    Abstract [en]

    X-ray diffraction, SEM analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements were used to characterize three different magnetic beads (Dynabeads®). Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) is the predominant crystalline phase. The nanoparticles were evenly spread in the beads, and the crystal sizes were in the range of 8 nm. The nanoparticles showed superparamagnetic behaviour. The particle's intrinsic magnetization of about 340 kA/m is typical for nanoparticles of maghemite.

    Abstract [en]

    We developed nanoparticles with tailored magnetic properties for direct and sensitive detection of biomolecules in biological samples in a single step. Thermally blocked nanoparticles obtained by thermal hydrolysis, functionalized with specific ligands, are mixed with sample solutions, and the variation of the magnetic relaxation due to surface binding is used to detect the presence of biomolecules. The binding significantly increases the hydrodynamic volume of nanoparticles, thus changing their Brownian relaxation frequency which is measured by a specifically developed AC susceptometer. The system was tested for the presence of Brucella antibodies, a dangerous pathogen causing brucellosis with severe effects both on humans and animals, in serum samples from infected cows and the surface of the nanoparticles was functionalized with lipopolysaccarides (LPS) from Brucella abortus. The hydrodynamic volume of LPS-functionalized particles increased by 25-35% as a result of the binding of the antibodies, measured by changes in the susceptibility in an alternating magnetic field. The method has shown high sensitivity, with detection limit of 0.05 μgmL-1 of antibody in the biological samples without any pretreatment. This magnetic- based assay is very sensitive, cost-efficient, and versatile, giving a direct indication whether the animal is infected or not, making it suitable for point-of-care applications. The functionalization of tailored magnetic nanoparticles can be modified to suit numerous homogeneous assays for a wide range of applications.

    Abstract [en]

    FTTH networks based on Open Access have been very common in Finland and especially Sweden in the past 10 - 15 years. In such networks, an operator-neutral network provider (NP) offers competing service providers access to the end users under non-discriminatory conditions. Among the advertised benefits of open FTTH networks is the development of an open market for high-quality digital societal services, such as e-health and e-social care. During the past six months, the EU Connected for Health project has run three pilots in Finland and Sweden, in which digital home-care services have been tested in live networks by municipalities and home-care givers. The pilots allowed to assess the socio-economic impact of fibre-based digital home-care services, in terms of costs, savings, and quality-of-life impact. During this talk we will present the final results of the study.

    Socio-economic return of FTTH investment in Sweden, a prestudy2014Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    There is a wide range of FTTH initiatives throughout Sweden, with investments made by both telecom operators and public actors. The benefits of the investments are often discussed, especially when the investment is made by municipalities or other public bodies. This preliminary study analyses the socio-economic impacts of the investment in FTTH. The goal of the study was: Is it possible to calculate how much a krona (SEK) invested in fibre will give back to society? The conclusion is that a more comprehensive statistical data and more calculations are needed to give an exact estimate. The study, however, provides an indication that 1 SEK invested over four years brings back a minimum of 1.5 SEK in five years time. The study estimates the need for investment to achieve 100% fibre penetration, identifies and quantifies a number of significant effects of fibre deployment, and then calculates the return on investment. We recommend a more extensive study, in which the proposed model is refined and expanded with more detailed and updated data. This pre-study was sponsored by the Swedish Government’s Broadband Council (Bredbandsforum).

    FTTH-enabled digital home care – A study of economic gains2014Ingår i: 2014 16th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    We analyse the extent of the annual net cost reductions stemming from the introduction of four FTTH- enabled digital services for home care, as recently introduced in the Swedish city of Västerås. In total, between 2014 and 2020, it is projected that Sweden could save up to between €3 and €6 billion if such services were massively deployed today. The cost reductions are analysed for three different types of municipality. The article also shows that there is a significant cost reductions potential for a less extensive (and more realistic) deployment scenario with only 10% of users using digital services.

    The T2* contrast efficacy of paramagnetic contrast agents is dependent on their magnetic properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and the Live Chan NMR method have been used to evaluate the influence of ligand structure on the bulk magnetic susceptibility (BMS) of low-molecular weight (LMW) lanthanide chelates. VSM was also used for the BMS assessment of LMW lanthanide chelates covalently attached to cross-linked starch particles. The ligand structure had no influence on the BMS of the gadolinium (Gd) and dysprosium (Dy) chelates. The mean BMS value of the Dy-chelates was 1.8 fold higher than that of the Gd-chelates. The holmium (Ho) DTPA-BMA chelate had a similar BMS to that of Oy-DTPA-BMA while the lowest BMS was found for europium (Eu(III)) DTPA-BMA. The covalent attachment of Gd-DTPA and Dy-DTPA to a cross-linked starch particle had no impact on their intrinsic magnetic properties. The BMS data were in good accordance with those obtained for non- particulate bound LMW Dy- and Gd-chelates. The magnetic susceptibility of the Gd-DTPA labeled particles was described by the Curie law, indicative of no magnetic interactions between Gd-DTPA molecules. The magnetic susceptibility of the Dy-DTPA labeled particles followed the Curie-Weiss law with a Curie- Weiss temperature of about -2 K, indicating magnetic interactions. The magnetic susceptibility of Dy-DTPA will, however, not be affected by such magnetic interactions at physiological temperatures.

    HTTP adaptive streaming technology has become widely spread in multimedia services because of its ability to provide adaptation to characteristics of various viewing devices and dynamic network conditions. There are various studies targeting the optimization of adaptation strategy. However, in order to provide an optimal viewing experience to the end-user, it is crucial to get knowledge about the Quality of Experience (QoE) of different adaptation schemes. This paper overviews the state of the art concerning subjective evaluation of adaptive streaming QoE and highlights the challenges and open research questions related to QoE assessment. © 2014 IEEE.

    Optofluidic dye lasers may play a significant role in future laser applications in numerous areas, combining wavelength flexibility with integration and ease of operation. Nevertheless, no all-fiber integrated dye lasers have been demonstrated so far. In this paper, we report on a series of optofluidic all-fiber Rhodamine optical sources operating at a repetition rate as high as 1 kHz. Dye bleaching is avoided by circulating the Rhodamine dye during optical excitation. The laser radiation is extracted via conventional fibers that are spliced to the dye-filled capillary active medium. A tuneable amplified spontaneous emission source, a multimode laser, and a few transverse-mode laser are demonstrated by adjusting the setup. Threshold pump energies as low as similar to 1 mu J and slope efficiencies of up to mu 9% were obtained, indicating the potential for realworld applications in areas such as spectroscopy and biomedicine.

    After 40 years of research development, today continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is demonstrating the benefit it provides for millions with diabetes. To provide in vivo accuracy, new permselective membranes mediated systems have been developed to prevent enzyme saturation to minimize interference signals. Early in vivo implanted sensor research clearly showed that the foreign body response was a more difficult issue to overcome. Understanding the biological interface circumventing the inflammatory response continue to drive development of a CGM sensor with accuracy reliability performance suitable in a closed-loop artificial pancreas. Along with biocompatible polymer development, other complimentary algorithm data analysis techniques have improved the performance of commercial systems significantly. For example, the mean average relative difference of Dexcom€™s CGM system improved from 26 to 14€‰% its use-life was extended from 3 to 7 d. Significant gains in usability, including size, flexibility, insertion, calibration, data interface, have been incorporated into new generations of commercial CGM systems. Besides Medtronic, Dexcom, Abbott, other major players are also investing in CGM. Becton Dickinson is conducting clinical trials with an optical galactose glucose binding system. Development of fully implanted sensor systems fulfills the desire for a discreet, reliable CGM system. Research continues to find innovative ways to help make living with diabetes easier more normal, new segments are being pursued (intensive care unit, surgery, behavior modification) in which CGM is being utilized._x000D_

    Abstract [en]

    Here we demonstrate the use of a functional dopant as a fast and simple way to tune the chemical affinity and selectivity of polypyrrole films. More specifically, a boronic-functionalised dopant, 4-N-Pentylphenylboronic Acid (PBA), was used to provide to polypyrrole films with enhanced affinity towards diols. In order to prove the proposed concept, two model systems were explored: (i) the capture and the electrochemical detection of dopamine and (ii) the adhesion of bacteria onto surfaces. The chemisensor, based on overoxidised polypyrrole boronic doped film, was shown to have the ability to capture and retain dopamine, thus improving its detection; furthermore the chemisensor showed better sensitivity in comparison with overoxidised perchlorate doped films. The adhesion of bacteria, Deinococcus proteolyticus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae, onto the boric doped polypyrrole film was also tested. The presence of the boronic group in the polypyrrole film was shown to favour the adhesion of sugar-rich bacterial cells when compared with a control film (Dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS) doped film) with similar morphological and physical properties. The presented single step synthesis approach is simple and fast, does not require the development and synthesis of functional monomers, and can be easily expanded to the electrochemical, and possibly chemical, fabrication of novel functional surfaces and interfaces with inherent pre-defined sensing and chemical properties.

    Abstract [en]

    An optical fiber component and setup were developed to insert and remove gases from hollow-core optical fibers, allowing gas/light mixing over the length of the fiber for gas sensing applications. Transmitted signals acquired at the output of the fiber contain information regarding absorption occurring inside the fiber, providing a spectroscopic signature of the gas or gases in the fiber. Spectra for 1 atm of acetylene (C2H2) around 1525 nm and 1 atm of carbon dioxide (CO2) around 1432 nm were obtained and compared to HITRAN data, showing good agreement. The setup can also be used to prepare gas cells.

    A setup utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for performing elemental analysis in order to classify metallic samples is currently under construction. The setup uses short laser pulses to locally ablate the sample create luminous plasmas. The emitted light is analyzed spectroscopically for instantaneous determination of the elemental composition. A table-top system based on a compact CCD spectrometer has been constructed combined with fast software in order to test the concept of remote, single shot material classification with LIBS. Certified reference materials with known elemental compositions were used in the laboratory tests. We report on successful laboratory tests in which samples were classified using an analysis based on optical emission following a single laser pulse with an operating distance of approximately 1 m. Details regarding field tests of this versatile promising technique are discussed._x000D_

    Abstract [en]

    We study the growth of self-assembled InGaSb/InAs quantum dots (QDs) investigate how gallium can be used to reduce the optical transition energy in the InSb QD system. InGaSb QDs were grown on InAs (0 0 1) substrates by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) the material was characterized by photoluminescence (PL) measurements. A PL peak wavelength is demonstrated beyond 8 Î¼m at 77 K, which is significantly longer than what has been reported for InSb QDs. The results suggest that InGaSb QDs can be grown at a larger size than InSb QDs leading to reduced confinement in the QDs._x000D_

    We review current synthetic routes to magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications. We classify the different approaches used depending on their ability to generate magnetic particles that are either single-core (containing only one magnetic core, i.e. a single domain nanocrystal) or multi-core (containing several magnetic cores, i.e. single domain nanocrystals). The synthesis of single-core magnetic nanoparticles requires the use of surfactants during the particle generation, and careful control of the particle coating to prevent aggregation. Special attention has to be paid to avoid the presence of any toxic reagents after the synthesis if biomedical applications are intended. Several approaches exist to obtain multi-core particles based on the coating of particle aggregates; nevertheless, the production of multi-core particles with good control of the number of magnetic cores per particle, and of the degree of polydispersity of the core sizes, is still a difficult task. The control of the structure of the particles is of great relevance for biomedical applications as it has a major influence on the magnetic properties of the materials.

    Abstract [en]

    Energy-band model offsets, trap density distributions and gate leakage characteristics of MOS capacitors with PECVD and thermal gate oxides on 3C- and 4H-SiC were compared. The difference in trap energy distributions between the polytypes demonstrated in this experiment confirms that the 3C-SiC polytype is less vulnerable to near-interface traps (NIT) which are found in high density in the 4H-SiC. It was also shown that the examined 3C-SiC substrates demonstrated higher leakage currents due to higher dislocation concentration compared with 4H-SiC. Finally, the energy band model of the SiC MOS devices was described quantitatively which could be considered in further development of the devices and processes.

    Abstract [en]

    We have used high-Tc SQUIDs to study the phase transition in a film of Mn3O4. The film was positioned on top of the SQUID, and the temperature of the film and the SQUID was varied in the range 30-60 K. By monitoring the voltage at the SQUID output we were able to observe a reproducable shift in the SQUID response in the range 30-50 K. This shift is related to the transition from the paramagnetic to the ferrimagnetic state of the Mn3O4 film.
