    Sverige har alltid hållit sig långt framme när det gäller järn och stålhantering. Kunskaper som har införskaffats inom bruken och senare stålverken har kommit stålgjuterierna till gagn. Rapporten beskriver några områden där kunskap har överförts och ger en överblick av de utmaningar som stålgjuteribranschen står över för. Rapporten är en litteraturstudie där följande frågor har behandlats: Kompentensförsörjning, minskad energiförbrukning, minskning/eliminering av CO2-utsläpp, förändrade materialegenskaper och framtida råvaruresurser.

    Abstract [sv]

    Denna rapport är en kompletering till det examensarbetet som genomfördes under 2011 vid Swerea Swecast med studenter från Jönköpings Tekniska Högskola, avdelningen för Maskinteknik, Christian Liliegård och Per Söderlind. Arbetet är gjort inom ramen för projektet IPK 214 Värmeledning i sandform. I projektet har simulering och gjutförsök gjorts med en cylinder Ø100 x 350 mm gjuten i EN 43100 i en furanbunden sandform. Resultaten påvisar svårigheten att simulera rätt första gången vid gjutning i ett kapilärt poröst system i form av en sandform. Det går dock att variera flera parametrar i databasen hos NovaFlow&Solid för flödes- och stelnings-simuleing och uppnå ett resultat som är tillfredsställande. I denna rapport har det latenta värmet varierats för att uppnå en temperaturkurva så lik den verkliga som möjligt. Jämförelse har gjorts mellan standardinställningar och justerade inställningar. En Ökning av det latenta värmet från 339 kJ/kg till 500 kJ7Kg flyttade temperaturkurvorna åt höger i diagrammet till en nästan fullständig matchning. Sugningsbilden med standardinställningar stämde inte överens med verkligt utfall varför ett stort antal stelningssimuleringar genomfördes för att visa hur olika parametrar påverkar var sugningsbilden hamnar.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall aim of the pilot study is to develop a new, circular concept where complex cast components with retained high added value can be remanufactured in many cycles through dual recasting of functional layers.

    A circular business model according to this concept will lead to decreased use of material and energy within the foundry, and increased lifetime and reduced energy consumption in the end-

    user’s applications. With remanufacturing through dual recasting and its advantages, the component’s performance and economical sustainability will be optimised by using the right material at the right place. In the long run, this concept will form an integrated part in a new service business model for remanufactured cast components. This will lead to an increased use of cast components in complex applications as well as optimised resource efficiency throughout the value chain.

    This concept is yet untested, and the aim of the pilot study is therefore to answer two fundamental questions: whether the full concept can be implemented with the use of existing technology or if new technical solutions must be developed; and if the concept will be long term economically and environmentally sustainable for a selection of chosen products. Two foundries and one supplier of plants for pulp and paper industry will take part in the project. The companies will be able to try out a completely new product concept with large potential for future growth.

    Abstract [en]

    Specific heat capacity (Cp), density (ρ), and thermal conductivity (λ) of phenolic-bonded 3D-printed sand (3DPS) molds have been determined in the temperature range of 20–1400 °C using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dilatometer, and hot wire method. The results have been used to simulate the thermal gradient in a sand mold during casting aluminum using a commercial simulation software. The simulated results have been compared with laboratory-measured results and simulated results using the software’s database for conventional mold making. Our results show that available database for sand thermal properties cannot explain the thermal gradient in 3DPS molds and this manufacturing process affects the thermal properties of the mold compared to traditional mold making. It is necessary to collect data for a variety of 3D-printed sand molds to ensure accurate modeling simulation in the foundry industry. © 2021, The Author(s).

    Thin Walled Investment Castings2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This review is presented as a part of the literature review performed in the Clean Sky project LEAN - Development of light-weight steel castings for efficient aircraft engines, coordinated by Swerea SWECAST during 2011-2013. From a foundryman’s point of view, fluidity is related to the ability for a metal to fill a mould while fluidity is related to viscosity in physics. A distinction is made between flowability and fillability depending on which mechanism is reducing the ability to flow. Fillability is related to flow problems when surface tension is the governing mechanism and flowability is related to heat transfer. The influence of surface tension will be more important as the thickness of the casting is decreased whereas heat transfer has a more pronounced influence on thicker sections, but still thin. Several parameters related to both the process and alloy affect the ability to fill a thin section. Increasing super heat, mould temperature or pressure head will improve fluidity. Changes in alloy composition will also to some extent have impact on fluidity. Flow rate and shell permeability is also important parameters. There are also other possibilities that can improve fluidity. Vacuum-assisted casting is one method which has been proven effective. This method is used both for gravity and counter gravity casting. Vibrating is yet an other method which improves fluidity.
