Fire retardant treated wood products – Properties and uses2016In: Proceedings of the International Research Group Annual Meeting 2016, 2016, article id 16-30701Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Wood is combustible, but can still perform very well in fire, especially for load bearing structures. However, visible wood surface may not fulfil the fire requirements in building codes and fire retardant treatments may be an option. The highest reaction to fire classification for combustible products may then be reached. However, the excellent fire performance of the virgin fire retardant treated, FRT, wood products may degrade over time, especially in outdoor applications. Two cases of long term durability of FRT wood products exist and standard procedures are available for limited hygroscopicity and maintained fire performance after weathering. Structural degradation may also occur, but is relevant only for load-bearing uses. Recommendations on end uses and suggestions for further research are included.

Fire scenarios for multi-storey façades with emphasis on full-scale testing of wooden façades2015In: Fire technology, ISSN 0015-2684, E-ISSN 1572-8099, Vol. 51, no 6, p. 1495-1510Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper briefly reviews the main fire scenarios for exterior façade claddings on multi-storey buildings, together with available full-scale test procedures and performance requirements in different countries. It is obvious that there is no international agreement or approach on how to evaluate the fire safety of façade claddings. Two series of full-scale fire tests of wooden façades, in accordance with the Swedish SP Fire 105 test, are presented: one series for different proportions of untreated wood (partial wood and structural fire protection with a fire shield above the window), and another series for fire-retardant-treated wood. The results are compared with data from the intermediate scale Single Burning Item test and the small scale cone calorimeter test. A main conclusion is that SP Fire 105 is a useful tool to evaluate the fire behaviour of façade claddings, but it should be complemented with more objective measurements. Claddings with partial wood and the use of a fire shield above the window fulfil the requirements. Wood claddings treated with fire retardants (FR) may fulfil the requirements, if the amount of FR is high enough. It is also essential to demonstrate the weather durability of the FR treatment. Good agreement has been found with the other test methods used. The need to use fire stops behind multi-storey façade claddings to avoid the spread of fire in cavities is underlined.

Innovative eco-efficient high fire performance wood products for demanding applications Final report for Vinnova-Tekes project InnoFireWood2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The basis for a new generation of innovative wood products has been developed in the InnoFireWood project. The main characteristics of such products are substantial improvements in fire performance with maintained eco-efficiency, durability, and other properties of the original wood product. Industrial relevance, sustainable production, and end-use applications were in main focus. This type of products will increase the competitiveness of wood products in relation to other building products. A new Nordic system with classes for the Durability of the Reaction to Fire performance (DRF classes) at interior and exterior building applications has been implemented in order to assess the overall sustainable performance of the new products. The project was conducted in close co-operation between Sweden and Finland. In addition to research institutes, industry was represented by several companies producing wood products or fire retardants.

Dendritic structures based on bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as platforms for surface reactions2005In: Langmuir, ISSN 0743-7463, E-ISSN 1520-5827, Vol. 21, p. 4512-4519Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present results related to the self-assembly of different generations of disulphide-cored 2,2-bis-(methylol)propionic acid-based dendritic structures onto gold surfaces. These molecular architectures, ranging from generation 1 (G#1) to generation 3 (G#3), contain removable acetonide protecting groups at their periphery that are accessible for hydrolysis with subsequent formation of OH-terminated surface-attached dendrons. The deprotection has been investigated in detail as a versatile approach to accomplish reactive surface platforms. A special focus has been devoted to the comparison of the properties of the layers formed by hydrolysis of the acetonide moieties directly on the surface and in solution, prior to the layer formation.

IMPROVER D2.2 Report of criteria for evaluating resilience2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the recent years, the focus has moved from critical infrastructure protection to that of resilience. But how do we know whether a critical infrastructure is resilient or not, how can it be evaluated, measured and enhanced?

Drawing on, combining and developing the ideas of the existing literature and practices, the current report develops a holistic, easy-to-use and computable methodology to evaluate critical infrastructure resilience, called Critical Infrastructure Resilience Index (CIRI). The methodology is applicable to all types of critical infrastructure, including a possibility to tailor it to the specific needs of different sectors, facilities and hazard scenarios. The proposed methodology is especially suitable for organizational and technological resilience evaluation, but permits including also elements of societal resilience indicators to the evaluations.

The methodology is based on four levels of hierarchically organized indicators. Level 1 consists of the phases well known from the so-called crisis management cycle. Under these phases, we find sets of Level 2 rather generic indicators. Thus under level 1 ‘Prevention’, for instance, we may find a Level 2 indicator such as ‘Resilient design’, further divided into Level 3 more detailed indicators such as ‘Physical robustness’, ‘Cyber robustness’, ‘Redundancy’, ‘Modularity’, and ‘Independency’. The task is to study these indicators on Level 4 in the context of concrete critical infrastructure facilities and hazard scenarios, that is, applying Level 3 indicators into concrete circumstances.

The methodology then permits to transfer quantitative, semi-quantitative and qualitative evaluations of individual sector-specific resilience indicators into uniform metrics, based on process maturity levels. This in turn makes it possible to give a specific critical infrastructure, or its part, a resilience value on the scale 0-5.

While the real resilience value becomes clear only when one engages in the analysis of several indicators, the methodology can be used also as a step-by-step measurement and development tool for resilience, without necessary immediately engaging in time-consuming total resilience analysis.

The user of this methodology is supposed to be the operator of critical infrastructure, or part of it, in the spirit of self-auditing. In case it would be implemented in a wider scale, in cooperation between the operators and authorities, it would give the authorities a holistic picture about the respective society’s critical infrastructure resilience.

In this report, we draw a concise picture of the methodology and illustrate how this methodology could be applied to a specific infrastructure and hazard scenario.
