    High capacity city transport with intelligent access - A Swedish case study of transporting excavated material2022Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This project studies how the HCT-concept (High Capacity Transport) can be applied in cities, by performing pilots in Varberg and Stockholm. The project will test the hypothesis that the HCT-concept will improve both productivity and transport efficiency and thereby reduce CO2 by up to 40%. The pilots include tests of new optimized trucks and new concepts with connected trucks, road machines and bridges. Demonstration of digital access control including geofencing of speed and routes will be included. A system analysis on a societal level will be performed, with the target to incorporate HCT-city in the existing HCT roadmap. The results will be a foundation for a strategy including dispensations and regulatory changes on national roads and a recommendation how HCT-city can be designed to reach the highest possible productivity and transport efficiency.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a simplified representation of the fire load in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to represent the effect of large-scale travelling fire and to highlight the relevance of such an approach whilst coupling the CFD results with finite element method (FEM) to evaluate related steel temperatures, comparing the numerical outcomes with experimental measurements. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents the setup of the CFD simulations (FDS software), its corresponding assumptions and the calibration via two natural fire tests whilst focusing on gas temperatures and on steel temperatures measured on a central column. For the latter, two methods are presented: one based on EN 1993-1-2 and another linking CFD and FEM (SAFIR® software). Findings: This paper suggests that such an approach can allow for an acceptable representation of the travelling fire both in terms of fire spread and steel temperatures. The inevitable limitations inherent to the simplifications made during the CFD simulations are also discussed. Regarding steel temperatures, the two methods lead to quite similar results, but with the ones obtained via CFD–FEM coupling are closer to those measured. Originality/value: This work has revealed that the proposed simplified representation of the fire load appears to be appropriate to evaluate the temperature of steel structural elements within reasonable limits on computational time, making it potentially desirable for practical applications. This paper also presents the first comparisons of FDS–SAFIR® coupling with experimental results, highlighting promising outcomes.

    TRAFIR: Characterization of TRAvelling FIRes in large compartments2020Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Inspection of recent fire events in large compartments reveals them to have a great deal of non-uniformity, they generally burn locally and move across floor plates over a period of time. This phenomenon which generates transient heating of the structure is idealized as “travelling fire”.A first series of tests was launched to define a fire load representative of an office building according to Eurocodes. Additional tests where the fire dynamics were controlled were launched to develop an understanding of the fire exposure to steel structures.Then, a second series of large scale tests were performed in real building dimensions. These tests had no artificial control over the dynamics, which allowed a realistic characterization of the fire. The fire load was identical for all tests, only the openings were modified.CFD numerical models were developed to reproduce the experimental campaign and to launch parametrical analyses. This allowed to provide information concerning the conditions which may lead (or not) to a travelling fire scenario.An analytical model for the characterization of a travelling fire was developed and implemented in a simple calculation tool. It allows to evaluate the fire location, the gas temperatures in the flames, the heat fluxes in the different parts of the compartment and the temperature in a steel member. In addition, the methodology is introduced in the FEM software SAFIR and OpenSees.Ultimately, a design guide was prepared including worked examples which are detailed step-by-step and for which the influence of the inputs on the results is analysed.

    Abstract [en]

    The traffic system is transforming into a highly complex system of systems with increasing connectivity and automation. Engineering such a system of systems requires close interaction between related stakeholders including authorities, car manufacturers, and the service and technology providers, both from the organizational and technical perspective. This paper describes a cloud-based traffic control system that provides a platform to support cross-sector interoperable information sharing, and data intelligence for future connected and autonomous vehicle integration. The system is engineered from a system of systems perspective with multi-stakeholder engagement and is designed to be cloud-native for stakeholder and service scalability. The paper discusses the motivation of the system, followed by a detailed description on the system architecture and the constituent systems. Supported services are presented with their working process, information flow, as well as their public demonstrations.

    Public and private partnership platform for quik and effective implementation of digital transport infrastructure2020Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This pre-study aims at analyzing the needs of digital infrastructure for connected and automated transport systems in Sweden and building roadmaps with concrete actions for accelerating the implementation of digital infrastructure. The pre-study has conducted extensive literature studies on projects, activities, and policies related to digital infrastructure in Sweden, the EU, and globally. The pre-study focuses on supporting existing activities, goals, and roadmaps within the Swedish transport sector and follows closely the roadmap for a connected and automated road transport system from Trafikverket. Expert interviews with both public and private stakeholders have been conducted to collect opinions and to formulate concrete actions. The report consists of mainly two parts, the description of physical and digital transport infrastructure, and the identified focus areas, roadmaps, and action plans. Also, state-of-the-art digital transport infrastructure is given as an appendix to support the roadmap. The report describes physical digital transport infrastructure as the IT, communication, and data infrastructure that together with regulations and standards enables interoperable and digital cooperation between connected vehicles, people, infrastructure, and other data sources. It is a system of systems that requires both bottom-up and top-down approaches with balanced public and private investments. A layered description is given including the communication infrastructure, transport data eco-system, applications and services, and organizational partnership. The report proposes the establishment of a long-term public-private partnership platform to join forces to accelerate the implementation of physical digital transport infrastructure. The platform requires strong engagement from all stakeholders for addressing common challenges and for stimulating innovative policies and business models. As a trigger, eight focus areas are proposed including connectivity, positioning, control tower, data, architecture, evaluation, policies and regulations, and business models. For each area, the roadmap describes in detail the actions that should be taken together with the expected results for the year 2021 to 2025. The transport system is a system of systems that evolves fast. Stakeholder roles and responsibilities may change with new business models and new actors emerge all the time. To accommodate such evolution, the roadmap proposes iterative development processes. The proposed actions are by no means fixed, instead, the stakeholders need to yearly conduct evaluations, agree on prioritized tasks and expected results, identify gaps, and decide on new prioritized activities. The pre-study is financed by the strategic innovation program Drive Sweden, which is a joint investment by Vinnova, Formas and Energimyndigheten, and Trafikverket through the project Plattform för snabb och effektiv implementering av digital infrastruktur för transportsystem with project number 2019-04787

    Abstract [en]

    Despite the strong interests in creating data economy, automotive industries are creating data silos with each stakeholder maintaining its own data cloud. Federated learning (FL), designed for privacy-preserving collaborative Machine Learning (ML), offers a promising method that allows multiple stakeholders to share information through ML models without the exposure of raw data, thus natively protecting privacy. Motivated by the strong need for automotive collaboration and the advancement of FL, this paper investigates how FL could enable privacy-preserving information sharing for automotive industries. We first introduce the statuses and challenges for automotive data sharing, followed by a brief introduction to FL. We then present a comprehensive discussion on potential applications of federated learning to enable an automotive collaborative ecosystem. To illustrate the benefits, we apply FL for driver action classification and demonstrate the potential for collaborative machine learning without data sharing.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of a set of textile reinforced reactive powder concrete (RPC) mixes that have been prepared in the framework of the SESBE project which aims to develop facade panels for the building envelope. In order to reduce the environmental impact, high concentration of type I and II mineral additions were added to the mixtures (up to 40% of cement replacement). The mechanical properties of the materials were analysed showing high values of compression strength thus indicating no disadvantages in the compression mechanical performance (∼140 MPa) and modulus of elasticity. In order to enable the use of these materials in building applications, textile reinforcement was introduced by incorporating layers of carbon fibre grids into the RPC matrix. The flexural performance of these samples was analysed showing high strength values and suitability for their further utilization.

    Effektiva åtgärder mot spridning av skärvätskedimma och luftvägsproblem från skärvätskor2015Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Förekomst av utbrott av luftvägsbesvär har rapporterats vid arbete med skärvätskor. Tidigare forskning om luftvägsbesvär från skärvätskor visar att flera ämnen som förekommer i skärvätskedimma kan bidra till besvären. Studier har gjorts vid åtta företag för att undersöka hur skärvätskedimma sprids i arbetsmiljön och hur spridning av och exponering för skärvätskedimma kan undvikas. Samma skärvätska kan uppfattas som både mycket bra och mycket problematisk på olika företag. Detta tyder på att mikrobiologiska faktorer bidrar till besvären. Skötseln av skärvätskan är viktig för att minska förekomsten av besvär. Val av skärvätska och skärvätskans kemiska sammansättning har också stor betydelse. Inom projektet har mätningar gjorts av partikelhalten i luft som indikator på skärvätske-dimma. Denna mätmetod har visat sig vara effektiv för att identifiera källor som sprider skärvätskedimma. Projektets slutsatser är att besvär kan uppkomma även med bra skärvätskor och även om skärvätskan sköts väl. Därför är det klokt att utforma arbetsmetoder, maskiner, inkapslingar och ventilation så att spridning av och exponering för skärvätskedimma undviks. Befintliga inkapslingar och ventilation fungerar ofta inte tillräckligt bra för att effektivt fånga in skärvätskedimman. Insatser som minskar spridning av och exponering för skärvätskor är bland annat att säkerställa att befintliga inkapslingar och ventilation av maskiner fungerar väl, vilket de ofta inte gör idag. Dagen praxis ger inte tillräckligt bra skydd mot skärvätskedimma. Genom god utformning, kan luftvägsbesvär undvikas, även om skärvätskan skulle infekteras och mikroorganismer växa till. Dessutom behöver arbetsmetoderna ses över så att exponering för skärvätskedimma undviks. Åtgärder behövs för att hindra skärvätska från att ansamlas i ventilationssystemet. Luftrenare som placeras i ventilationssystemet direkt efter de maskiner där skärvätska används är en effektiv åtgärd som minskar förekomsten av skärvätska i frånluften och ger möjlighet att bättre dimensionera processutsug.

    Godstransporter på väg står för en ökande andel1 av utsläppen av växthusgasen CO2. Sverige har förbundit2 sig att minska utsläppen av CO2. Målsättningen med projektet är att minska utsläppen av koldioxid i relativa tal genom att minska antalet fordon och att öka godsvolymen per fordon. I projektet har, med föreskrift och dispens från myndigheter, en fordonskombination med dragbil som drar två semitrailrar istället för endast en semitrailer tagits fram och körts under snart 18 månader. Målet om minskat utsläpp har uppnåtts. Projektet har visat på en minskning på 27% i både CO2 och bränsle per transporterad godsmängd. Detta sker utan någon negativ påverkan på trafiksäkerhet, fordons eller infrastruktur. Vidare fungerar logistiken utmärkt då fordonskonceptet bygger på existerande transportenheter, s.k. moduler. Projektet kommer att fortsätta med ytterligare en etapp där den existerande kombinationen uppdateras samt en helt ny typ av fordonskombination. Visionen är att fordonskombinationer av typ Duo2 och andra hög kapacitets transporter (HCT) ska tillåtas i allmän trafik och på så sätt nå målet om kraftigt minskade utsläpp av växthusgaser från vägtransporter. NVF rapporten3 1/2013 sammanfattar att i stället för småskaliga försök med godkännande av varje enskild fordonskombination så bör framgångsreceptet snarast skalas upp i omfattning, eftersom ett större antal högkapacitetsfordon kan göra stor nytta för samhället. De viktigaste slutsatserna är att Duotrailer: - kan ge kraftigt minskade utsläpp av CO2 i relativa tal - fungerar i praktiken då det bygger vidare på dagens moduler - har inte visat på några negativa effekter på trafiksäkerhet - tar upp mindre vägyta, mindre trängsel, för samma mängd transporterad last

    This guide is a review of the most recent European results from reports which shared experience and knowledge on how to introduce circularity in procurement documents. It also contains the authors’ own conclusions and proposes a business model and a list of possible requirements that could be introduced in procurements by municipalities.

    It refers to the definition of circular building, to the principles behind it. It shows how to use the valuable experience of sustainability and how to pass from a sustainable procurement (Green public procurement) to circular procurement.

    The guide is meant to be a reference, a supporting document for public decisions-makers when choosing criteria for procurement document of new constructions.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted on multiple-shear joints consisting of gusset plates made of either LVL or plywood connected to the timber members by means of full-threaded self-tapping screw. Both hardwood and softwood timber based gusset plates with different thickness and face grain orientations were investigated. The results show that this type of connection has an excellent structural performance, with not very dissimilar strength from that of comparable connections which makes use of slotted-in steel plates and dowels. It is believed, therefore, that the proposed solution can be a valid alternative to the more traditional timber connection with slotted-in steel plates and dowels.

    Since the buildings and construction sector is one of the main areas responsible for energy consumption and emissions, focusing on their refurbishment and promoting actions in this direction will be helpful to achieve an EU Agenda objective of making Europe climate-neutral by 2050. One step towards the renovation action is the exploitation of digital tools into a BIM framework. The scope of the research contained in this paper is to improve the management of information throughout the different stages of the renovation process, allowing an interoperable exchange of data among the involved stakeholders; the development of an innovative BIM-based toolkit is the answer to the research question. The research and results obtained related with the development of an interoperable BIM-based toolkit for efficient renovation in buildings in the framework of the European research project BIM4EEB. Specifically, the developed BIM management system allows the exchange of the data among the different tools, using open interoperable formats (as IFC) and linked data, in a Common Data Environment, to be used by the different stakeholders. Additionally, the developed tools allow the stakeholders to manage different stages of the renovation process, facilitating efficiencies in terms of time reduction and improving the resulting quality. The validity of each tool with respect to existing practices is demonstrated here, and the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed tools are described in the workflow detailing issues such as interoperability, collaboration, integration of different solutions, and time consuming existing survey processes. © 2021 by the authors.

    Abstract [en]

    There is reason to believe that factors such as physical exertion and behavioural changes will influence the ascending walking speed and ultimately the possibility of satisfactory evacuation. To study these effects, a 2-year research project was initiated with the focus on effects of physical exertion on walking speeds, physiological performance and behaviours during long ascending evacuations. Two sets of experiments on human performance during ascending long stairs, with a height of 48 and 109 m, were performed. The results include aspects such as walking speeds, physical exertion (oxygen consumption, heart rates and electromyography data), perceived exertion and behavioural changes, showing that physical work capacity affects walking speeds in case of long ascending evacuation and should be considered while using long ascending evacuation. Analysis of both walking and vertical speeds is recommended because it provides additional insights on the impact of stair configuration on vertical displacement and the importance of not using the same value for walking speed for different stairs because the design of the stairs has an impact. The novel datasets presented in this paper are deemed to provide useful information for fire safety engineers both for assisting fire safety design as well as the calibration of evacuation modelling tools.

    Interiörer står för en betydande del av en byggnads totala miljöpåverkan under dess livscykel. Det har uppskattats att tusentals ton interiörer kan återbrukas och att dessa representerar tusentals ton koldioxidekvivalenter i klimatbesparingspotential. Kravkriterierna för Hållbar Interiör har utvecklats i syfte att komma åt just den potentialen och till rekommendationer på praxis som kan öka återbruk (IVL NrB 2351). Kriterierna fokuserar på att förebygga vanligt förekommande fenomen inom interiör- och inredningsområdet. Till exempel är det vanligt att objekt i interiören rivs eller monteras ner under inredningsprojekt oavsett skick och behov, vilket innebär att befintlig interiör ersätts med nyproducerad interiör. Det sker ofta utan analys av möjligheter att tillvarata befintlig interiör. Kriterierna tar också hänsyn till utmaningar avseende hållbara val vid planering och drift av lokaler och hållbara val av interiörer. Kravkriterierna i Hållbar Interiör bygger på en logik som följer prioritetsordningen: 1. Tillräcklighetsprincipen: Utvärdera om objektet behövs, identifiera alternativa lösningar som uppfyller behoven av interiör. 2. Använd länge: Behåll inredning, laga eller renovera vid behov. 3. Återbruka inredning från extern part 4. Inköp av ny inredning med hög miljöprestanda Kravkriterierna omfattar tre delar som viktas samman under en slutlig bedömning av uppfyllelse av kraven i detta dokument.

    Background: The urban freight transportation (UFT) system is an essential facilitator for the smooth functioning of city logistics. It also contributes significantly to transportation-related issues, such as vehicular congestion, pollution, accidents, infrastructure damage and other related problems. Objectives: This study aimed to understand and compare the urban freight traffic characteristics and their impact in two cities: Gothenburg, Sweden and Delhi, India, having high socio-economic differences. The findings of this study will be helpful for practitioners and policymakers in the development and successful implementation of UFT management policies. Method: Using the cordon count (traffic data), retailers’ interviews (receivers’ data) and freight vehicle drivers’ interviews, UFT characteristics such as sector-specific contribution, trip characteristics, vehicular characteristics and negative impacts in terms of external cost to society are evaluated. This study also discusses the prediction of attracted trips in the study zone using freight trip attraction (models. Results: About 75% of the trips in Gothenburg and 92% of the trips in Delhi are made by light commercial and other small-sized vehicles. Gothenburg has formally organised sectors involved in freight vehicle movement; however, Delhi has informally organised sectors. Conclusion: The results revealed substantial differences in characteristics of freight trip operations in both the cities, compared with few similarities. Measures taken considering the specific local attributes of freight traffic and stakeholders’ requirement may lead to a sustainable transportation system in cities. © 2022. The Authors.

    As connected, electric, and autonomous vehicle (AV) services are developed for cities, the research is conclusive that the use of these services must be shared to achieve maximum efficiency. Yet, few agencies have prioritised designing an AV system that focuses on dynamic ridepooling, and there remains a gap in the understanding of what makes people willing to share their rides. However, in 2017, the Australian transport authority Transport for New South Wales launched over a dozen trials for on-demand, shared public transport, including AVs. In this paper, we investigate the user willingness-to-share, based on experiences from one of these trials. Four focus groups (19 participants in total) were held in New South Wales with active users of either the trialled on-demand dynamic ridepooling service (Keoride) or commercial ridepooling (UberPool). Through thematic analysis of the focus group conversations, the cost, comfort, convenience, safety, community culture, and trust in authority emerged as factors that influenced the willingness-to-share. When presented with driverless scenarios, the focus group participants had significant concerns about the unknown behaviour of their co-passengers, revealing sharing anxiety as a significant barrier to the adoption of shared AVs. This paper identifies previously disregarded factors that influence the adoption of AVs and dynamic ridepooling and offers insights on how potential users’ sharing anxiety can be mitigated.

    Focus groups on shared, autonomous vehicles (SAVs) in New South Wales expressed “sharing anxiety”—an intense concern about the prospect of sharing their mobility journey with strangers, without a driver or authority figure present. This presents a significant barrier to the acceptance of SAVs, particularly autonomous public and on-demand transport (ODT), which is a major focus for Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW). Given this potential barrier, we interviewed (N = 13) operators, academics, and regulators with TfNSW to assess their role and abilities in overcoming sharing anxiety. However, our findings revealed a relative lack of awareness from experts in the mobility industry about the existence of sharing anxiety in users, suggesting additional barriers to adoption. We make suggestions for policy considerations for stakeholders that could mitigate sharing anxiety: promoting dynamic ridepooling products in commercial services, using tax breaks as incentivization; requiring ODT services and operators in jurisdiction to use a standardized, unified interface for users (“single-app”); shared, on-demand transport services likely need longer incubation/pilot periods in order for the sharing behavior to become culturally established. We conclude with a reflection on how COVID-19 has impacted the development of shared mobility and suggest further exploration in policy implementation. © 2021 by the authors.

    The widespread use of electric lighting has revolutionised society but brought unintended consequences, notably light pollution, impacting ecosystems and human circadian rhythms. Concerns about anthropogenic light at night (ALAN) have prompted innovative solutions, such as spectral tuning of light sources. In Europe, a recent focus involves the enforcement of red light in outdoor settings to minimise ALAN’s impact, particularly on bats. This mini review synthesises literature to provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the use of red light outdoors. There is a need for further examination of the potential ecological consequences of red light, considering challenges in lighting design functionality and broader impacts on diverse species.

    One of the major issues with radiation from the natural isotopes 40K, 226Ra (238U) and 232Th and their decay products is the forthcoming legislation from the European Commission in relation to its Basic Safety Directive (2014). The European legislation is mandatory and could not be overthrown by national legislation. Hence, even though the BSS is still a directive it is foreseen as becoming a regulation in due time.

    The reference value of the natural isotopes, from a radiation point of view, set for building materials is 1 mSv per year (EC, 2014). Earlier recommendations (The Radiation Protection Authorities in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, 2000) within the Nordic countries set an upper limit at 2 mSv per year of radiation from building materials.

    The main objective within the frame of the thesis was to investigate gamma radiation in relation to Swedish aggregates and their use as final construction products and the applicability and use of a model (EC, 1999) for building materials to calculate the effective dose within a pre-defined room. Part of the thesis also investigates different methodologies that can be used to assess the radiation in a construction material made up of several constituents (building materials) and aims to show that for some purposes as for the construction industries (precast concrete), that a hand-held spectrometer can be used with good accuracy, even though the object is limited in thickness and size. Secondly, the author proposes a simplified way of assessing the radiation in a construction material by use of correlation coefficient of a specified recipe by use of a hand-held spectrometer. Moreover, an understanding of the different building materials´ contribution to the finalized construction product, e.g. concrete is demonstrated, and how to achieve a good control of the radiation levels in the concrete building.

    The reference level for effective dose due to gamma radiation from building materials and construction products used for dwellings is set to 1 mSv per year (EC, 1996, 1999), (CE, 2014). Given the specific conditions presented by the EC in report 112 (1999) considering building and construction materials, an I-index of 1 may generate an effective dose of 1 mSv per year. This paper presents a comparison of the activity concentrations of 4 0K, 226Ra and 232Th of aggregates and when these aggregates constitute a part of concrete. The activity concentration assessment tool for building and construction materials, the I-index, introduced by the EC in 1996, is used in the comparison. A comparison of the I-indices values are also made with a recently presented dose model by Hoffman (2014), where density variations of the construction material and thickness of the construction walls within the building are considered. There was a ~16-19% lower activity index in concretes than in the corresponding aggregates. The model by Hoffman further implies that the differences between the I-indices of aggregates and the concretes' final effective doses are even larger. The difference is due, mainly to a dilution effect of the added cement with low levels of natural radioisotopes, but also to a different and slightly higher subtracted background value (terrestrial value) used in the modeled calculation of the revised I-index by Hoffman (2014). Only very minimal contributions to the annual dose could be related to the water and additives used, due to their very low content of radionuclides reported.

    Eco-neighborhoods with gardens on concrete decks are for several reasons increasingly being prescribed today in major Swedish cities. However, there is a lack of knowledge, experience, standards and guidelines as well as collaboration between parties and stakeholders when installing such systems. It is incredibly important to avoid any leakage during the lifetime of a green roof garden but this cannot be completely guaranteed with today’s installation practice and project management. At Sustainable City 2014 in Siena, we presented a paper about a new project aiming at bringing together researchers, government and industry to collaborative development of new and attractive solutions for green roof gardens with consideration to the environment and high requirements for durability, materials, construction and energy efficiency. This paper is a continuation of the paper presented in Siena and reports on the most recent results from the collaborative project which will finalize in November 2016. After that, the project will be further evaluated in a proposed continuation project for another couple of years.

    This paper investigates Swedish recycling centres from the users perspective. The aim was to describe the characteristics and experiences of the users and their activities when sorting and disposing of waste, and to identify improvements for the users. The typical recycling centre user is a recently retired man, living in a house with a garden, having travelled 5 km alone in his own car. The users requested longer opening hours and better information available at home and at the recycling centre. The major difficulty for the users is to understand which fraction their waste belongs to, and consequently into which container they should throw it. The most important sources of sorting information, in addition to experience from earlier visits, are signs and asking the personnel. Although the service at recycling centres is perceived positively by a majority of users. substantial improvements can still be made, and a number of such suggestions are given.

    Abstract [en]

    This study provides an analysis on the fire safety of passengers and the fire protection of coaches and buses. A brief review of major bus fire incidents, an overview of current regulations in Europe, and their limitations are presented. The study finds that the current small-scale fire test methods described in UN ECE Reg No. 118 need to be replaced by test methods that can assess the reaction to fire of materials when exposed to ignition sources of varying sizes. To address these shortcomings, the study proposed an expert recommendation to update the material fire safety requirements and testing for buses. Additional measures are proposed, derived from objectives and strategies applied in other transport sectors, and can be tested through existing European and international standards, which are widely used by several industries. These measures aim to extend the time with tenable conditions for a safe evacuation in case of fire, reduce the degree of damage to buses, reduce the risk for fast and excessive thermal exposure on modern energy carriers needed for a more sustainable transport sector. © 2023 The Authors.

    Projektet Nationell samverkan mellan innovationsplattformar för hållbara attraktiva städer har sedan november 2016 arbetat med kunskapsutbyte och lärande mellan de sex städerna Borås, Göteborg, Kiruna, Lund, Malmö och Stockholm som ingår i Vinnovasatsningen “Utveckling av innovationsplattformar för hållbara attraktiva städer”. Alla städer har, på lite olika sätt, tagit sig an utmaningen att bygga innovationskapacitet och hitta vägar runt hinder för innovation för hållbar stadsutveckling.Tillsammans har städerna utvecklat unik kunskap om lokala samhällsutmaningars komplexitet och på vilket sätt innovationsarbete kan främja en hållbar utveckling. Fokus för arbetet har varit gränsöverskridande samarbete och på vilket sätt gränsgångare, ledarskap, organisationskultur och stödjande strukturer kan bygga kapacitet och mobilisera en omställning för hållbar utveckling. Med andra ord hur man kan utveckla innovationskapacitet och innovationsledning för hållbar samhällsutveckling i städer.Redan i halvtidsrapporten Leda och organisera innovation för hållbara städer och samhällen -erfarenheter från innovationsplattformarna 2017, redovisades viktiga erfarenheter med konkreta exempel från de olika städernas innovationsplattformar. I rapporten beskrivs också några av de samhällsomvälvande hållbarhetsutmaningar som gör behovet av radikalt nya lösningar ocharbetssätt akut. Rapporten argumenterade för att många av utmaningarna är så komplexa att det behövs ett helhetsperspektiv som inkluderar samverkande aktörer från både regionala instanser, den statliga nivån och nationella och internationella nätverk, för att möjliggöra innovation och förändring på det lokala planet. Den här rapporten bygger vidare på dessa erfarenheter, med en rad slutsatser och exempel som kan användas på kommunal nivå, men den innehåller också ett förslag på en agenda för nationella och regionala aktörer.Under det senaste året, med bland annat alarmerande klimatrapporter, fortsatt ökade sociala klyftor, en extrem värmebölja som stressade samhällssystemen och politisk turbulens både nationellt och internationellt har vår övertygelse stärkts än mer; innovationsplattformar är centrala för att utifrån sina unika lokala förutsättningar utforska och utveckla lösningar för hur vi ska klara av samhällets hållbarhetsutmaningar.

Performance-based design approaches are commonly categorised as deterministic or probabilistic methods and should be applied in accordance with the applicable regulations, building codes and standards. This chapter provides references to detailed information that should be consulted when undertaking performance-based designs.

    Denna rapport är ett arbetsdokument som har efterfrågats i arbetet inom Gothenburg Green City Zone (GGCZ), där det pågår en process för att ta fram en mer detaljerad planering för en övergång till helt fossilfria transporter i Göteborg. Rapporten resonerar först kring zonbegreppet, vilken forskning som tidigare gjorts, vilka slags zoner som redan finns och som implementerats i Sverige och Europa. Rapporten föreslår sedan en metodik för hur zoner kan definieras och hur en generell zonindelning skulle kunna upprättas som skulle kunna användas som mall för både Göteborg och andra städer. Arbetet är inte färdigt utan kommer att fortsätta under kommande år både inom RISE och tillsammans med övriga samarbetspartners. Det som kvarstår är att definiera i detalj vilka parametrar och egenskaper som gör en viss zon unik, exempelvis genom mätetal som stadsdelars täthet, demografi, socioekonomiska förhållanden, infrastruktur samt befintlig framkomlighet. Målet med arbetet har varit att utveckla och förbättra kunskapen om zonmetodiken, visa på dess möjliga fördelar och utveckla ett verktyg för att användas i omställningen och att hjälpa Göteborg och andra städer att lyckas med omställningen mot klimatneutrala transporter till år 2030.

    Abstract [sv]

    Denna rapport är ett resultat av en förstudie kring en logistik- och transportlösning (som kan realiseras i form av en gemensam hubb) för aktörer som är placerade i evenemangsstråket i Göteborg. Rapporten svarar på frågor kring nulägesanalys av aktörernas logistiklösningar, leveranstrafik inom evenemangsstråket, samt hur leveranstrafik kan se ut under 2030+ om inga förändringar i leverans/logistikupplägget görs. En viktig slutsats som framgår är att det krävs åtgärder som minskar leveranstrafiken, eftersom elektrifiering av fordon inte kan eliminera trängsel och buller som står för den största delen av de samhällsekonomiska kostnaderna. Utan förändringar i logistikupplägget och fordonsflottan förväntas de samhällsekonomiska kostnaderna öka med cirka 30%. Förändringar i logistikupplägget kan nås genom ett optimerad trafikflöde, vilket i sin tur kan realiseras genom en gemensam samlastningshubb för små och fragmenterade flöden som kan minska antalet anlöp och fordonstrafiken i området. Baserat på intervjuer med aktörerna, studiebesök, studerande av underlag, workshops och analys av logistikbehoven, kan det sammanfattas att verksamheterna, utmaningar och logistikbehoven i stort sett är ganska lika. En gemensam extern hubb kan frigöra yta hos verksamheterna som kan användas för att skapa nya affärsmöjligheter. En möjlighet för att upphandla en tredjeparts logistik- och transportlösning är att bygga ett konsortium där alla aktörer delar på kostnaden för terminalhantering samt samlastning/samkörning. Det finns stora möjligheter att hitta lösningar för logistikhubb som uppfyller kraven på geografisk närhet och säkra leveranser i trafiksystemet – och det är klokt att anpassa leveranstider för att undvika trängsel. Det finns en vilja hos aktörerna att minska transporterna, anpassa sin verksamhet för effektivisering vid mottagning och förvaring, ställa om mot fossilfrihet och på det sättet bidra till transporteffektivitet som krävs för att nå mål inom klimatneutralitet 2030. Det finns stora behov för förändring i trafikflödet inom GGCZ och det finns en stor potential att optimera det genom att konsolidera och styra leveranser.

    The objective with the present project was to combine studies of textbooks and masonry constructions with laboratory analyses of historical mortars from the time period 1800 to 1950. The objective was to investigate the development of knowledge and craftsmanship of the mason during this period. The three different sources display the same trends from binder rich to binder poor and to mortars based on cement and lime mixes. There was a change from a complex and varying use of different mortars in the 19th century to a simplified and standardized use in the 20th century. This process also includes a change to a centralised and industrialized production of binders. A consequence of this was that a loss of the craftmans knowledge of how to handle different hydraulic binders and pozzolans. The later part of the period was characterised in a loss of knowledge in this aspect for all actors working with masonry and renders.

    In this paper, we use the middle-out perspective to analyze the diffusion of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in Swedish rural areas and small towns. In Sweden, electrification of the transport system is a priority, particularly in car-dependent rural areas. However, the transition to electromobility mainly takes place in major urban areas. To understand the dynamics of the transition to electrified transport and identify how it may be facilitated, we identify top actors, bottom actors, and middle actors and analyze how middle actors exert influence. Our case study is based on in-depth interviews with civil servants who work with energy and transport issues in rural areas throughout Sweden and with representatives of energy companies and government agencies. We show that three middle actors are important: municipalities, local energy companies, and local car dealers. The municipalities and local energy companies mainly exert influence by knowledge diffusion and by contributing to projects such as charging infrastructure development. The car dealers are examples of middle actors who could play a central role by influencing consumers, but who currently often obstruct electric vehicle diffusion. We find that the support of top actors is very important for middle actors to be able to facilitate diffusion of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. Municipalities are in a unique position to use their knowledge, local networks, and sideways and upwards connections to strengthen the agency and capacity of citizens and small businesses (bottom actors). However, as small Swedish municipalities often have limited resources, long-term support from government agencies (top actors) is crucial. As middle actors are so important for the diffusion of electric vehicles, especially in the rural context where market forces are weaker than in the urban context, national policy for electrification of transport should support them.

    Abstract [en]

    The procedure to evaluate fire safety of alternative ship design solutions, described in MSC/Circ.1002, has been found insufficient for novel and large scopes. In this paper, it is analysed with regards to function and applicability as a risk-based assessment procedure. Deficiencies are addressed based on risk assessment research and involvement in over a dozen performed assessments. Clarified are inconsistencies in the fire safety regulations, which must be considered particularly during identification of hazards. It is also suggested that affected safety functions are evaluated separately if possible and that the assessment sophistication is adapted to the scope of introduced hazards; four levels to perform parts of or the whole assessment are proposed.

    Abstract Water-repellent mortars were prepared using different hydrophobic compounds as admixtures. Calcium and zinc stearates, silane/siloxane products (as liquid solution and powder) were mixed into limestone cement mortars for obtaining in-bulk water-repellent mortars suitable for building protection and resistant to the degrading action of water. The influences of the admixtures on the hydration and structure of the designed mortars were investigated by SEM, TG–DSC, FT-IR, XRD, and isothermal calorimetry. The effectiveness of these agents against water action was evaluated by using techniques and methods such as mercury intrusion porosimetry, water absorption tests and contact angle measurements. Siloxane products conveyed good water-repellent effectiveness, without strongly influencing the setting and hydration of the binder, while the zinc stearates slowed down the hydration reactions.

    Abstract [en]

    With the worldwide construction sector being responsible for one third of carbon dioxide emissions, as well as forty percent of the world’s energy use and waste production, a shift to sustainable and renewable construction techniques is crucial. Engineered timber, a champion of sustainable construction materials, has evolved to a stage that enables the construction of not only family housing but also taller buildings so far commonly built from concrete or steel. Designing taller timber buildings made is more demanding than their concrete and steel counterparts. Whereas different design aspects (architectural, structural, fire safety, acoustics, etc.) of concrete buildings can work almost independently, the design of taller timber buildings should be performed with intensive collaboration among the design teams. It is therefore crucial to address taller multi-storey timber buildings from a collaborative and interdisciplinary perspective, considering static, dynamic, fire, acoustic, human health, and other aspects in parallel and not in isolation. Only through interdisciplinary analysis and interaction can a set of holistic design guidelines be developed that will enable the safe construction of taller timber buildings, as well as respect human wellbeing demands. In this paper, the COST Action CA20139 will be presented and the main aims will be discussed.

    | In this FRIC study, the effect of the fire mascot Bjørnis on the fire safety in Norwegian households is studied. The main conclusion is that Bjørnis has led to a clear and documentable improvement of the fire safety in Norwegian homes. This study is a part of project 4.3 Fire safety measures for dwellings in FRIC, in collaboration with the Bjørnis Foundation.     Abstract [en]

    EBOB - Solar cell installations on buildings. Fire spread and safety for fire services.

    The aim of the project has been to answer the following four research questions: 1. How do wind speed and air gap size affect the fire development in the cavity between the solar cell module and the underlying roof structure, and how do these factors affect the extent of damage to the underlying roof structure? 2. How do solar cell modules affect a fire on a realistic, Norwegian, pitched roof? 3. What work is ongoing in Europe and internationally to developing test methods for fire technical documentation of photovoltaic modules, and how should this be implemented in Norway? 4. How should fire service personnel be secured in their work when the fire includes solar cell installation? In this research question, larger installations beyond residential houses and detached houses are also relevant, including larger buildings, flat roofs and BIPV. To answer research questions 1 and 2, a total of 29 experiments were performed with fire spread in the cavity behind solar cell modules on pitched roof surfaces. The experiments were performed at RISE Fire Research's laboratory in Trondheim in 2021. This main report (RISE report 2022:82) summarizes the entire project, and additional details from the experiments performed are given in a separate technical report (RISE report 2022:83). The main findings from the experiments are that solar cell modules mounted parallel to the roof surface on pitched roofs can affect the fire dynamics of a fire on the roof surface. It was found that both the length of the damaged area on the roof and the temperature rise inwards in the roof (below the chipboard) increased when the distance between the simulated solar cell module and the roof surface decreased. Furthermore, the findings indicate that there is a relation between the size of the gap between the roof surface and the solar cell module, and how large initial fire is needed for the fire to spread. A larger distance between the roof surface and the solar module requires a larger initial fire for the fire to spread. The temperature increase inwards in the roof structure was not large enough in the experiments performed to pose a danger of immediate fire spreading inwards in the structure. Work is ongoing internationally on the development of test methods for fire technical documentation of solar cell modules. This work has so far not resulted in new standards or procedures that can be implemented in Norway. Information has been found from various guidelines and reports on what equipment and expertise the fire service needs to secure their efforts. It is important that the fire service has sufficient knowledge about the working principle of a solar cell installation, so that they understand that parts of the installation can conduct electricity, even if the switch-off switch is activated. The fire service must also be given training in how to handle a fire in a building with a solar cell installation, as well as what protective equipment and tools are needed. The answers from the various fire services to a questionnaire show that solar cell installations rarely are included in the risk and vulnerability analyses (ROS analyses). As a consequence, they do not currently have good enough training and knowledge about handling fires in buildings with solar cell installations. The questionnaire also shows that it seems somewhat unclear to the fire service what responsibility they have in the event of a fire in solar cell installations. This should be clarified, and in cases where solar cell installations pose an increased risk, the fire service must be provided with resources so that they have the right equipment, the right competence, and the right staff to handle such fires.

    Denne rapporten beskriver den eksperimentelle studien i BraTeK (Brannbeskyttende tekstiler for kulturhistoriske objekter) prosjekets del 3. Det er utviklet en metode for småskala eksponering av strålevarme etterfulgt av vanneksponering for å imitere scenarioet med en kirkebrann som inkluderer slokking med vann. Seks tekstiler er evaluert med hensyn på deres varme- og vannbeskyttende egenskaper for beskyttelse av kulturhistoriske gjenstander. Den samlede konklusjonen for hvert tekstil viser at to ble rangert som gode, tre som middels og én som dårlig. Begge tekstilene som er rangert som gode har et aluminiumslag på eksponert side. Kombinert med resultatene fra BraTeK del 1 og 2 (NIKU-rapporter), kan konklusjonene fra denne rapporten støtte eiernes valg av brannverntekstiler.

    Abstract [en]

    IVL har studerat hur luften förändras vid transport genom fyra ventilationssystem i kontors­fastigheter. De fyra fastigheterna var vanliga kontor utan påtalade innemiljöproblem. Mätningarna visade att de filter som fanns för att rena tilluften skilde av partiklar sämre än förväntat. Mätningarna visade också att det bildas irriterande ämnen vid luftens transport genom ventilations­systemet. Sannolikt bildas irriterande ämnen som organiska syror och formaldehyd genom reaktioner med vatten/fukt. Även den totala halten av kolväten ökar när luften passerar genom ventilations­systemet. Halterna av ozon, kvävedioxid och mikroorganismer minskar när luften passerar genom ventilationssystemet. Baserat på mätningarna samt tidigare studier av ventilationssystem, har IVL sammanställt rekommendationer om hur man kan undvika problem med ventilation i samband med nybyggnation av ventilation; vid underhåll av ventilation och vad man kan göra om man misstänker att ventilationen är undermålig.     Abstract [en]

    Fire safety during construction and rehabilitation of buildings. This study deals with how the covering of buildings during the construction or rehabilitation of buildings affects fire safety and to what extent the regulations take this into account. The main focus has been mapping relevant requirements, recommendations, and performances related to the covering of buildings, mapping available materials, investigating the material’s fire properties, and modelling the spread of smoke within the covering. A mapping of the relevant laws and regulations applied for constructing and rehabilitating buildings has been carried out. The mapping has shown that demands are placed on owners, users, project owners, builders, businesses, employers, planners and contractors through many different laws and regulations. The people involved can have several roles, and similar roles have different names in the various regulations. For buildings in use, fire safety must be ensured for both the users and workers. It also applies that both the owner and the users are responsible for ensuring fire safety. It requires good communication and cooperation between different actors to ensure that fire safety is maintained for all involved, during the construction and rehabilitation of buildings. When covered scaffolding is used, the Regulations concerning the performance of work, use of work equipment and related technical requirements [10] require that the covering satisfy the fire requirements for materials used in escape routes (§17-20). The guideline to the Norwegian Regulations on technical requirements for construction works, TEK10, (Veiledningen til TEK10) §11-9, provides pre-accepted performance levels. For escape routes, class B-s1,d0 (In 1) is specified for walls and ceilings. There is no requirement for fire classification of the walkways in the scaffolding under the applicable laws and regulations. We believe there should be requirements for fire classification of the walkways, in the same way as for the covering, i.e., B-s1,d0 (In 1) for surfaces on walls and ceilings and Dfl-s1 (G) for surfaces on floors. The simulations of the spread of smoke from a fire inside a building during construction or rehabilitation show that the spread of smoke is affected when the scaffolding around the building is covered. Covering around the sides leads to a greater horizontal spread of smoke in the scaffolding than without covering. When the cover also has a roof, the smoke first accumulates underneath the cover's roof before it eventually also fills up with smoke down the floors of the scaffolding. The simulations showed that establishing an open field in the upper part of the cover would ventilate the smoke gases effectively, and the spread of smoke was essentially the same as for a cover without a roof. In addition, the simulation indicated that the air flow through the walkways in the scaffold could be an important factor in reducing the covering's negative effect on the spread of smoke. Of the 64 different products used for covering found in the survey, 35% had full classification according to EN 13501-1 (such as B,s1-d0). About 6% stated that the product was not flame retardant. Of the remainder, it was evenly distributed between those who stated a fire classification according to other test methods, those who did not provide any information on the fire properties and those who stated that the product was flame retardant without further specification. The mapping also indicates that the products from market leaders used by large general contractors provide products with documented fire properties. Conversations with two of Norway’s largest fire and rescue services shed light on several challenges connected to covering scaffolding and construction during firefighting activities. They pointed out that the covering could cause challenges and delays throughout their efforts. The covering gives a reduced visual overview of the spread of smoke and the location of doors and windows. This information is important for planning both extinguishing and smoke diver efforts. In addition, the covering can be an obstacle to the actual extinguishing effort, the use of an extinguishing agent and smoke divers and rescue efforts.

The aim was to increase knowledge pertaining to the effect of critical parameters on the cracking process and how this is related to the material's macroscopic properties. A methodology based on the combination of different experimental methods and measuring techniques at different scales was developed. Crack propagation during tensile loading of small-scale specimens in a tensile stage was monitored by means of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Acoustic Emission (AE). After testing, crack patterns were studied using fluorescence microscopy.

    Abstract [en]

    In fibre reinforced concrete (FRC), understanding the underlying interaction mechanisms between discrete fibres and the surrounding concrete matrix can lead to the optimization of the fibre-matrix combination. This paper presents the initial development of a method enabling the analysis of this given interaction on ameso-mechanical level. The method is such that volume images are initially captured using X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) on small-scale FRC specimens under loading which are thereafter analysed to measure full 3D strainand deformation via Digital Volume Correlation (DVC). It is anticipated that the method developed in this project can be a useful tool for the developmentof new innovative and high performance FRC.

High-resolution volume images from the µXRT scans enable clearvisualization of aggregates, pores, the fiber and the fiber-matrix interface.Furthermore, the natural density speckle pattern from aggregate distributionand pores was found suitable for Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) analysis.From the DVC results it was possible to visualize and quantify the straindistribution in the matrix around the fiber at the different load levels up tofinal failure, being marked by either pull-out or fiber rupture. This studydemonstrates that strain measurements within the concrete matrix can beobtained successfully using µXRT imaging and DVC analysis, which leads to anincreased understanding of the interaction mechanisms in fibre reinforcedconcrete under mechanical loading.

    Fiber pull-out is generally considered to be the dominating failure mechanism in fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Accordingly, pull-out tests are typically performed to characterize the fiber-matrix interaction. However, little direct insight can be gained on the actual mechanisms ofthe pull-out from such a test. Deeper understanding could however be gained through the addition of non-destructive techniques to pull-out tests to enable the visualization and quantification of the mechanical interaction. Pull-out mechanisms for different common steel fibers were investigated using adapted pull-out tests performed in-situ in an X-ray micro tomography (µXRT). High resolution volume images from the µXRT scans enable clear visualization of aggregates, pores, fiber and fiber-matrix interface. Furthermore, the natural density speckle pattern from aggregate distribution and pores was found to be suitable for Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) analysis. From the DVC results it was possible to visualize and quantify the strain distribution in the matrix around the fiber at different load levels up to final failure, being marked by either pull-out or fiber rupture. The load transfer mechanism was initially dominated by shear along the fiber. As the load increased, slip occurred in the end-hook region and mechanical locking became the governing mechanism. This study demonstrates that strain measurements within the concrete matrix and passive end-slip can be obtained successfully using µXRT imaging and DVC analysis, which leads to an increased understanding of the interaction mechanisms in fiber reinforced concrete under mechanical loading.

    This report is a result of the SUSPIPE project. Within SUSPIPE, the water and sewage industry's manufacturers, suppliers and customers collaborate. In this sub-project, the possibilities for better products and methodology for electrofusion of large-dimension polyethylene pipes have been investigated through interviews, measurements, and simulations. When building new water and sewage pipe networks of polyethylene pipes, the network owners should demand that the work complies with “AMA Anläggning 20,” that the welders have training with an EWF certificate and that procedure testing is carried out before the construction starts. Furthermore, they should have inspectors present at the construction sites. The members of INSTA-CERT should review the certification regulations regarding requirements for ovality and indirect methods for measurements of residual internal stresses in polyethylene pipes for water and sewage. To achieve good quality joints in polyethylene pipes, rotating scraping tools, fixing tools and rounding clamps must be used. Furthermore, the trenches must be wide and long enough for fitting equipment and personnel and for adjusting the positions of the pipe ends.

    SUSPIPE Pilotprojekt 2 – Bättre anslutningar av strukturväggsrör av plast till betongbrunnar2021Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This report is a result of the SUSPIPE project. Within SUSPIPE the water and sewage industry's manufacturers, suppliers and customers collaborate. In this sub-project, solutions for connecting concrete manholes to structured wall pipes in plastic have been investigated. The project has also analysed conditions in the field, interviewed customers, contractors and inspectors and tried to understand the origin and cause of the perceived problems with leaking joints. Different types of joints between concrete manholes and plastic pipes have been identified. The new edition of “AMA Anläggning 20” requires seals to be used at the joints, but there is always some lag to implement new editions in procurements. To have consistent requirements for seals, supplementary wording from this report should be introduced in “AMA Anläggning” under PB, PC and PD. In this report, efforts have also been made to formulate requirements for materials and tightness testing, which customers can use in procurements or project instructions to improve the quality of their joints. However, further work will be required to link these to appropriate standards at the system level. The requirements for vulcanized rubber and, also thermoplastic elastomers in applicable standards need to be tightened, but this is a long-term process. A proposal from a previous project is adopted in this report, which is to perform relaxation tests for longer time periods. The report's proposal for requirements for verification of joint seals is based on product standards for concrete manholes and unpressurized plastic pipes, as well as a general standard for unpressurized piping systems. However, there is no standard or similar where these requirements can be set. Optionally, a voluntary labelling could be applied. Plastic pipes are marked in the Nordic countries with Nordic Poly Mark and for some other products, P-marking has been introduced through SP / RISE. Furthermore, the report states six success factors for water tight unpressurised piping systems, which include favourable contractor conditions, that accuracy in pipe laying is applied, that correct joint seals are used, that the supplier's instructions are followed, that on-site inspections are carried out and that leakage tests are carried out.
