flow and diffusion behaviors visually, qualitatively and quantitatively, and represents a promising tool for future studies of mass transport in non-equilibrium systems.

Correlating network structure with functional properties of capillary alginate gels for muscle fiber formation2017In: Food Hydrocolloids, ISSN 0268-005X, E-ISSN 1873-7137, Vol. 72, p. 210-218Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Capillary alginate gels have the potential to be used as scaffold for the growth of muscle cells for cultured meat owing to the formation of aligned skeletal muscle cells along the length of self-assembled micro-capillaries within the calcium alginate gel. The functional properties (mechanical and permeability) of the gels were determined and correlated to the nano-lengthscale of the gel network using small-angle X-ray scattering. Calcium ions were let to diffuse into the alginate solution in order to obtain spontaneously formed capillaries. We show that the resulting calcium alginate network is isotropic in the plane perpendicular to the inflow of cross linking ions while anisotropic in the parallel plane. The structural anisotropicity is reflected in the mechanical properties (measured via uniaxial stress relaxation) of the gel, where a larger force is required to compress the gel in the isotropic plane than in the anisotropic plane. The findings suggest that the network is layered, or composed of “sheets” with denser regions of alginate, sheets that are weakly attached to each other, similar to the structure of bacterial cellulose. Such structure would further explain the increased permeability of labeled dextran (as determined using fluorescence recovery after photo-bleaching) that we observed in the alginate gels used in this study, as compared to internally set calcium alginate gel.

Automatic Derivation of Platform Noninterference Properties2016In: Software Engineering and Formal Methods / [ed] Rocco De Nicola, Eva Kühn, 2016, 8, Vol. 9763, p. 27-44Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For the verification of system software, information flow properties of the instruction set architecture (ISA) are essential. They show how information propagates through the processor, including sometimes opaque control registers. Thus, they can be used to guarantee that user processes cannot infer the state of privileged system components, such as secure partitions. Formal ISA models - for example for the HOL4 theorem prover - have been available for a number of years. However, little work has been published on the formal analysis of these models. In this paper, we present a general framework for proving information flow properties of a number of ISAs automatically, for example for ARM. The analysis is represented in HOL4 using a direct semantical embedding of noninterference, and does not use an explicit type system, in order to (i) minimize the trusted computing base, and to (ii) support a large degree of context-sensitivity, which is needed for the analysis. The framework determines automatically which system components are accessible at a given privilege level, guaranteeing both soundness and accuracy.

Formal Verification of Secure User Mode Device Execution with DMA2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Separation between processes on top of an operating system or between guests in a virtualized environment is essential for establishing security on modern platforms. A key requirement of the underlying hardware is the ability to support multiple partitions executing on the shared hardware without undue interference. For modern processor architectures - with hardware support for memory management, several modes of operation and I/O interfaces - this is a delicate issue requiring deep analysis at both instruction set and processor implementation level. In a first attempt to rigorously answer this type of questions we introduced in previous work an information flow analysis of user program execution on an ARMv7 platform with hardware supported memory protection, but without I/O. The analysis was performed as a semi-automatic proof search procedure on top of an ARMv7 ISA model implemented in the Cambridge HOL4 theorem prover by Fox et al. The restricted platform functionality, however, makes the analysis of limited practical value. In this paper we add support for devices, including DMA, to the analysis. To this end, we propose an approach to device modeling based on the idea of executing devices nondeterministically in parallel with the (single-core) deterministic processor, covering a fine granularity of interactions between the model components. Based on this model and taking the ARMv7 ISA as an example, we provide HOL4 proofs of several noninterference-oriented isolation properties for a partition executing in the presence of devices which potentially use DMA or interrupts.

Securing DMA through Virtualization2012In: IEEE Conference on Complexity in Engineering, IEEE , 2012, 20, p. 118-123, article id 6242958Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We present a solution for preventing guests in a virtualized system from using direct memory access (DMA) to access memory regions of other guests. The principles we suggest, and that we also have implemented, are purely based on software and standard hardware. No additional virtualization hardware such as an I/O Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) is needed. Instead, the protection of the DMA controller is realized with means of a common ARM MMU only. Overhead occurs only in pre- and postprocessing of DMA transfers and is limited to a few microseconds. The solution was designed with focus on security and the abstract concept of the approach was formally verified.

Affordable Separation on Embedded Platforms: Soft Reboot Enabled Virtualization on a Dual Mode System2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While security has become important in embedded systems, commodity operating systems often fail in effectively separating processes, mainly due to a too large trusted computing base. System virtualization can establish isolation already with a small code base, but many existing embedded CPU architectures have very limited virtualization hardware support, so that the performance impact is often non-negligible. Targeting both security and performance, we investigate an approach in which a few minor hardware additions together with virtualization offer protected execution in embedded systems while still allowing non-virtualized execution when secure services are not needed. Benchmarks of a prototype implementation on an emulated ARM Cortex A8 platform confirm that switching between those two execution forms can be done efficiently.

    Abstract [en]

Utilization of abundant lignin-rich natural resources will provide new revenue streams for today’s kraft pulp mills. Owing to its phenol-rich structure, Lignin is very versatile and has much potential for application in many areas, for example: as a foundation for bulk chemical production, for conversion to fuel products, a binder material, a fertilizer, anti-oxidant, as a precursor for carbon fibres and nanofibres and for activated carbons.

Preservation potential of keratin in deep time2018In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 13, no 11Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multiple fossil discoveries and taphonomic experiments have established the durability of keratin. The utility and specificity of antibodies to identify keratin peptides has also been established, both in extant feathers under varying treatment conditions, and in feathers from extinct organisms. Here, we show localization of feather-keratin antibodies to control and heat-treated feathers, testifying to the repeatability of initial data supporting the preservation potential of keratin. We then show new data at higher resolution that demonstrates the specific response of these antibodies to the feather matrix, we support the presence of protein in heat-treated feathers using ToF-SIMS, and we apply these methods to a fossil feather preserved in the unusual environment of sinter hot springs. We stress the importance of employing realistic conditions such as sediment burial when designing experiments intended as proxies for taphonomic processes occurring in the fossil record. Our data support the hypothesis that keratin, particularly the β-keratin that comprises feathers, has potential to preserve in fossil remains.

On the Computation of Fixpoints in Static Program Analysis with an Application to AKL1995Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report features an introduction to lattice- and fixpoint theory and a survey of methods and recent results for fixpoint computations in static program analysis. As the number of equations in static program analysis tend to be very large, it is extremely important to avoid unnecessary computations and hence to find an optimal order in which to compute the functions. It is also important to have an efficient method for detecting stability. An algorithm satisfying these two requirements is Bourdoncle's algorithm for finding a weak topological ordering of a directed graph which may contain cycles. This algorithm is a generalization of Tarjan's algorithm for finding the strongly connected components of a directed graph. This report presents results from experiments with a fixpoint solver in the analysis framework for AKL (Agents Kernel Language, a concurrent constraint language developed at SICS) using the above ideas showing that a considerable speed-up (up to 3000%) can be achieved compared to that of a fixpoint solver based on strongly connected components. This is explained by showing how weak topological orders computed by Bourdoncle's algorithm incorporate many intuitively good heuristics. The report also introduces partially argument independent functions, a class of functions particularly suited to the repetitive scheme of computations that arise in fixpoint computations. A function of this type needs to be re-evaluated only with respect to those of its arguments which have changed since its latest evaluation.

    Abstract [en]

This paper reports successful temperature measurements from a real time production process using surface integrated sensors. K-type thermocouples were fabricated directly on the surface of a tool part using Direct Write Thermal Spray and the process temperature cycle from an injection moulding process was measured under real running conditions. The metal-polymer interface never got hotter than 100 °C as the >200 °C molten polymer is instantly solidified as it reaches the cold metal surface.

Fabrication of a SiC double gate vertical channel jfet and it's application in power electronics2012In: ECS Transactions, 2012, Vol. 50, no 3, p. 45-52Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fabrication process of an innovative epitaxial trench JFET with vertical channel and double gate control is reviewed. Due to the excellent doping and thickness control of the epitaxial regrowth techniques, the sub-micron channel can be tailored for normally-on and -off operation. Due to the vertical channel design the epitaxial trench JFETs have narrow cell pitch for high-density power integration and high saturation current capabilities. The excellent performance of these fabricated and packaged JFET devices is demonstrated with on-wafer measurements and power switching tests. High current conduction tests are performed at room temperature and elevated temperatures of 125°C with switching frequencies of 30 kHz and 200 kHz.

Progress in buried grid technology for improvements in on-resistance of high voltage SiC devices2016In: ECS Transactions, 2016, Vol. 75, no 12, p. 183-190Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Buried grid technology is suggested to protect field sensitive device areas from high electric field in order to improve the high temperature and high voltage performance of SiC devices. More than three orders of magnitude lower leakage currents have been demonstrated at high temperature operation. The drawback is that the total resistance increases due to the introduction of the buried grid leading to higher voltage drop at rated current and higher conduction losses. In this paper, we discuss doping and barrier engineering methods in order to take full advantage of the superior shielding effect of the buried grid technology and at the same time minimize the effect on the current conduction. As example, the design considerations for a 1200 V SiC buried grid JBS diode in terms of epi structure doping as well as buried grid properties is comprehensively investigated to optimize the on-state condition.

Thermoreversible polymers adsorbed to colloidal silica: A 1H NMR and DSC study of the phase transition in confined geometry2002In: Journal of Physical Chemistry B, ISSN 1520-6106, E-ISSN 1520-5207, Vol. 106, p. 7800-7808Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The phase transition of the thermoreversible polymer PNIPAM, which shows a coil-to-globule transition due to the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in aqueous solution, is investigated in the restricted geometry of an adsorption layer. Furthermore, a charged copolymer is studied to investigate the influence of charges on the phase transition. Both polymers are adsorbed to colloidal silica and studied by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) experiments. In solid state 1H NMR relaxation experiments the signals of solid spins in trains and of liquid spins in tails and loops can be identified. 1H liquid state spectra detect the phase transition of the loops and tails into immobile segments with increasing temperature. The transition is broadened as compared to the polymer in solution, especially at low surface coverage. For the copolymer, the transition is incomplete, since mobile segments remain even at high temperature. They are attributed to electrostatic repulsion from the surface, leading to a mobile arrangement of the copolymer layer. Micro-DSC experiments confirm the finding of an increased width of the transition at the interface, which depends on the surface coverage. Furthermore, an increase of the transition temperature with decreasing polymer amount is observed, which is most pronounced for the copolymer, and is a further indication of an electrostatically hindered phase transition. In conclusion, despite a negligible influence of a low fraction of charges on the phase transition in solution, the phase transition in adsorption layers is very sensitive to charged segments. Combining NMR and DSC methods, local information on the transition behavior of different polymer segments at the interface, such as loops and tails, or charged monomers, can be obtained.

A large number of different NMR methods are of great usefulness in the investigation of molecular mobility in organic bulk systems, while studies at interfaces are rare owing to the low intrinsic sensitivity of NMR methods. This article presents two examples of the application of spin resonance in investigations of polymers at interfaces, employing polymer-coated colloids: Applying 1H liquid-state NMR to monitor segmental mobility, the phase transition of the thermoreversible polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) is investigated in the restricted geometry of an adsorption layer, and furthermore under the influence of charges in a statistical copolymer. The phase transition is substantially broader than in solution and for the charged copolymer, mobile segments remain even above the transition temperature. This is attributed to a comparatively mobile arrangement of the copolymer layer. Owing to the electrostatic repulsion from the surface, the copolymer layer is confined to a configuration with charged loops extending further from the interface. The second example concerns polyelectrolyte multilayers formed by self-assembly of polyanions and polycations onto colloidal particles. The hydration of the layer system is studied using 1H spin-relaxation rates, R2, of water, which are a measure for the immobilisation of water molecules in the multilayers. A linear increase in R2 with the number of layers is found for [poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfate)/poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride)]N, reflecting a constant increase in the amount of hydration water with the adsorption of each layer. For [poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride)]N, involving a weak polyelectrolyte, the data show reversible swelling behaviour with respect to the electric potential of the outer layer: A positive surface charge leads to a swelling of the multilayers, while owing to a negative surface charge deswelling occurs

Hard and Transparent Films Formed by Nanocellulose-TiO2 Nanoparticle Hybrids2012In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 7, no 10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The formation of hybrids of nanofibrillated cellulose and titania nanoparticles in aqueous media has been studied. Their transparency and mechanical behavior have been assessed by spectrophotometry and nanoindentation. The results show that limiting the titania nanoparticle concentration below 16 vol% yields homogeneous hybrids with a very high Young’s modulus and hardness, of up to 44 GPa and 3.4 GPa, respectively, and an optical transmittance above 80%. Electron microscopy shows that higher nanoparticle contents result in agglomeration and an inhomogeneous hybrid nanostructure with a concomitant reduction of hardness and optical transmittance. Infrared spectroscopy suggests that the nanostructure of the hybrids is controlled by electrostatic adsorption of the titania nanoparticles on the negatively charged nanocellulose surfaces.

    Abstract [en]

The Internet Protocol (IP) has been proven very flexible, being able to accommodate all kinds of link technologies and supporting a broad range of applications. The basic principles of the original Internet architecture include end-to-end addressing, global routeability and a single namespace of IP addresses that unintentionally serves both as locators and host identifiers. The commercial success and widespread use of the Internet have lead to new requirements, which include Internetworking over business boundaries, mobility and multi-homing in an untrusted environment. Our approach to satisfy these new requirements is to introduce a new Internetworking layer, the node identity layer. Such a layer runs on top of the different versions of IP, but could also run directly on top of other kinds of network technologies, such as MPLS and 2G/3G PDP contexts. This approach enables connectivity across different communication technologies, supports mobility, multi-homing, and security from ground up. This paper describes the Node Identity Architecture in detail and discusses the experiences from implementing and running a prototype.

Circumventing seizure activity in a series of G protein coupled receptor 119 (GPR119) agonists2014In: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, ISSN 0022-2623, E-ISSN 1520-4804, Vol. 57, no 21, p. 8984-8998Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Agonism of GPR119 is viewed as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of type II diabetes and other elements of metabolic syndrome. During progression of a previously disclosed candidate 1 through mice toxicity studies, we observed tonic-clonic convulsions in several mice at high doses. An in vitro hippocampal brain slice assay was used to assess the seizure liability of subsequent compounds, leading to the identification of an aryl sulfone as a replacement for the 3-cyano pyridyl group. Subsequent optimization to improve the overall profile, specifically with regard to hERG activity, led to alkyl sulfone 16. This compound did not cause tonic-clonic convulsions in mice, had a good pharmacokinetic profile, and displayed in vivo efficacy in murine models. Importantly, it was shown to be effective in wild-type (WT) but not GPR119 knockout (KO) animals, consistent with the pharmacology observed being due to agonism of GPR119.

Automated Performance Testing Based on Active Deep Learning2021In: 2021 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automation of Software Test (AST), 2021, p. 11-19Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Generating tests that can reveal performance issues in large and complex software systems within a reasonable amount of time is a challenging task. On one hand, there are numerous combinations of input data values to explore. On the other hand, we have a limited test budget to execute tests. What makes this task even more difficult is the lack of access to source code and the internal details of these systems. In this paper, we present an automated test generation method called ACTA for black-box performance testing. ACTA is based on active learning, which means that it does not require a large set of historical test data to learn about the performance characteristics of the system under test. Instead, it dynamically chooses the tests to execute using uncertainty sampling. ACTA relies on a conditional variant of generative adversarial networks, and facilitates specifying performance requirements in terms of conditions and generating tests that address those conditions. We have evaluated ACTA on a benchmark web application, and the experimental results indicate that this method is comparable with random testing, and two other machine learning methods, i.e. PerfXRL and DN.

DELFASE: A Deep Learning Method for Fault Space Exploration2022In: 18th European dependable computing conference (EDCC 2022), 2022Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are increasingly used in various safety-critical domains; assuring the safety of these systems is of paramount importance. Fault Injection is known as an effective testing method for analyzing the safety of CPSs. However, the total number of faults to be injected in a CPS to explore the entire fault space is normally large and the limited budget for testing forces testers to limit the number of faults injected by e.g., random sampling of the space. In this paper, we propose DELFASE as an automated solution for fault space exploration that relies on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for optimizing the identification of critical faults, and can run in two modes: active and passive. In the active mode, an active learning technique called ranked batch-mode sampling is used to select faults for training the GAN model with, while in the passive mode those faults are selected randomly. The results of our experiments on an adaptive cruise control system show that compared to random sampling, DELFASE is significantly more effective in revealing system weaknesses. In fact, we observed that compared to random sampling that resulted in a fault coverage of around 10%, when using the active and passive modes, the fault coverage of DELFASE could be as high as 89% and 81%, respectively.

Full-reference video quality metric assisted development of no-reference video quality metrics for real time network monitoring2014In: EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, ISSN 1687-5176, E-ISSN 1687-5281, no 4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

High-quality video is being increasingly delivered over Internet Protocol networks, which means that network operators and service providers need methods to measure the quality of experience (QoE) of the video services. In this paper, we propose a method to speed up the development of no-reference bitstream objective metrics for estimating QoE. This method uses full-reference objective metrics, which makes the process significantly faster and more convenient than using subjective tests. In this process, we have evaluated six publicly available full-reference objective metrics in three different databases, the EPFL-PoliMI database, the HDTV database, and the Live Video Wireless database, all containing transmission distortions in H.264 coded video. The objective metrics could be used to speed up the development process of no-reference real-time video QoE monitoring methods that are receiving great interest from the research community. We show statistically that the full-reference metric Video Quality Metric (VQM) performs best considering all the databases. In the EPFL-PoliMI database, SPATIAL MOVIE performed best and TEMPORAL MOVIE performed worst. When transmission distortions are evaluated, using the compressed video as the reference provides greater accuracy than using the uncompressed original video as the reference, at least for the studied metrics. Further, we use VQM to train a lightweight no-reference bitstream model, which uses the packet loss rate and the interval between instantaneous decoder refresh frames, both easily accessible in a video quality monitoring system.

Application of full-reference video quality metrics in IPTV2017In: IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting, BMSB, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Executing an accurate full-reference metric such as VQM can take minutes in an average computer for just one user. Therefore, it can be unfeasible to analyze all the videos received by users in an IPTV network for example consisting of 10.000 users using a single computer running the VQM metric. One solution can be to use a lightweight no-reference metrics in addition to the full-reference metric mentioned. Lightweight no-reference metrics can be used for discarding potential situations to evaluate because they are accurate enough for that task, and then the full-reference metric VQM can be used when more accuracy is needed. The work in this paper is focused on determining the maximum number of situations/users that can be analyzed simultaneously using the VQM metric in a computer with good performance. The full-reference metric is applied on the transmitter using a method specified in the recommendation ITU BT.1789. The best performance achieved was 112.8 seconds per process.

Cellulose and its derivatives: towards biomedical applications2021In: Cellulose, ISSN 0969-0239, E-ISSN 1572-882X, Vol. 28, p. 1893-1931Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cellulose is the most abundant polysaccharide on Earth. It can be obtained from a vast number of sources, e.g. cell walls of wood and plants, some species of bacteria, and algae, as well as tunicates, which are the only known cellulose-containing animals. This inherent abundance naturally paves the way for discovering new applications for this versatile material. This review provides an extensive survey on cellulose and its derivatives, their structural and biochemical properties, with an overview of applications in tissue engineering, wound dressing, and drug delivery systems. Based on the available means of selecting the physical features, dimensions, and shapes, cellulose exists in the morphological forms of fiber, microfibril/nanofibril, and micro/nanocrystalline cellulose. These different cellulosic particle types arise due to the inherent diversity among the source of organic materials or due to the specific conditions of biosynthesis and processing that determine the consequent geometry and dimension of cellulosic particles. These different cellulosic particles, as building blocks, produce materials of different microstructures and properties, which are needed for numerous biomedical applications. Despite having great potential for applications in various fields, the extensive use of cellulose has been mainly limited to industrial use, with less early interest towards the biomedical field. Therefore, this review highlights recent developments in the preparation methods of cellulose and its derivatives that create novel properties benefiting appropriate biomedical applications. © 2021, The Author(s).

    Abstract [sv]

Denna vägbro togs i trafik under 2010. Vägbron togs i trafik i våren 2010.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Corrosion properties of stainless steels as reinforcement in concrete in swedish outdoor environment2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Stainless steels are finding increasing use as reinforcement in repair work with original carbon steel reinforcement as well as new construction in aggressive environments. This work examines the corrosion properties of austenitic stainless steels 304L, 316L and duplex stainless steels, S32101, S32205. Cast-in stainless rebars were tested alone and coupled to carbon steel rebars to investigate the influence on the corrosion rates of the carbon steel. Chlorides were added to the concrete in amounts ranging from 0.3 % to 3 % by mass of cement. The macro-cell current between stainless steels and carbon steel showed a galvanic effect at the beginning of the exposure but this declined to very low values after some time. No corrosion was detected on any of the stainless steel rebars in contact with the concrete after two years exposure outdoor. Moreover, the coupling of the carbon steel to a stainless steel was seen to only have a minor effect on the corrosion rate of the carbon steel, indicating that the stainless steel acted as a weak cathode in this environment. © 2009 by NACE International.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Rostfria ståls korrosionsegenskaper i kloridhaltig betong – Ett års exponering i havsvatten: Delrapport III2011Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Cathodic protection of concrete structures with thermally sprayed sacrificial zinc anodes - Critical parameters for the protective ability of the sprayed-on anode2012In: Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting III - Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting, ICCRRR 2012, 2012, p. 978-984Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an ongoing project regarding Cathodic protection of concrete structures with thermally sprayed sacrificial zinc anodes. The project is divided into two parts: Stage 1 shows the results from a survey of literature and practical experiences of the use of cathodic protection of concrete structures with sprayed zinc sacrificial anodes. Results from investigations of thermally zinc sprayed concrete structures such as concrete walls in the water intake building on a nuclear plant and on the edge beam of the Öland Bridge are presented in the paper. Stage 2 in the project is focused on the critical parameters for the protective ability of the sprayed-on anode. A laboratory setup and a field object are presented as well as the methods used to evaluate the sprayed-on anode. The present investigations show that the resistivity of the concrete has a great influence on the protective ability of the sprayed-on anode. Further, the life length of the zinc anode depends on the external environmental conditions at the anode. In conclusion it can be stated that the prospect of using cathodic protection with thermally sprayed zinc sacrificial anodes is promising but in order to optimize the use, threshold values need to be determined regarding for example the humidity, carbonation depth and the chloride content of the concrete.

Ny provningsmetodik för bestämning av bindemedlets korrosionsskyddande förmåga i betong2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Low temperature investigations of carbonitrides, chromium carbides and cementite2012Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This work concerns experimental investigations of thermodynamic equilibria at low temperature. Motivated by alloy development of microalloyed steels and tool steels, areas of improvement are identified, model materials are produced and thermodynamic phase equilibria are established by long time heat treatments. The resulting microstructures are characterized by phase composition measurements and identification of phases. Focus is on Nb/V carbonitrides and Nb/Ti carbonitrides typically present in microalloyed steels and on Cr-rich carbides typically present in high alloyed tool steels. An investigation of the composition of low temperature cementite is also included. All experimental results are compared to thermodynamic calculations using the present thermodynamic descriptions available. It is concluded that the description of the Fe-Nb-V-C-N system needs further development and that the new experimental information produced within this work (e.g. figure below) will be valuable for this purpose. The calculations for the Cr-rich carbides were in agreement with the experimental findings and do not identify any shortcomings of the available description. However, additional experimental information is needed in order to assure the description of the relative stability for the different Cr-carbides. Further, it is confirmed that the calculated cementite composition is in agreement with the measured composition; i.e. the present description for cementite holds for extrapolation to lower temperatures.

    Abstract [sv]

Core-shell structured CaO-based pellets protected by mesoporous ceramics shells for high-temperature CO2 capture2016In: Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, ISSN 0008-4034, E-ISSN 1939-019X, Vol. 94, no 11, p. 2038-2044Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, a series of core-shell structured spheriform CO2 sorbents were synthesized by using CaO-based pellets as cores and different mesoporous metal oxides (e.g. alumina, ceria, and yttrium-stabilized zirconia) as shells through a repeated wet impregnation coating process. Cyclic CO2 capture performance of the obtained sorbents was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Among all the core/shell sorbents under study, the pellets coated with a layer of alumina exhibit the best performance in the retention of CO2 uptake over 20 cycles with the lowest activity loss of only 30.4 %, attributed to the existence of the thermal stable porous alumina shell which prevents the sintering and the aggregation of the CaO grains. Moreover, the attrition study using an air-jet apparatus and a standard test method reveals that such sorbents exhibit enhanced attrition resistance due to the protection of the porous shell providing them with a great potential for application in fluidized bed conditions.

Wettability and liquid sorption of wood investigated by Wilhelmy plate method2014In: Wood Science and Technology, ISSN 0043-7719, E-ISSN 1432-5225, Vol. 48, no 1, p. 161-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The wettability of Scots pine veneers was investigated with different approaches using the Wilhelmy plate method. The probe liquids were water and octane, which differ; in that, water is able to swell the wood sample, whereas octane does not. Novel approaches based on the Wilhelmy plate method to study wettability, liquid penetration, and swelling behavior of wood veneers are introduced. First, immersion to constant depth was performed, and liquid uptake with time was evaluated. Different kinetic regimes, the fastest one associated with contact angle changes and the slowest regime associated with liquid sorption by capillary and diffusion, were observed. Two other approaches, imbibition at constant depth (with initial deeper immersion) and full immersion, were utilized in order to keep the contact angle constant during measurements. Dynamic wettability studies were done by a multi-cycle (10-20 cycles) Wilhelmy method. Based on this, the time-dependent swelling of wood and changes in sample perimeter could be obtained. Generally, water showed higher absorption than octane. In all wettability studies, and for both probe liquids, the penetration process starts with a fast initial sorption, which is followed by swelling in the case of water.
