Assessment of ground-based microwave radiometry for calibration of atmospheric variability in spacecraft tracking2014Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, ISSN 0018-926X, E-ISSN 1558-2221, Vol. 62, nr 5, s. 2634-2641Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In a suggested radio propagation experiment using a deep space antenna, accurate calibration of the propagation delay through the Earth's atmosphere is essential. One or two microwave radiometers can be used for this purpose. Differences in precise locations of the radiometer(s) and antenna to be calibrated leave a residual wet path delay value. We computed the Allan Standard Deviation (ASD) of this residual, as well as the one resulting from different pointing positions in the plane of the sky, by simulations. Pointing offsets, e.g., to avoid solar radiation into the radiometer beam, lead in general to an increased ASD. However, for many observation geometries a deliberate pointing offset can compensate for the location differences. In the case studied we found a reduction of the ASD with up to 45% compared to the ASD obtained for a zero pointing offset. The size of the calculated ASD depends strongly on the model parameters used, e.g., the turbulence strength parameter Cn 2, which has a significant natural variation over a year.

Technique of Ground Size Tuning for Isolation between Monopoles in Compact Wireless Terminals2012Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, ISSN 0018-926X, E-ISSN 1558-2221, Vol. 60, nr 11, s. 5488-5491Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Achieving good isolation between two antennas in a wireless terminal is a challenge, especially if it is small compared to the wavelength. This communication presents a technique useful for two monopoles. It is based on placing the monopoles collinearly and tuning the ground plane size to approximately λ/4. Simulations and measurements are presented to illustrate the technique. Different methods of tuning the ground plane size in small terminals are discussed.

Sample Selection Algorithms for Enhanced MIMO Antenna Measurements Using Mode-Stirred Reverberation Chambers2012Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, ISSN 0018-926X, E-ISSN 1558-2221, Vol. 60, nr 8, s. 3892-3900Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Mode-stirred reverberation chambers (MSRCs) are a useful tool for measuring several wireless-related MIMO antenna parameters. In a conventional single-cavity MSRC, the emulated fading environment is isotropic and the amplitude of the signal is Rayleigh distributed. Previous contributions have enhanced the emulation capabilities of MSRCs so as to include the ability to emulate Rician- and non-isotropic fading environments. In this contribution, arbitrary amplitude probability density functions (PDF) emulation using a MSRC is presented by selecting parts of the sample set that forms different statistical ensembles. Several algorithms are presented and compared in terms of computation time and power accuracy using simulated as well as measured data from different MSRCs to obtain Rician, on-body and amplitude PDFs of standardized models. The technique is patent-protected by EMITE.
