Using a template-stripping method, macroscopic gold surfaces with root-mean-square (rms) roughness less than 0.4 nm have been prepared, making them useful for studies of surface interactions in the nanometer range. The utility of such substrates is demonstrated by measurements of the Casimir force at surface separations between 20 and 100 nm, resulting in good agreement with theory. The significance and quantification of this agreement is addressed, as well as some methodological aspects regarding the measurement of the Casimir force with high accuracy

We reexamine the Casimir and Lifshitz theories of intermolecular forces at nonzero temperature. For dilute media and atomic interactions, the limits of validity of the London-van der Waals potential between atoms at finite temperature are established by a detailed asymptotic analysis. In the retarded limit, the Casimir-Polder interaction potential is shown to be rigorously correct only in the limit of zero temperature. At any non-zero temperature a different analytic form obtains and is derived. We then consider Casimir forces between perfectly conducting plates. Existing results for the case of intervening vacuum are recovered by a novel method. Moreover, we show that the Mellin transform technique and theory of generalized zeta functions allows a detailed asymptotic treatment of a system of perfectly conducting plates with an intervening electron plasma, useful in the modeling of forces between metal plates, where the finite metallic skin-depth is an important consideration.

The interaction potential at finite temperature between two atoms in the asymptotic limit of large separations $R\gg\hbar c/k_{B}T$ is shown to be $V\left(R\right) = -3k_{B}T\alpha^{2}\left(0\right)/R^{6}$, identical to the expression for two classical polarizable dipoles. This is in contrast to the zero-temperature, large-separation Casimir-Polder retarded potential $V\left(R\right) = -23\hbar c\alpha^{2}\left(0\right)/4\pi R^{7}$. The result is demonstrated by taking the low-density limit in the Lifshitz theory of interacting macroscopic bodies, and independently through a quantum-electrodynamical fourth-order perturbation theory calculation with averaging over a thermally excited blackbody radiation field. An interpretation is offered in terms of the nature of the thermal excitations of the field, leading to a manifestation of the correspondence principle at sufficiently large interatomic distances.

Wall-collision broadening of near-infrared absorption lines of molecular oxygen confined in nanoporous zirconia is studied by employing high-resolution diode-laser spectroscopy. The broadening is studied for pores of different sizes under a range of pressures, providing new insights on how wall collisions and intermolecular collisions influence the total spectroscopic line profile. The pressure series show that wall-collision broadening is relatively more prominent under reduced pressures, enabling sensitive means to probe pore sizes of porous materials. In addition, we show that the total wall-collision-broadened profile strongly deviates from a Voigt profile and that wall-collision broadening exhibits an additive-like behavior to the pressure and Doppler broadening. © 2011 American Physical Society.
