    Abstract [en]

    The 12th comparison between the Swedish National Platinum-Iridium kilogram (Proto¬type number 40) and the principal kilogram standards for mass has been performed at SP Swedish National Testing and Research Institute. The method used was a weighted least square method with restraint developed by Dr Leslie Pendrill < >. Weighings for the pan-European key intercomparisons for 1 kg, EUROMET 509 and 510 were made together with the regular kilogram comparison.

    Determination of the magnetic properties of mass standards.2004Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Magnetic forces can adversely affect weighings since, without systematic investigation, these spurious forces cannot be distinguished from the gravitational forces to be compared in the determination of mass. Magnetic forces can result from the mutual interaction of two mass standards as well as between a mass standard and the mass comparator being used for the weighing. Magnetic forces arise in the influence of a magnetic field gradient on a mass standard possessing a magnetic dipole moment; the latter may either exist permanently or may be induced by the applied magnetic field. This report summarises the effects of magnetism in weighing and methods developed to determine the magnetic properties of mass standard and comparator.

    Abstract [en]

    SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden has previously presented results with a two color one-way method. This method is an alternative method to two-way time and frequency transfer that is useful if there are unknown asymmetries in the connection. The method is possible to use in existing infrastructure and is able to coexist with data channels for example in WDM systems, which make it possible to broadcast to multiple users and enables the user to be anonymous to the time or frequency transfer. This paper will present the results from the analysis when implementing the technique in an urban commercial optical fiber data communication WDM network between two clock labs in Sweden connecting two cesium clocks to each other for frequency comparison. The evaluation is performed with two wavelengths 8 nm apart on 6 km of installed fiber in an urban city network. The transmitter and the receiver are installed in an electromagnetically shielded room several meters below ground, and the fiber runs to a building at a distance of 3 km, and then back again. The comparison will be within the laboratory, eliminating any errors from a reference system. Results and conclusion from this evaluation reveals the propagation delay variations in the propagation distance and will display the need of compensation for these variations.

    Abstract [en]

    Real Time Kinematic (RTK) is a system that utilises Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to provide accurate positioning in real time. The contribution of the troposphere, the ionosphere and local effects, such as receiver noise and multipath are the most significant error sources affecting network RTK measurements We show how measurements with network RTK are affected by these different error sources under varying circumstances such as time of year or time of the day, network infrastructure, satellite systems and processing techniques We find that, for Scandinavian conditions, the effect of the ionospheric spatial variability on network RTK measurements is greater during nighttime than during daytime. The effect is also largest in the months October and November and smallest in the months of June and July. A densification of the reference network from 70 km to 35 km between the reference stations results in improved measurements. The error in the measured vertical position coordinate is reduced from 26 mm to 17 mm. The access to new GNSS reduces error in the measured vertical position coordinate from 26 to 21 mm. By using the L3-combination, the contribution from the ionosphere is reduced to virtually zero. However, this has been at the expense of the local errors

    The project suggests appropriate methods for quality assurance of measurement processes and measuring equipment used for condition monitoring of power transformers, specifically for selection of on-line monitoring systems for: • Temperature • Partial discharge (PD) • Sound and vibration The developed methods can be developed further in subsequent projects to cover the quality of other types of measurement processes and measuring equipment as part of maintenance planning activities.

    Abstract [en]

    SP has experience in the field of fiberoptic communication and expertise in research in the field. Also, SP has expertise in the high-voltage field and there is currently a large interest in developing the high-voltage network in order to accommodate new small producers of electric power (wind mills, solar power, etc.) In this report we describe efforts to find areas of interest to develop fiberoptic sensors for offshore monitoring of high-voltage equipment. A large number of research papers and review articles have been collected and reviewed in order to investigate what possibilities are at hand for SP to provide support for development of new or existing fiberoptic sensor technologies.

    Controlling thermal power in the feed water line of a power plant presupposes both accurate flow and temperature measurement. In this application the temperature measurement is usually a single Pt-100. This results in a measurement error of several kelvin. In this study we have investigated two different sensors based on the speed of sound (SoS) in the flowing medium for measuring the average temperature across a flow pipe cross-section. This is a task within the on-going European research project called ENG-06. The two SoS-based temperature measuring sensors were investigated under laboratory conditions. Investigations were done using both homogenous and non-homogenous temperature distributions with temperature differences up to 25 K. In addition the influence of pressure (50-200 kPa) and flow rates (0.5-2 m/s) on the SoS devices were also investigated. Our results show that the SoS-based temperature principle is working. Furthermore, depending on the measurement conditions a SoS temperature measurement device significantly can reduce the deviation to the reference sensor compared with a single Pt-100 sensor. Relative reductions in the deviation to the reference of 20-85 % were possible to achieve. This opens for the possibility of increasing the energy efficiency in power plants as aimed for in the ENG-06 project.

    Accurate temperature measurements in flow lines are critical for many industrial processes. It is normally more a rule than an exception in such applications to obtain water flows with inhomogeneous temperature distributions. In this paper, a number of comparisons were performed between different 100 ohm platinum resistance thermometer (Pt-100) configurations and a new speed-of-sound-based temperature sensor used to measure the average temperature of water flows with inhomogeneous temperature distributions. The aim was to achieve measurement deviations lower than 1 K for the temperature measurement of water flows with inhomogeneous temperature distributions. By using a custom-built flow injector, a water flow with a hot-water layer on top of a cold-water layer was created. The temperature difference between the two layers was up to 32 K. This study shows that the deviations to the temperature reference for the average temperature of four Pt-100s, the multisensor consisting of nine Pt-100s, and the new speed-of-sound sensors are remarkably lower than the deviation for a single Pt-100 under the same conditions. The aim of reaching a deviation lower than 1 K was achieved with the speed-of-sound sensors, the configuration with four Pt-100s, and the multisensor. The promising results from the speed-of sound temperature sensors open the possibility for an integrated flow and temperature sensor. In addition, the immersion depth of a single Pt-100 was also investigated at three different water temperatures.

    An HVDC reference voltage divider has been designed for high accuracy and wide-band measurements up to 1000 kV. To maintain wide-band characteristics, field distribution must be optimized in order to minimize the response time of the divider. To compensate the stray capacitance, a capacitive path that surrounds the resistive reference divider is added to function as a shield. Optimal capacitance values producing a matched distribution are obtained using 3D FEM simulations. Factors affecting the performance of the divider are assessed by simulating multiple scenarios representing different practical considerations in real-life applications.

    Josephson voltage standards are well established for use at dc and low-frequency ac voltages. The increasing demand i) to provide traceability for arbitrary waveforms, ii) to extend the range of use to higher frequencies, and iii) to improve the accuracy is being addressed in the project Q-WAVE, which is jointly funded by the European Union and the participating countries within the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). Here, sampling measurements and procedures using binary-divided 1 V and 10 V arrays are investigated. In addition, a quantum-based analogue-to-digital converter for direct measurements of arbitrary waveforms is under development. It will contain several Josephson arrays in series biased by a pulse drive based on opto-electronics, in order to increase the output voltage.
