    Abstract [sv]

    Trä är ett material som passar i många utomhusmiljöer. Rätt utförda träkonstruktioner får lång livslängd och litet underhållsbehov. Den här handboken innehåller anvisningar för utformning av hållbara träbalkonger. Den baseras på befintlig kunskap när det gäller material, behandlingar och konstruktioner. Konstruktionslösningar med både öppna träbalkonger och inglasningar ingår. Målgruppen för handboken är konstruktörer, arkitekter och andra yrkesverksamma som arbetar med att utforma hållbara och funktionella konstruktioner av trä. Handboken är utgiven av SP Trä och har finansierats av Formas (Forskningsrådet för miljö, areella näringar och samhällsbyggande och TCN (TräCentrum Norr). Formas har finansierat handboken som ett informationsprojekt med syfte att föra ut kunskap från forskning inom Formas ansvarsområden. TCN är en centrumbildning vid Luleå tekniska universitet som finansieras av de deltagande träindustrierna i Norr- och Västerbotten tillsammans med medel från EU Mål 1 och Länsstyrelserna i Västerbottens och Norrbottens län.

    Fungal cellulases have been shown to be less efficient in modified wood than in untreated wood (Lekounogou et al. 2008; Vena°s 2008). However, Verma and Mai (2010) showed that cellulase efficacy is partly restored in 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) treated wood by pre-treatment with Fenton's reagent, simulating the oxidative degradation phase in initial brown rot decay. In this study, we examined whether Fenton derived hydroxyl radicals (OH) and cellulases are able to cleave polysaccharides in furfurylated and acetylated wood and to what extent enzyme efficacy is increased by oxidative pre-treatment of these materials. The results show that fungal cellulases were able to degrade acetylated wood and that the cellulase efficacy was increased by oxidative pre-treatment by 20%, which is half of the increase in untreated wood. Furthermore, the results indicate that poly(furfuryl alcohol) is degraded by Fenton derived OH. This indicates a possible route for the eventual degradation of modified wood.

    Abstract [en]

    The present study describes the use of an epoxy functional fatty acid, 9,10-epoxy-18-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (EFA), extracted from birch (Betula pendula) outer bark to produce thermosets. The purified epoxy fatty acid was polymerized by enzyme-catalyzed polycondensation utilizing Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB) to form oligomers with targeted degrees of polymerization (DP) of 3, 6, and 9 and obtained DPs of 2.3, 5.9 and 7.3, respectively. It was determined that it is possible to first enzymatically polymerize and aliphatically endcap the epoxy functional fatty acid resulting in controlled oligomer lengths while also maintaining the epoxy functionality for further reaction by main-chain homo-epoxy cationic photopolymerization. The enzymatic polymerized oligomers were characterized in terms of conversion of the residual epoxy groups (FT-IR), the thermal properties (DSC, TGA) and the purity by MALDI-TOF and 1H-NMR. The amorphous thermoset films with varying degrees of crosslinking resulting from the cationically photopolymerized oligomers, were characterized in terms of their thermal properties and residual epoxy content (FT-IR ATR). The crosslinked polyesters formed insoluble, amorphous, and transparent films. This work demonstrates that thermoset films with designed properties can be effectively made with the use of forest products to reduce the petroleumbased plastics market.

    The load resistance of timber members exposed to fire is determined from the uncharred residual cross section. Owing to elevated temperatures in parts of the residual cross section, the strength and stiffness properties are lower than under normal conditions. The effective residual cross-section model provides a simplified user -friendly design concept to account for the reduced properties of timber exposed to fire. A fictitious zero-strength layer is removed from the residual cross section obtained after removal of the char layer, and the remaining cross section is assumed to have normal strength and stiffness properties. The method is implemented in Eurocode 5 as the reduced cross-section method. This paper deals with the background of this method, originally developed for rectangular cross sections of glued laminated timber, and shows extensions to other types of cross sections such as solid timber frame members and I-joists. While the thickness of the zero-strength layer was originally given as 7,6 mm, the results of simulations presented here show that the thickness of the zero-strength layer depends on a number of parameters, such as the dimensions and geometry of the cross section, the stress conditions (compression or tension) of the fire-expose d side(s), the load ratio and the duration of fire exposure. It is concluded that the assumption of a fixed value of 7,6 mm is often non-conservative.

    Abstract [en]

    Biological durability is an important feature for wood-plastic composites (WPC) intended for outdoor applications. One route to achieving WPC products with increased biological durabilityis to use wood preservative agents in the formulation of the WPC. Another option could be to use a chemically modified wood component that already exhibits increased resistance to biologicaldegradation. There is also a need to use biobased thermoplastics made from renewable resources, which would decrease the dependency on petrochemically-produced thermoplastics in the future. The objective of this study was to examine moisture sorption properties, biological durability, and mechanical performance of injection-molded WPC samples based on acetylated or thermally modified wood components and a polylactate matrix. The biological durability was evaluated in a terrestrial microcosm (TMC) test according to ENV 807, followed by mechanical evaluation in a center point bending test. The moisture sorption properties were investigated via both water soaking and exposure in a high-humidity climate. Low or negligible mass losses were observed in the TMC test for all WPC samples. However, the mechanical evaluation after exposure in the TMC test showed 35-40% losses in both strength and stiffness for the WPC containing an unmodified wood component.

    Moisture sorption in wood-plastic composites (WPCs) affects their durability and dimensional stability. In certain outdoor exposures, the moisture properties of WPCs are altered due to e.g. cracks induced by swelling and shrinkage of the components, as well as UV degradation or biological attack. The aim of this work was to study the effect of different artificial ageing routes on the moisture sorption properties of WPCs. Extruded WPCs were prepared with either unmodified or acetylated wood and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The WPC samples were artificially aged involving water soaking, artificial weathering, and white- or brown-rot decay in different combinations. After the ageing, the samples were conditioned in either 65% or 90% relative humidity (RH) until equilibrium moisture content was reached. A dynamic moisture sorption analyzer was used to monitor the sorption rate of samples subjected to a climate change from 65% to 90% RH. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the surface morphology of the aged composites. Results showed that the artificial weathering caused cracking of the HDPE matrix at the compositesurface, as well as a wood-matrix debonding, resulting in an increased moisture sorption rate. The WPC samples subjected to white-rot decay showed the highest moisture sorption rate.

    Long term in-situ measurements of displacement, temperature and relative humidity in a multi-storey residential CLT building2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    In a multi-storey residential housing project comprising of four 8-storey timber buildings, the bottom storey being designed with concrete and storeys 2-8 in timber, the vertical relative displacement, the temperature and the relative humidity (RH) have been monitored. Displacement measurements started during construction and presented herein are results of 6.5 years of in-situ measurements. Temperature and relative humidity measurements have been ongoing for about 5.5 years. The temperature and RH measurements were performed at six different locations in the building, at each location in eight positions through the exterior wall with a sampling frequency of 1 measurement every 15 minutes. The results show that the total vertical displacement over six storeys after 6.5 years of service life is approximately 23 mm as a yearly average, and over the year the displacement varies from this value by approximately ±2 mm. The main cause for the relative displacement is the decrease of moisture content in the wood material leading to shrinkage after completion of the building. The results obtained show also that the exterior wall design of the building behaves well in terms of not comprising a general risk for damp or mould in the timber core of the external walls.

    Unseasoned (green) spruce timber side boards of size 25 × 120 × 600 mm were flatwiseglued with a one-component PUR adhesive. Glued pairs of boards were then kiln-dried to 12 % moisture content. A special small-scale specimen for testing the fracture properties of the adhesive bond in Mode I was developed in order to evaluate the adhesive bond properties. The complete force versus deformation curve, including both the ascending and the descending parts, could be obtained with these small-scale specimens, enabling the strength and fracture energy of the bond line to be calculated. In addition, the fractured specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. Results show that both the tensile strength and the fracture energy of the green glued PUR adhesive bonds were equal to those of the dry glued bonds. The methodology developed and used in the present study gives new possibilities for analysis of the mechanical behaviour of wood adhesive bonds, and particularly of their brittleness and its correlation with the type of fracture path. This is in sharp contrast to the use of standardised test methods (e.g. EN 302, ASTM D905) with specimens having relatively large glued areas. Using such types of specimens, it is not possible to obtain the complete force versus deformation response of the bond. In addition, when using such test methods, failure takes place in the wood or in the fibres near the bond, thus making it impossible to obtain detailed information about the bond line characteristics.
