    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this work was to evaluate systems making organic farms self-sufficient in farm-produced bio-based fuels. The energy balance and environmental load for systems based on rape methyl ester (RME), ethanol and biogas were evaluated using a life cycle perspective. Complete LCAs were not performed. Important constraints when implementing the systems in practice were also identified. The RME scenario showed favourable energy balance and produced valuable by-products but was less positive in some other aspects. The use of land was high and thereby also the emissions associated with cultivation. Emissions, with the exception of CO2, during utilisation of the fuel were high compared to those of the other fuels in the study. The technology for production and use of RME is well known and easy to implement at farm scale. The production of ethanol was energy consuming and the by-products were relatively low value. However, the area needed for cultivation of raw material was low compared to the RME scenario. The production and utilisation of ignition improver and denaturants were associated with considerable emissions. Suitable ethanol production technology is available but is more optimal for large scale systems. The biogas scenario had a low relative need for arable land, which also resulted in smaller soil emissions to air and water. Another advantage was the potential to recycle plant nutrients. On the other hand, the potential emissions of methane from storage of digestate, upgrading of biogas and methane losses during utilisation of fuel produced a negative impact, mainly on global warming. Small scale technology for biogas cleaning and storage is not fully developed and extensive tractor modifications are necessary. The global warming effects of all three systems studied were reduced by 58-72% in comparison to a similar farming system based on diesel fuel. However, the fuel costs were higher for all scenarios studied compared to current diesel prices. In particular, the large costs for seasonal storage of gas meant that the biogas scenario described is currently not financially viable. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Biobeds are an effective system for minimising the risk of point-source contamination by pesticides. The original biobed system comprises a clay layer at the bottom, a biomixture layer and a grass layer on top. The composition of the biomixture, which in the original Swedish model consisted of soil: peat: wheat straw (1:1:2 by volume), determines the efficiency of the system. Since the use of peat is not environmentally or economically feasible in China, this study tested the potential of replacing it with a locally available material, spent mushroom substrate (SMS). Three biomixtures containing different SMS (Pleurotus eryngii, Flammulina velutipes and Lentinus edodes) were compared with a biomixture containing peat, as in the original Swedish design, and a control containing soil alone. The fungicide chlorothalonil and the insecticide imidacloprid were used as model pesticides in the tests. Microbial activity (measured as respiration and phenoloxidase and hydrolytic activity) and pesticide dissipation were studied. Microbial activity was higher in the three biomixtures containing SMS than in the original-type biomixture. Among the SMS biomixtures, that containing SMS from L.edodes was the most biologically active. However, pesticide dissipation was comparable in all four biomixtures and significant differences were only found between biomixtures and the soil-alone control. Based on the physicochemical characteristics, biological activity and preliminary results on pesticide degradation, SMS are suitable and can therefore be used as a substitutes for peat.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a pilot study that purposed to investigate grain dusty exposure related to the health hazard of farmers during grain handling . The concentrations of airborne grain dust exposed were measured by a personal particulate monitor with five farmers operating various tasks of grain handling at different farms. Endotoxins and microorganisms contained in the dust were analyzed from the personal sampling in the breathing zone. The results show that the farmers were exposed to higher concentrations of the airborne grain dusts when they were cleaning the harvester, shoving or sweeping grains for the unloading. Also, all the contents of endotoxins exceeded an exposure risk limit for inflammation of respiratory tract. In order to reduce the health risk in grain handling, some protective approaches are recommended. © 2008 IEEE.

    The effects of an ionization-based air purification system on air quality in pig houses was evaluated and quantified. The aim was to determine whether using such a system in pig pens could remove airborne pollutants and improve the working environment, thereby decreasing the health risks to farmers. The evaluation comprised a field pilot study of air quality in a conventional pig house in Sweden. The ionization equipment used was an AircodeTM CX-200 and eight units were installed in the pig house. The measurements of air quality included real-time concentration of airborne dust particles, endotoxins and microorganisms, as well as gases (ammonia & carbon dioxide). The results showed little difference in the concentration of dust particles or gases after air purification. The dust concentrations in the air were lower than the Occupational Exposure Limit Value for all measurements. However, the concentration of endotoxins measured exceeded a risk level (exposure limit value for inflammation of respiratory tract). Microbiological analysis indicated that the airborne dust contained some bacteria and mould fungi. The ionization system was shown to reduce the concentrations of airborne endotoxins and microorganisms in the pig house over the five-day study period. © 2011 IEEE.

    Objectives: At the request of the European Commission and in the framework of the European Machinery Directive, research was performed in five different laboratories to develop specifications for surface temperature limit values for the short-term accidental touching of the fingertip with cold surfaces. Methods: Data were collected in four laboratories with a total of 20 males and 20 females performing a grand total of 1655 exposures. Each touched polished blocks of aluminium, stainless steel, nylon-6 and wood using the distal phalanx of the index finger with a contact force of 1.0, 2.9 and 9.8 N, at surface temperatures from +2 to -40°C for a maximum duration of 120 s. Conditions were selected in order to elicit varying rates of skin cooling upon contact. Contact temperature (TC) of the fingertip was measured over time using a T-type thermocouple. Results: A database obtained from the experiments was collated and analysed to characterize fingertip contact cooling across a range of materials and surface temperatures. The database was subsequently used to develop a predictive model to describe the contact duration required for skin contact temperature to reach the physiological criteria of onset of pain (15°C), onset of numbness (7°C) and onset of frostbite risk (0°C). Conclusions: The data reflect the strong link between the risk of skin damage and the thermal properties of the material touched. For aluminium and steel, skin temperatures of 0°C occurs within 2-6 s at surface temperatures of -15°C. For non-metallic surfaces, onset of numbness occurs within 15-65 s of contact at -35°C and onset of cold pain occurs within 5 s of contact at -20°C. The predictive model subsequently developed was a non-linear exponential expression also reflecting the effects of material thermal properties and initial temperature. This model provides information for the protection of workers against the risk of cold injury by establishing the temperature limits of cold touchable surfaces for a broad range of materials, and it is now proposed as guidance values in a new international standard. © The Author 2006.     Manual work is often required under various cold conditions, which reduce finger temperature and carry a risk of finger cold injury while touching very cold metallic surfaces. This paper describes the development of an electrically heated, artificial finger that can simulate the cooling behaviour of the human finger. To obtain complementary data on safety criterion for extreme conditions, it was utilized to measure contact temperature when extremely cold metals were touched. The measurements were carried out in two climatic chambers at various temperatures (-40, -30, -20 and -10°C) on different cold metallic surfaces (aluminium and steel). Experimental results confirmed that the instrument is capable of simulating the cooling behaviour of human fingers touching the cold metals. The results with the artificial finger indicate that a cold injury may take place if a human finger touches cold aluminium at <-20°C for less than 5 s. In addition, the artificial finger model provides useful data to determine contact duration when touching extremely cold metallic surfaces for protecting against cold injury. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.     Abstract [en]

    In consequence of working in cold environments, agricultural workers may be exposed to higher risk of cold-related injuries, compared with the general population. These injuries can include tissue damage due to the exposure to subfreezing temperatures, more generalized symptoms caused by hypothermia, and secondary injuries caused by impaired performance. Risk of cold injury is increased for older workers and for those with disabling health conditions, both of which occur in above-average numbers in agriculture. Based on a selective review of the literature and case studies assembled by Purdue's Breaking New Ground Resource Center, an overview is presented of the mechanisms and symptoms of cold injuries, together with practical suggestions to help reduce risks of cold injuries for workers in agricultural settings. Special attention is given to potential risks to individuals with physical disabilities. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    This study investigated how well organic growing-fattening pig systems provided a safe and healthy working environment and identified areas where improvements are needed. The study formed part of a larger project aimed at identifying strategies for creating a good animal and working environment and resource-efficient nutrient management in outdoor pig systems. Field studies were carried out at six Swedish farms in two types of outdoor pig systems (mobile and stationary). A method known as WEST (Work Environment Screening Tool) and a modified version of WEST, called WEST-agriculture (WEST-AG), were utilized for screening. Together, the two methods covered six factors of the working environment. The results were expressed in WEST-AG points and WEST points, an economic measure of the risk of impacts on health and productivity expressed as Swedish Krona (SEK) per thousand working hours. The results demonstrated that the risk of injury and ergonomic load during manual feeding and watering was much higher than during semi-automatic feeding and watering at farms with the mobile system. The study also identified other health-risk areas and provided valuable information for further improvement of the working environment in different outdoor pig systems. © 2009 ASABE.

    Paper mills processing recycled paper suffer from biofouling causing problems both in the mill and final product. The total bacterial community composition and identification of specific taxa in the process water and biofilms at the stock preparation and paper machine areas in a mill with recycled paper pulp was described by using a DNA-based approach. Process water in a similar mill was also analyzed to investigate if general trends can be found between mills and over time. Bacterial community profiles, analyzed by terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP), in process water showed that the dominant peaks in the profiles were similar between the two mills, although the overall composition was unique for each mill. When comparing process water and biofilm at different locations within one of the mills, we observed a separation according to location and sample type, with the biofilm from the paper machine being most different. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were generated and 404 clones were screened by RFLP analysis. Grouping of RFLP patterns confirmed that the biofilm from the paper machine was most different. A total of 99 clones representing all RFLP patterns were analyzed, resulting in sequences recovered from nine bacterial phyla, including two candidate phyla. Bacteroidetes represented 45% and Actinobacteria 23% of all the clones. Sequences with similarity to organisms implicated in biofouling, like Chryseobacterium spp. and Brevundimonas spp., were recovered from all samples even though the mill had no process problems during sampling, suggesting that they are part of the natural paper mill community. Moreover, many sequences showed little homology to as yet uncultivated bacteria implying that paper mills are interesting for isolation of new organisms, as well as for bioprospecting. © Society for Industrial Microbiology 2010.

    Sanitation is required for biogas plants handling slaughterhouse and food waste according to EU legislation. The standard method is pasteurization at 70 °C for 60 min, but integrated thermophilic sanitation (ITS), requiring 52 °C for 10 h in the digester, has been approved by the Swedish Board of Agriculture. This work compares pasteurization and ITS regarding heat demand and biogas production, using a full-scale plant in Uppsala, Sweden, as a case study. The plant currently uses pasteurization and thermophilic (52 °C) digestion. The impact of pasteurization on biogas production and process performance was examined at laboratory-scale. The heat demand for pasteurization was surveyed at the full-scale plant, while for ITS a process design was developed and the heat demand was theoretically calculated. The results showed that pasteurization had no significant effect on process performance or biogas production. The heat demand of pasteurization was measured to be 1.92 ± 0.29 MJ (kg VS)−1 (64.7 kWh t−1), while ITS was calculated to require 1.04 MJ (kg VS)−1 (35.1 kWh t−1). This represented 9% and 5% of biogas energy production, respectively. Changing sanitation method to ITS would hence reduce the heat demand at the plant by 46%, corresponding to annual savings of 4380 GJ (1.22 GWh).

    Abstract [en]

    The above-ground growth (stems and foliage) of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) was studied in field experiments in Sweden during 1981 to 1983, in order to investigate the possibility of producing biogas from biomass. Dry matter yields of three varieties were determined at four different harvesting times. The yields varied between 7 and 16 tons of dry matter per hectare. Anaerobic digestion experiments showed that fresh and ensiled above-ground parts of the plant could produce 480-680 litres biogas per kg organic material. The chemical composition of the plant material was determined before and after digestion. An analysis confirmed that economic biogas production from above-ground parts of Jerusalem artichoke is possible under certain conditions. © 1985.
