Review of methodological choices in LCA of biorefinery systems - key issues and recommendations2015In: Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, ISSN 1932-104X, E-ISSN 1932-1031, Vol. 9, no 5, p. 606-619Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The current trend in biomass conversion technologies is toward more efficient utilization of biomass feedstock in multiproduct biorefineries. Many life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies of biorefinery systems have been performed but differ in how they use the LCA methodology. Based on a review of existing LCA standards and guidelines, this paper provides recommendations on how to handle key methodological issues when performing LCA studies of biorefinery systems. Six key issues were identified: (i) goal definition, (ii) functional unit, (iii) allocation of biorefinery outputs, (iv) allocation of biomass feedstock, (v) land use, and (vi) biogenic carbon and timing of emissions. Many of the standards and guidelines reviewed here provide only general methodological recommendations. Some make more specific methodological recommendations, but these often differ between standards. In this paper we present some clarifications (e.g. examples of research questions and suitable functional units) and methodological recommendations (e.g. on allocation).

Sulfur recirculation for increased electricity production in Waste-to-Energy plants2014In: Waste Management, ISSN 0956-053X, E-ISSN 1879-2456, Vol. 34, no 1, p. 67-78Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sulfur recirculation is a new technology for reducing boiler corrosion and dioxin formation. It was demonstrated in full-scale tests at a Waste to Energy plant in Göteborg (Sweden) during nearly two months of operation. Sulfur was recirculated as sulfuric acid from the flue gas cleaning back to the boiler, thus creating a sulfur loop. The new technology was evaluated by extensive measurement campaigns during operation under normal conditions (reference case) and operation with sulfur recirculation. The chlorine content of both fly ash and boiler ash decreased and the sulfur content increased during the sulfur recirculation tests. The deposit growth and the particle concentration decreased with sulfur recirculation and the dioxin concentration (I-TEQ) of the flue gas was reduced by approximately 25%. Sulfuric acid dew point measurements showed that the sulfuric acid dosage did not lead to elevated SO3 concentrations, which may otherwise induce low temperature corrosion. In the sulfur recirculation corrosion probe exposures, the corrosion rate decreased for all tested materials (16Mo3, Sanicro 28 and Inconel 625) and material temperatures (450. °C and 525. °C) compared to the reference exposure. The corrosion rates were reduced by 60-90%. Sulfur recirculation prevented the formation of transition metal chlorides at the metal/oxide interface, formation of chromate and reduced the presence of zinc in the corrosion products. Furthermore, measured corrosion rates at 525. °C with sulfur recirculation in operation were similar or lower compared to those measured at 450. °C material temperature in reference conditions, which corresponds to normal operation at normal steam temperatures. This implies that sulfur recirculation allows for higher steam data and electricity production without increasing corrosion.

    Abstract [en]

Development of methodology for verification of the durability of systems for airtightness, stage 1 - extension

This is a project that is intended to treat durability of airtightness systems for buildings with typically related details, such as foil, tape, prefabricated penetrations, etc.

This stage of the project has included the development, design and construction of prototype equipment. This is so that dimensioning, heating method, the level of dynamic loading, etc. could be selected and tested. Some shorter pilot tests of dimensions stability have been performed and testing methodology has been documented.

The test method has worked excellent in pilot tests. You see a change in air permeability in the measurement before and after the heat treatment. The test method is very accurate and sensitive so that the change in airtightness can be recorded.

The test method should be a very good tool for producers of airtightness systems for product development. The method is also suitable for use in the evaluation of airtightness systems for different methods of approval and certification.

All tested airtightness systems were very airtight before heat treatment. All systems show the results for 0.1 l/(s∙m2). However, after the heat treatment all the tested airtightness systems displayed an increase in air permeability in varying degrees.

In the extended project, installation of airtightness systems was made in environments that have chosen to mimic realistic constructions on site conditions. All the investigated airtightness systems show changes in air density when the assembly had taken place in cold and humid environments and when installed in a dusty environment. The variation between the different systems, however, is quite large.

Förkommersiell innovationsupphandling av kvicksilverfri COD-analys2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Production of activated carbon within the dual fluidized bed gasification process2015In: Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, ISSN 0888-5885, E-ISSN 1520-5045, Vol. 54, no 15, p. 3761-3766Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A key step in the production of clean energy from biomass gasification is the cleaning of the product gas to remove impurities, such as tars, H2S, HCl, particulates, and alkali compounds. Some gas cleaning systems employ activated carbon (AC), with Brunauer-Ernmett-Teller (BET) surface areas in the range of 800-1300 m(2)/g. Because the operational conditions for the production of AC are similar to those applied in the gasification chamber of a dual fluidized bed gasifier, the possibility to produce AC within the dual fluidized bed gasification (DFBG) process was investigated in the present work. Wood pellets were gasified with steam in a fluidized bed reactor at 800 and 840 degrees C. Part of the unconverted char from this process was further activated with steam in a fixed bed reactor at 850 degrees C. The results obtained indicate that if >= 44% of the char that results from the devolatilization of the wood pellets is gasified (the extent of char conversion), the unconverted char acquires a BET surface area >900 m(2)/g, which makes it suitable for use in gas cleaning processes. Achieving this extent of char conversion in the gasification chamber of industrial dual fluidized gasification plants would remove the need and cost for a second reactor for further activation of the unconverted char. The cost of the produced activated carbon (AC) has been estimated as being 15-fold lower than that of commercially available AC. This suggests that the production of AC as part of the dual fluidized bed gasification process would be cost-effective.

Effects of Steam on the Release of Potassium, Chlorine, and Sulfur during Char Conversion, Investigated under Dual Fluidized Bed Gasification Conditions2014In: Energy & Fuels, ISSN 0887-0624, E-ISSN 1520-5029, Vol. 28, no 11, p. 6953-6965Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The corrosion and fouling of heat-transfer surfaces and the agglomeration of bed materials in fluidized beds are some of the ash-related problems caused by the transformation and release to the gas phase of ash-forming elements from biomass during thermochemical conversion processes. The magnitudes of these problems are largely dependent upon the release of potassium (K), chlorine (Cl), and sulfur (S) from the biomass. We investigated the effects of steam on the release of K, Cl, and S during char conversion, under conditions relevant for dual-fluidized-bed gasification (DFBG). The study was carried out with wheat straw in a laboratory-scale bubbling fluidized-bed reactor in the temperature range of 800-900 °C. The release of K, Cl, and S from wheat straw during devolatilization, char gasification, and char combustion was quantified with a mass balance that linked the masses of these elements in the wheat straw to the mass of the solid residue obtained at the end of each experiment. To facilitate analyses of the experimental results, leaching and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurement of the wheat straw and some of the solid residues were carried out. The results show that, during devolatilization, the release of volatile salts, e.g., KCl, is significantly limited by intraparticle diffusion resistance, owing to a compact char matrix (i.e., negligible porosity). However, during char gasification, steam renders the char less compact by expanding and/or creating new pores in the char. As a result, intraparticle diffusion resistance decreases, thereby facilitating the evaporation of volatile salts of K and S from the char matrix. The conversion of the char is also conducive to the release of char-bound K and S, especially at 900 °C. At temperatures of >800 °C, the relative proportions of the elements released and char gasified indicate that the release of K can somewhat be decoupled from the release of S and Cl by maximizing the extent of char conversion in the gasification chamber. The results also show that, during char combustion, the proportions of the char that can be combusted and the extent of the release of the elements are influenced by the extent to which the char is gasified in the gasification chamber.

Transformation and Release of Potassium, Chlorine, and Sulfur from Wheat Straw under Conditions Relevant to Dual Fluidized Bed Gasification2013In: Energy & Fuels, ISSN 0887-0624, E-ISSN 1520-5029, Vol. 27, no 12, p. 7510-7520Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The release and transformation of potassium (K), chlorine (Cl), and sulfur (S) from biomass during thermochemical conversion processes may lead to problems, such as the corrosion and fouling of heat transfer surfaces, agglomeration of bed material, and the poisoning of catalysts used in the downstream processes of gasifiers. To predict and to mitigate effectively these problems, information regarding the quantity and mechanism of the release of these elements under relevant operating conditions is required. In the present work, the release of K, Cl, and S from wheat straw under conditions relevant to dual fluidized bed gasification were quantified in a laboratory-scale bubbling fluidized bed reactor. During the pyrolysis step, the bed temperature ranged from 550 to 900 C, while the residence time for the fuel in the reactor was fixed at 3 min. The char samples obtained from the pyrolysis step were partially combusted at the same temperature at which they were produced for an additional 3 min. The fractions of the elements released from the fuel were quantified by chemical analysis of the char/residual ash obtained in each experiment and a mass balance across the system. Overall, 75%-62% of the Cl, 59%-67% of the S, and 14%-31% of the K in the virgin wheat straw were released during pyrolysis conducted within the investigated temperature range. The char obtained from the pyrolysis process contained significantly higher amounts of K, Cl, and S than the virgin fuel. Furthermore, the ash content of the char was about 5-fold higher than that of the virgin fuel. This suggests that at combustion-relevant temperatures, complete combustion of the char is more likely to result in severe ash-related problems than combustion of the virgin fuel. Partial combustion of the char resulted in additional release of K, Cl, and S. In addition to the experimental results, the transformation and release of the elements during this process are discussed with the aid of chemical thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and leaching.

    Abstract [sv]

NOISUN - Noise barriers with sun energy production for district heating system2013In: 42nd International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering 2013: Noise Control for Quality of Life, INTER-NOISE 2013;, 2013, Vol. 3, p. 2524-2532p. 2524-2532Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Noise exposure is a considerable environmental problem. Noise management is of increasing importance to human health and quality of life. Over two million people in Sweden are exposed to traffic noise exceeding 55 dB. The Swedish municipality of Lerum is divided by major transport thoroughfares for both road and rail traffic. In addition to tackling noise pollution, the municipality aims to invest in energy-saving and renewable energy technology in order to cut the emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. The project will demonstrate innovative noise barriers producing solar energy for distribution to local district heating systems, hence an environmentally sound technology. This will be achieved by installing and evaluating specially adapted solar collectors at a major transport thoroughfare for both road traffic and rail in Lerum, which has been identified as the most suitable location. The noise barrier effect will be evaluated by measurements and a questionnaire on perceived noise annoyance both before and after the barrier has been built. The number of properties and people with noise levels above the guideline value of 55 dB is expected to reduce by 60-90 percent and noise levels are expected to reduce by 5-10 dB. Solar collectors are expected to produce somewhat 250 000 kWh of heat at 75 °C to the district heating per year. Reduction of costs associated with noise of SEK 630 000 - 945 000 per year and an increase in the value of properties of 5% is expected.

    Abstract [sv]

In order to prevent a further increased use of resources and to decrease the environmental impact from landfills, organic wastes are today diverted towards material and energy recovery. This creates a waste market with an increasing number of waste fractions that needs to be treated properly. As an example, in Sweden it has recently been prohibited to landfill source separated combustible waste (2002) and organic waste (2005). Wastes as automotive shredder residue (ASR) and sewage sludge can no longer be landfilled and needs to be either material or energy recovered, which challenge the waste treatment sector. This work investigates the effects of ASR and sewage sludge co-combustion in a 20 MW Energy-from-Waste plant (bubbling fluidised bed). The long term objective of the work is to increase the fuel flexibility, the boiler availability and the power production. This report focus on boiler operation and combustion performance in terms of agglomeration, deposit rates and emissions. In addition to the tests with ASR and sewage sludge, repeated measurements were performed during normal load as a reference. The results show that the co-combusted fractions of ASR and sewage sludge, which on mass basis constituted 6 % and 15 % respectively, did not increase the risk for agglomeration or deposits on heat-exchanging surfaces. Instead, compared to the two reference cases, the deposit rates decreased when sewage sludge was added. Only minor variation in the emissions was seen between the different cases. The levels of I-TEQs were far below the legislated values in all cases.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Demand for cooling of commercial buildings is increasing and there is a potential for expanding district cooling systems, especially in district heating areas. Using district heating and district cooling has been compared to heat pump techniques. Primary energy, environmental influence and economy have been evaluated. Four buildings in Gothenburg have been included in the study and certain differences have been found depending on demands of heating and cooling, which vary according to design and activity. The results are specific for Gothenburg due to the combination of production methods for district heating and cooling and the pricing, which differ compared to other places. Different perspectives on production of electricity, district heating and district cooling, e.g. average or marginal production, is of vital importance when comparing environmental influence. In most of the case studies the demand of primary energy is lower for district heating and cooling compared to heat pump systems. With a marginal perspective district heating and cooling will lead to lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Using the perspective of average production will on the other hand rate heat pump systems to have a lower influence on the greenhouse effect in most of the cases. Which technique is the most cost efficient depends mainly upon relation of heating and cooling demands. Where there is a greater demand for cooling than for heating, district heating and cooling is more advantageous. It is a need for improved data in commercial buildings from reliable field measurements. The quality of the evaluation is very much dependent on reliable measured data from real installations.

A Comparative Study on Facially Expressed Emotions in Response to Basic Tastes2014In: Chemosensory Preception, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 1-9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Facially expressed emotions play a role in communication between individuals. They form another means of expressing oneself besides verbal expressions or self-reporting of feelings and perceptions on psychometric scales and are implicit in nature. This study aimed to evaluate the extent and specificity of evoking facial expressed emotions by basic tastes and to evaluate if facially expressed emotions provide additional information to explicit measures. The emotions were characterised upon tasting the five basic tastes in aqueous solutions at three different concentrations levels. The sensory and emotional responses reported were obtained from a 21-membered taste panel. Facial reactions and facially expressed emotions depended on the tastequality and taste intensity. However, the facially expressed emotions were generally weak even for the relatively strong taste intensities. Bitter (caffeine), sour (citric acid) and salty (sodium chloride) lead to clear disgust and surprise responses, whereas, sweet (sucrose) and umami (glutamic acid monosodium salt) taste gave weakly noticeable facially expressed emotions. Although correlations between the expressed emotions and hedonic responses were observed, the affective experience had a limited predictive ability for the facially expressed emotion at the individual level. In conclusion, psychometric rating of the hedonic response is easier to assess than facially expressed emotions although it may not completely represent the dimensions of the emotional experience.

Particle composition and size distribution in coal flames - The influence on radiative heat transfer2015In: Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, ISSN 0894-1777, E-ISSN 1879-2286, Vol. 64, p. 70-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Radiative heat transfer in a 77 kWth swirling lignite flame has been studied. The aim is to characterize different particle types present in a coal flame and to determine their influence on the radiative heat transfer. The study combines extractive particle measurements, radiative intensity measurements and detailed radiation modelling. The size distribution of the extracted particles was measured with a low pressure impactor and some of the size fractions were analysed with SEM–EDX. The measured total radiative intensity is compared with the modelled intensity based on the particle measurements in the same cross-section of the flame. The particle properties were calculated with Mie theory and the gas properties with a statistical narrow-band model. The results show that the contribution of coal/char particles dominates the radiative heat transfer in the investigated cross-section of the flame.
    Abstract [sv]

• Halmpellets rekommenderas att ej elda i använda multistokern, p.g.a. slaggning.

    Abstract [sv]

The increase of renewable energy by combustion of biofuel will likely lead to an increase in the use of biofuels with high ash content. These fuels are more demanding from a combustion perspective. To facilitate combustion of these fuels in small combustion devices (50 kW – a few MW), there is a need of inexpensive dust cleaning devices. This is urgent to facilitate increased biofuel combustion without counteraction with the Swedish environmental goal Clean Air (which contain goals for particles in the air). Electrostatic filters for dust cleaning at heat and power plants are well established. However, the cost of these filters is often expensive to bear for a small plant. A few electrostatic filters for residential applications are available, but the experience is limited. In the capacity-area in between, i.e. small district heating plants, it is of special importance to find new cheap alternatives for an improved dust cleaning. The Norwegian company Applied Plasma Physics (APP) have products for dust- and odour-cleaning. APP also has the electrostatic filter called R_ESP (Residential Electrostatic Precipitator) for combustion of wood close to commercially available. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the electrostatic filter R_ESP at combustion of biofuels rich in ash, and by this contribute to increased knowledge about electrostatic precipitation at small-scale applications. A sub-goal is to separate 85 % of the particles in the flue gas. Experimental tests were performed at SP’s Energy laboratory. R_ESP was mounted downstream of a chimney, which was mounted on a multi-stoker/boiler. The multi-stoker has a nominal heat output of 65 kW at combustion of wood pellets. In this project pellets of bark or reed canary grass were fired. Dust separation efficiency over the R_ESP with respect to number concentration and size distribution was tested for several powers of the filter, during combustion of the two fuels. Combustion of bark was selected for a longer time test with respect to separation efficiency by particle mass. Number concentration and size distribution were measured in real time using an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI) and mass concentration was measured by filter sampling. The combustion conditions were favourable, with low concentrations of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The number concentration of particles was 2.5 · 107 #/cmN3 and 1.9 · #/cmN3 (normalised to 10 % O2) at combustion of reed canary grass and bark respectively. The results show that the technique of R_ESP works well for cleaning of particles from efficient combustion of the ash-rich fuels reed canary grass and bark. The combustion device was run at 20 kW, which is a thermal output that may be present at a farm or a school. For such an application the existing R_ESP may be tested in field, but for larger plants a certain product development is needed. The objective to separate 85 % of the particles was reached at normal operation of the filter (60 W). Lowering the effect of the filter, a large part of the dust separation is maintained and at 20 W the separation was about 80 %. At combustion of bark a two-day test of dust separation with respect to mass was performed. It showed on a dust separation efficiency of 82 % at 30 W power of the electrostatic filter.

Factors influencing residents’ energy use—A study of energy-related behaviour in 57 Swedish homes2015In: Energy and Buildings, ISSN 0378-7788, E-ISSN 1872-6178, Vol. 87, no Aug, p. 243-252Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work has been to study everyday energy-related behaviour in homes. All residents in 57 Swedish homes, living in three housing areas, have recorded time diaries over a period of four days, during the same time period in each area. The technical differences between the houses are limited, as the building designs within each housing area are the same. On an aggregated level, the diary data has been analysed with and without typical power data of appliances as well as in relation to measured total energy use, indoor temperature and water usage. Cluster analyses have been performed in order to find characteristics of groups of residents with regard to their energy-related behaviour. Some of the findings were that residents report long time use/operating time for activities related to electronic equipment (45% of total reported time). Residents which used energy to a greater extent than others were characterised by performing activities with long operating times, in combination with high, and fairly high, typical power ratings. The majority of residents showed many different energy-related behaviours, which indicates that a number of strategies to influence the behaviours - not just one - will be required.

Influence of residents on energy use in 57 Swedish houses measured during four winter days2012In: Energy and Buildings, Vol. 54, p. 376-385Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge about energy use in residential buildings. Field measurements were carried out in 57 electrically heated Swedish single-family houses, where the total energy use (i.e. electricity use for space heating, household electricity and electricity use for hot water production), indoor temperatures and water use were recorded during four winter days. Some of the findings were that differences for households' total energy use of similar houses were large. The characteristics of load curves clearly differ between weekdays and weekend days. The water use differs greatly for the households. This paper is part of a larger project where time use diaries were used in order to further link the energy use to residents' every day energy related behaviours. To get a better understanding of the energy use in our homes is a prerequisite to be able to both recognise the problems as well as the potentials of reaching energy goals of our society, leading to a decreased impact on the environment from the building sector.
