    Abstract [en]

    Reverberation chambers (RC) are widely used for measuring antenna performance and parameters for MIMO systems. RCs for mobile phone antenna tests are often specially designed for this purpose. The lowest frequency of operation of an RC is decided by its size. With a trend of lower frequency bands being allocated for mobile phones, the minimum size of RCs for mobile phone antenna tests increases, and is approaching the size of a normal room. At the same time, many large shielded rooms are already in use for various electrical measurements. In this paper, a standard shielded room designed for EMC testing is used as an RC for mobile phone antenna tests. To complete the RC, a large mode stirrer is built. The fact that the room is also used for other tests requires a detachable, foldable, and lightweight stirrer design. Therefore, metal meshes are evaluated for the design of the mode stirrer. The performance of the used room is verified by standard tests for RCs, and it is verified that it is possible to measure antennas from about 400 MHz up to 4 GHz with good accuracy. The size of the room also enables measurements including humans carrying mobile phones or body area networks.

    Design Rules for Multipath Simulator Antenna Array2010Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Multipath simulators are a technique for characterizing wireless terminals, such as for instance mobile phones. A multipath simulator distributes the measurement signal over an array of antennas encircling the test object. When building a multipath simulator, the antenna array should be given an optimal design with respect to the characteristics of the test objects, the parameters to be measured, and the desired measurement accuracy. This report presents mathematical relations which can be used for optimizing the antenna array. The relations are mostly derived theoretically using simple assumptions, and in some instances found from numerical simulations. The report assumes an array with the antennas evenly distributed on a circle with the test object at the center, and a measurement signal power which is uniformly distributed over the array. Considered measured quantities include power, correlation coefficient, and the statistical distribution of amplitudes.

    Many road vehicles are today equipped with 77-GHz radar systems for improved road safety. Some objects on the roads, e.g., pedestrians, give a poor reflection of the radar signal. Two applications are studied in this letter: jackets with the reflectors integrated in the lining, and plastic side screens of the type used at road work. A special type of radar reflector is designed, which would be suitable for these applications. The reflector used is a thin and flexible retrodirective microstrip patch antenna array. Panels of suitable size containing a number of these reflectors can be applied to the jacket and the side screen. The improvement in radar cross section is measured. Various design aspects of the chosen reflector, and a comparison to alternative techniques, are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    Statistical uncertainties involved in the evaluation of ergodic MIMO capacity and diversity gain in a fading environment is investigated. The study is based on results from a numerical simulation tool called "Rayleigh-Lab. " This tool can be used for accuracy investigation of MIMO capacity and diversity gain, and to determine the number of independent samples needed to estimate them with a reasonable level of confidence. The MIMO capacity is evaluated using Shannon's channel capacity formula. Two different methods of evaluating diversity gains are compared: based on CDF curves, and based on estimating correlation and radiation efficiency and then using them in a newly available compact formula for calculating the diversity gain. Rayleigh-Lab emulates Rayleigh channels by generating sequences of random complex numbers and it provides a convenient graphical user-interface for a pedagogical study of average power level (proportional to antenna efficiency), correlation, diversity gain and maximum available capacity.

    Abstract [en]

    We present an electromagnetic simulation of a practical mobile terminal with a two-port MIMO antenna on left and right sides of the head. The computed far-field patterns include the effect of head and hand phantoms. We show that the far-field patterns on the two sides are strongly correlated if they are presented in the coordinate system of the phone, but they are completely uncorrelated in the coordinate system of the environment.

    The paper studies the over-the-air (OTA) performance of a mobile terminal. A practical two-port mobile terminal model on the left side and the right side of the head for both standard cheek position and standard tilt position is used to study the diversity gains. The diversity gain has been determined by measurements in a reverberation chamber as well as by simulations using the far field patterns from CST Microwave Studio, and then exposing these patterns to rich isotropic multipath (RIMP) environment in a ray-based simulation tool.

    This paper presents results from field measurements on a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system based on IEEE 802.11p. During the measurements the vehicles were moving and there were also moving obstacles located between the transmitting and receiving nodes creating a Non-Line-of-Sight environment. Distance, speed and type of obstacles were varied during the measurements. Both a highway and suburban environment was tested. The tests were focused on packet error rate and consecutive packet loss. The results of the measurements are compared with the communication requirements of a vehicle platooning application which is a novel intelligent transport system application. It implies multiple vehicles tightly following each other in a row. Performance of the application degrades with consecutive packet loss. It is shown that the platooning application is not adequately supported in all measurement scenarios.

    Abstract [en]

    We present a method for repeatable measurements of antennas integrated on vehicles in vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The method can handle vehicles and heavy vehicles and results in distance dependent radiation pattern measurements, or near-field coverage measurements.     Abstract [en]

    In this letter, over-the-air (OTA) tests of the performance of the IEEE 802.11p radio system are performed in a reverberation chamber (RC) that is equipped with a fast rotating mode stirrer. By varying the speed of the mode stirrer, different levels of Doppler spreads are created, and the 802.11p radio system is tested accordingly. As expected, the Doppler spread affects the package error rate (PER) of the radio system adversely. In addition to measurements, a simple PER model is presented, which sheds some light into the OTA tests.
