Integrating rule-based modelling and constraint programming for solving industrial packing problems2010In: ERCIM News, ISSN 0926-4981, E-ISSN 1564-0094, p. 34-35Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Packing items in bins is an old but nevertheless challenging combinatorial problem with numerous applications in industry. We report on an original approach based on constraint programming and rule-based modelling, which has been investigated in the framework of the FP6 ‘specific targeted research project’ Net-WMS (Towards integrating virtual reality and optimization techniques in a new generation of Networked businesses in Warehouse Management Systems under constraints). It has applications in the automotive industry.

For safety reasons, autonomous vehicles should communicate their intent rather than explicitly invitepeople to act. At RISE Viktoria in Sweden, we believe this simple design principle will impact howautonomous vehicles are experienced in the future

High Assurance Security Products on COTS Platforms2015In: ERCIM News, ISSN 0926-4981, E-ISSN 1564-0094, p. 39-40Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With commodity operating systems failing to establish unbreakable isolation of processes, there is a need for stronger separation mechanisms. A recently launched open source project aims at applying virtualization to achieve such isolation on the widespread embedded ARM architectures. Strong assurance is established by formal verification and common criteria certification. Coexisting guest systems are able to run unmodified on the multicore platform, in a resource and cost efficient manner. The solution is rounded anchored in a secure boot process.

    Abstract [en]

Dependency derivation and the creation of dependency graphs are critical tasks for increasing the understanding of an industrial process. However, the most commonly used correlation measures are often not appropriate to find correlations between time series. We present a measure that solves some of these problems.

What did the others do? Recommending by Visualising Fellow Travellers2003In: ERCIM News, ISSN 0926-4981, E-ISSN 1564-0094, no 53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A problem when making recommendations based on the aggregated behavior of many users (collaborative recommendation) is to explain the rationale behind the recommendation. Our work investigates the alternative approach of visualizing the collaborative data, leaving it to the user to decide on a course of action, i.e. create the recommendation. A prototype system was built and evaluated in a joint project with the international transport and travel service company Stena Line. A user study showed that displaying statistics on other traveler’s ticket bookings indeed functioned as recommendations.

    Abstract [en]

The problem of authorisation, delegation, and authorisation management in distributed systems has been studied at SICS for the last two years. Our main focus has been the development of delegation logic which is based on th eidea of delegation as the explicit yet constrained creation of new privileges.

    Abstract [en]

The Stochastic Pattern Computing project at SICS studied the mathematical foundations of humanlike flexible information processing methods that compute with high-dimensional random vectors. The project ended in 2001 and led to the development of the Random Indexing technique for acquiring and representing semantic information about linguistic units.
