    Abstract [en]

    Design of wall diaphragms has been a topic of major discussions during the development of the European timber design code, Eurocode 5. The main problem has been that wall diaphragms are fastened to the substrate in different ways in different countries and that this fact must be reflected in the code. A plastic method for design of wood frame wall diaphragms is presented which can be used in case of partially or fully anchored studs and fully anchored bottom rail. In this paper the method is applied to walls that are more than one storey high. The principles of the method are demonstrated for walls with and without openings. The possibility of using transverse walls for anchoring with respect to vertical uplift is illustated.

    In order to stabilize light-framed timber buildings against lateral loads, the diaphragm action of roofs, floors and walls is often used. This paper deals with an elastic analysis model for fully anchored sheathed wood frame shear walls. The model is based on the assumption of a linear elastic load-slip relation for the sheathing-to-framing joints. Only static loads are considered. The basic structural behaviour and assumptions for the elastic model are elucidated. Formulas for the load-bearing capacity and the deformation of the shear walls in the ultimate and serviceability limit states, respectively, are derived. Both a discrete point description and a continuous flow per unit length modelling of the fasteners are discussed. Also, the forces and displacements of the fasteners and sheathing are derived. The effect of different patterns and spacing of the fasteners on the capacity and displacement of the wall is illustrated. The influence of flexible framing members and shear deformations in the sheets, and also the effect of vertical loads on the shear wall, both with respect to tilting and second order effects, on the horizontal load-bearing capacity and displacement are evaluated. The stress distribution and the reaction forces at the ends of the different framing members are derived. The elastic model is experimentally verified and an illustrative example is given.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this paper is to clarify the difference between two analytical models for plastic design of shear walls and evaluate their potential for hand calculation by comparing calculated load-bearing capacities of different wall configurations with the corresponding ones obtained by finite element analyses. The first analytical model is based on a true plastic lower bound concept, i.e. always fulfilling the conditions of equilibrium. The second model is based on the assumption that the full vertical shear capacity of the wall is utilized, considering that the vertical equilibrium is always fulfilled but disregarding that the horizontal equilibrium of the wall is not always satisfied. If the shear capacity of the stud-to-rail joints is sufficiently large, then the second model is also a true plastic lower bound method. The ratios between the calculated load-carrying capacities of the two analytical models are in the range between 1.00 - 1.24 with a mean value of 1.12 for the wall and load configurations studied. Results from FE simulations show that the first analytical method underestimates the load-carrying capacity by about 10 %, but that the method gives very stable capacity values relative to the FE simulations. It is further evident that there is a good agreement between the second analytical model and the results of the FE calculations at the mean level, but that this method has a considerably higher variation in the capacity values relative to the FE-simulations. Performed tests of different wall and load configurations show about 30 % higher measured capacities than calculated ones. The large deviations arc mainly due to differences in the manufacturing of the specimens for the sheathing-to-framing joint tests and the specimens for the wall tests.

    Abstract [en]

    The effectiveness of acetylation as a method to increase the durability of wood has been demonstrated in several studies over the last sixty years, starting with pioneers like Tarkow, Stamm and Goldstein. Nevertheless, as acetylated wood has now reached large scale production, the importance of long term-field test data on the performance of acetylated wood has increased. Firstly, this paper will address a project started in 1991, where acetylated Scots pine is tested in a full EN 252 test. The test is still running in Nordic NWPC test fields, Simlångsdalen in Sweden and in Viikki, Finland. The results show that irrespectively of test field, pine wood test stakes with an acetylation level of about 22% (expressed as acetyl content) were as durable as the CCA treated wood at a high retention level (10.3 kg/m3) after 15 years in ground contact. Secondly, acetylated wood (acetyl content 22%) is also being evaluated under marine conditions in Kristineberg on the Swedish west coast, according to EN 275 (marine borer resistance). The test has been running since 1999 and the X-ray rating shows a slight attack by marine borers after eight years in test, whereas the untreated controls failed after only one year. If the acetylation (acetyl content 21%) is followed by a post treatment with melamine resin (weight gain 19%) no attack could be observed after eight years. Thirdly, coated acetylated pine panels were exposed on rigs 45º facing south for 13 years, according to an early version of EN 927-3 in Ultuna and Malmö. The results indicate that acetylated wood in combination with a proper coating system, gives a considerably longer service life of the panels as compared to coated unmodified panels.
