    Abstract [sv]

Towards a cellulose-based society: current market and consumer trends2017Inngår i: The 7th Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, 28-30 Mar. 2017: NWBC 2017, Stockholm: RISE Bioekonomi , 2017, s. 1-Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

It has been proposed that the future of the forest industry will involve the traditional value chains combined with the needs and demands of a bio-based economy. A global consumer survey was undertaken, together with interviews and workshops with various representatives through the bio-economy. Sources also included in-depth literature studies and research reviews. Based on this input, several current trends have been identified that will affect the route towards a cellulose-based society. These trends describe the effects of urbanization, consumer behaviour, new business models, material recycling, open innovation and the necessity for early demonstration of new research. Four different but equally plausible scenarios have been identified describing the society and the role of cellulose in 2030, highlighting the role of the wood-based biorefinery.

Affordability Aspects in the Development of Defence Equipment: Case Studies of Concept Generation in the Defence Industry2021Inngår i: Defence and Peace Economics, ISSN 1024-2694, E-ISSN 1476-8267, Vol. 32, nr 7, s. 847-863Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Cost escalation for many complex defence equipment is arguably not sustainable. Customer driven requirements have led to an exponential increase in costs by pushing frontiers of technology to support primarily incremental improvements of traditional equipment concepts. Accordingly, affordability has become a more discussed subject in defence acquisition. This paper addresses the process of generating complex defence equipment concepts. The purpose is to explore how affordability is managed in that process and to identify possible leads to how an unsustainable cost escalation for this type of equipment can be curbed. This is done by studying two cases of concept generation of future combat air equipment systems from a company process perspective. This applied micro perspective on cost escalation showed that none of the concepts generated in these two cases were assessed to curb the cost escalation. Further, the innovation model for the generated concepts, with only one notable exception, was incremental. Nevertheless, the empirical observations from these two cases offer leads on how to potentially foster a more innovative and affordability-oriented concept generation process for future defence equipment, as well as indicating avenues for future research.

Directionality in transformative policy missions: The case of reaching net zero emissions in the Swedish process industry2024Inngår i: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 437, artikkel-id 140664Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

This paper proposes a directionality framework that highlights goal, sector and solution as key dimensions of transformative policy missions. The framework is used to investigate the directionality of process industry decarbonization in Sweden, by analyzing the orientation of projects supported by the major national funding program the ‘Industry Leap’ between 2017 and 2022. The results show that innovation activities (i) mainly aim to reduce fossil emissions rather than produce negative emissions, (ii) focus on the steel and chemicals industries, and (iii) engage mostly with carbon capture, electrification and hydrogen. This indicates that innovation activities are somewhat narrow and imbalanced, which suggests that policymakers should promote broader experimentation. The theoretical and empirical contribution of this paper supports academics, policymakers and other actors in understanding, evaluating and shaping the directionality of transformative policy missions.

On the functional and structural scope of technological innovation systems – A literature review with conceptual suggestions2023Inngår i: Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, ISSN 2210-4224, E-ISSN 2210-4232, Vol. 49, artikkel-id 100786Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews how the functional and structural scope of technological innovation systems (TIS) are understood in the literature. We find that it is often unclear if the system function involves innovation, production or both, and a lack of agreement as to whether structural elements are social or social and technical. Since these issues risk hindering cumulative knowledge development and conceptual advancements, we argue that a clear and shared underlying system model is needed. Taking steps in this direction, we propose that the function of a TIS is to develop and shape a specific technology; that this technology can be understood as a production-consumption system; and that the structural elements of a TIS are social, technical and possibly ecological. In addition, we offer guidance to boundary-setting in empirical case studies. We hope that the paper will inspire continued conceptual development in the TIS community and beyond.

    Towards a socio-techno-ecological approach to sustainability transitions2024Inngår i: Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, ISSN 2210-4224, E-ISSN 2210-4232, Vol. 51, artikkel-id 100846Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The literature on sustainability transitions departs from the idea that social and environmental problems call for transformative change but employs socio-technical frameworks that treat nature as a passive context. In this paper, we argue that transitions research should adopt a socio-technoecological approach that accounts better for ecological elements. To take steps in this direction, we review adjacent literature that engages with socio-ecological and socio-techno-ecological systems concepts. Based on insights from this literature, we discuss emerging topics for the development of a socio-techno-ecological transitions framework. Our contribution paves the way for further theoretical development and empirical validation by motivating, contextualizing and sketching a roadmap towards a more comprehensive approach to transitions research.

Socio-techno-ecological transition dynamics in the re-territorialization of food production: the case of wild berries in Sweden2024Inngår i: Sustainability Science, ISSN 1862-4065, E-ISSN 1862-4057Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

Recent geopolitical and economic crises underline the need for a European transition towards a more sustainable food system. Scholars and policymakers have called for a re-territorialization of food production to strike a better balance between local, regional and global value chains. This paper explores the role of re-territorialization through an analysis of the emergence, development and current transformation of the Swedish wild berry value chain. The analysis combines the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions with a socio-techno-ecological system approach and draws on interviews, informal conversations, participant observations and a range of secondary sources. The resulting case narrative shows how processes of de-territorialization may result in regimes that fail to address sustainability potential and problems. It also highlights that processes of re-territorialization challenge established regimes by promoting niches that represent diferent, albeit complementary, value chain confgurations. Apart from a rich empirical narrative that brings useful knowledge to stakeholders to the Swedish wild berry value chain, the paper contributes to the theoretical understanding re-territorialization, shows how the ecological dimension can be accounted for with the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions and presents a number of general policy implications.

RISE Policylabb – de första fem åren2023Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this report, we have compiled our learnings and experiences of working with Policy Lab. Policy Labs have come about as an answer to the question "Can you work with policy and regulatory development in a better way than today?". Our answer to the question is a yes. Our hope with the report is that others will become interested and start their own Policy Lab. Abroad, there are many Policy Labs, but in Sweden there are only a few, which is why we believe there is room for more. There is not a given way to work with Policy Labs once and for all, but each Policy Lab is unique based on its context. Sweden's innovation agency Vinnova defines Policy Labs as follows: "Policy Labs can be explained as a group of actors with different competencies who want to develop a regulatory framework. In the Policy Lab, they use a set of user-centric methods and competencies to test, experiment, and learn in policy development."1 In our Policy Lab, we have worked in various research projects to: 1. analyse challenges/problems that arise between innovations, technology, market, and regulations, 2. develop one or more workable solutions and 3. interact with relevant actors to determine the next steps. What distinguishes our Policy Lab is that we never “own” the issue or solution. We must therefore always work with other actors who can take the results further. Our goal is to enable and skill people. This means that for us it is important to work concretely with real problems and needs owners and preferably test different solutions. We focus on the here and now perspective and not on what the future will look like in 10 years. It is about taking the next step forward towards the future, not creating the best rule, but instead creating the next rule. We also work consistently agile and use design as a method for problem solving. This means that the way we organize our work in the Policy Lab is circular and not linear. When it comes to using design as a method for problem solving, we use the concepts of "design thinking" and "double diamond". For us, it is also important that the members of the Policy Lab have different backgrounds and skills depending on what is needed in the individual project....

ARKILOG: En studie om hur arkitektkontor organiserar sitt arbete med medborgardialog i stadsbyggnadsprojekt2019Rapport (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Socio-economic effects and the value of open data: A case from Sweden2021Inngår i: Proc. of 23rd ITS Biennial Conference, 2021Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Governmental and public organisations have historically been generating and accumulating vast amounts of data which could provide many potential benefits for society and national economies. One example of an important dataset is accounts payable providing information about purchases and expenditures of the governmental sector. Academic research in the area of open data is rather new and fragmented. There is a gap in understanding socio-economic impact of open government data ex post at organisational level. This research aims to understand what kind of socio-economic impact a municipality gains by publishing accounts payable as open data, and how municipalities perceive the major benefits, challenges and risks related to open publishing of this dataset. For analysis, we use the example of Swedish municipalities that are already publishing or preparing to publish accounts payable dataset as open data. We discuss costs related to open data initiative, and benefits related to open publishing of analysed dataset. We also provide more insights into benefits and challenges perceived by municipalities in relation to open publishing of accounts payable.

Socio-economic effects of opening government accounts payable (Leverantörsreskontra) data2021Rapport (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The objectives of this study were to analyse: (i) efficiency gains that a municipality would gain by publishing accounts payable data as open data; and (ii) socio-economic effects with a major focus on democracy aspects. Summarising, we can state that potential efficiency gains related to opening accounts payable data can be significant, which was also confirmed by previous studies. Based on experience of Swedish municipalities publishing accounts payable as open data, we have made an estimation of potential efficiency gains due to reduced time to answer inquiries coming from citizens, journalists, and organisations. Based on these assessments, the potential efficiency gains may reach approximately 2 million kr per year for large municipalities. Additionally, availability of open data on accounts payable may result in further reduction of time needed to handle an inquiry due to opportunity to direct a person to thee open data file, a more exact and specific question formulation, and reduced number of inquiries. It was found that democratic aspects in publishing accounts payable were perceived as more important than potential time savings and efficiency gains. This is especially important for smaller municipalities, which do not get that many inquiries and cannot expect the same level of savings effect. Democracy aspects are closely related to transparency, openness, and opportunity to push procurement prices down. All this leads to even greater savings for municipalities. Another important aspect is finding mistakes and discovery of corruption cases. Elimination of such cases in the future would result in considerable savings at national level. One of the important findings of this research is the fact that municipalities already publishing open data do not see any related risks, while municipalities that are only preparing to publish open data see a number of risks related to open data publishing. The major concerns are related to confidentiality, privacy, and secrecy risks, unclear quality of data, and increased workload for some units. We also make a number of recommendations from different perspectives, which could accelerate the process of open data publishing. This analysis was carried out by Tatjana Apanasevic from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden as a part of Nationell Skalning Öppna Data (NSÖD) project, financed by Vinnova. The analysis is based on primary data collected through interviews with seven municipalities (the City of Gothenburg, the City of Lidingö, Skövde, Varberg, Karlskrona, Uppsala, and Skellefteå), a service provider, consultants working with open data, and three (data) journalists.

Öppna data publicerings process : Leverantörsreskontra, Varberg kommun. Uppföljningsstudie2021Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Crowdsourcing and Public Transportation: Barriers and Opportunities2021Inngår i: Proc of 23rd ITS Biennial Conference, 2021Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the last decade, private companies have successfully used crowdsourcing to revolutionise mobility, while public transport companies are still mostly failing to utilise the benefits of crowdsourcing. The application of crowdsourcing in public transport is a new area of academic research, and research on crowdsourcing en route in real-time is missing. This research aims to address this gap, explore opportunities and challenges of this type of crowdsourcing, and conceptualise this phenomenon. The research is based on empirical data collected in five Northern European countries. Our research findings help identify areas where crowdsourcing en route can add value to public transport: new forms of communication, opportunities to communicate with third parties, and improved transit planning and optimisation. Identified challenges are related to behavioural change for users, a need to develop infrastructure to enable crowdsourcing en route, and financial rationalities.

Cirkulära möbelflöden: Hur nya affärsmodeller kan bidra till hållbar utveckling inom offentliga möbler2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Systems-of-Systems Design Patterns: A Systematic Literature Review and Synthesis2022Inngår i: 2022 17th Annual System of Systems Engineering Conference, SOSE 2022, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2022, s. 171-176Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Design patterns are an established approach for reusing knowledge about good solutions to recurring problems. Patterns can be seen as a way of describing the best practices, and have been used in many different fields, ranging from building architecture and city planning to software development. There are also scattered results relating to patterns for systems-of-systems. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and review the literature on patterns for systems-of-systems and make a synthesis of a recommended approach for the field. Specifically, the novel contributions of the paper are to propose a consolidated structure for describing individual patterns and suggest the dimensions along which a pattern catalog can be organized. The paper also summarizes the concrete patterns suggested in the existing literature and classifies them according to the recommended structure.

On the Concepts of Capability and Constituent System Independence in Systems-of-Systems2022Inngår i: 2022 17th Annual System of Systems Engineering Conference, SOSE 2022, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2022, s. 247-252Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Systems-of-systems are designed to provide a capability that their constituent systems cannot achieve individually. A key property is that the constituent systems have some degree of operational and managerial independence. The concepts of capability and independence are thus central to the field of systems-of-systems. Yet the contemporary literature and standards only give vague definitions of these terms. This vagueness is a barrier to progress in the field, and this paper aims at contributing with a more detailed conceptualization. It describes a system capability as a state-transforming process that uses certain resources. Independence means that the system has a choice about when and how its capabilities should be activated. This requires that the system is an intelligent agent with a notion of utility, a perception of the world around it, and a decision-making capability. When given a mission, the system can complete that mission by activating appropriate combinations of capabilities. A system-of-systems can decompose its mission into parts that correspond to the capabilities of various constituent systems.

    Trycktäthet i gjutgods2012Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Duopoly insurers’ incentives for data quality under a mandatory cyber data sharing regime2023Inngår i: Computers & security (Print), ISSN 0167-4048, E-ISSN 1872-6208, Vol. 131, artikkel-id 103292Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We study the impact of data sharing policies on cyber insurance markets. These policies have been proposed to address the scarcity of data about cyber threats, which is essential to manage cyber risks. We propose a Cournot duopoly competition model in which two insurers choose the number of policies they offer (i.e., their production level) and also the resources they invest to ensure the quality of data regarding the cost of claims (i.e., the data quality of their production cost). We find that enacting mandatory data sharing sometimes creates situations in which at most one of the two insurers invests in data quality, whereas both insurers would invest when information sharing is not mandatory. This raises concerns about the merits of making data sharing mandatory.

    A Bibliometric Study on Swedish Neutron Users for the Period 2006–20202021Inngår i: Neutron News, ISSN 1044-8632, E-ISSN 1931-7352, Vol. 32, nr 4, s. 28-Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Neutron Scattering Society (SNSS) is an organization open to all those associated with Sweden who are using, or interested in the use of, neutron scattering techniques. Currently, the SNSS has around 230 members distributed all over Sweden. The SNSS is a member of the European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) [1], which represents the majority of the national neutron scattering societies and committees in Europe. The overriding objectives of the SNSS are to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of information related to neutron scattering, to stimulate the use of neutron techniques at present-day and future neutron sources, to promote cooperation in neutron science, and to strengthen and broaden the competence in neutron science in Sweden. To meet these objectives, SNSS is engaged in and takes the lead in a variety of different activities. Examples of such are the organization of conferences, workshops, schools and other educational activities related to neutron scattering. Additionally, SNSS represents Swedish neutron scatterers in strategic discussions with funding agencies, universities, scattering communities, and neutron facilities. In 2015, SNSS developed a Swedish Strategy for science using neutrons [2]. This is regularly reviewed and updated, and supports in, e.g., decision making processes related to research and education using neutron scattering techniques at universities, industries, funding agencies, and other stakeholders. Furthermore, SNSS hosts a web page with relevant information for and about the Swedish and international neutron scattering community, including monthly research highlights [3]. SNSS also distributes an electronic Monthly Newsletter to all members and posts with news on Twitter. To analyze the current scientific activities where neutron scattering is used involving scientists with a Swedish affiliation and to meet the above mentioned objectives, the SNSS Board has carried out a bibliometric survey, which is presented in this document.

Spreading joy: examining the effects of smiling models on consumer joy and attitudes2015Inngår i: Journal of Consumer Marketing, ISSN 0736-3761, E-ISSN 2052-1200, Vol. 32, nr 6, s. 459-469Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine consumer response to pictures of smiling models in marketing, focusing on the roles of emotional contagion from the smiling models and the perceived typicality of marketing with smiling models. Design/methodology/approach – This paper reports the findings from three experimental studies, comparing consumer response to two versions of an advertisement (Study 1) and a packaging design (Study 2 and 3), including either a picture of a smiling or a non-smiling model. To measure consumer response, a combination of self-report questionnaires and eye-tracking methodology was used. Findings – The pictures of smiling models produced more consumer joy and more positive attitudes for the marketing. The positive effects on attitudes were mediated by consumer joy, and the effects on consumer joy were mediated by the perceived typicality of the marketing with smiling models. Originality/value – Despite the ubiquity of photos of smiling faces in marketing, very few studies have isolated the effects of the smile appeal on consumer response to marketing objects. By comparing marketing where the same model is shown smiling or with a neutral facial expression, the positive effects were isolated. The roles of emotional contagion and perceived typicality in this mechanism were also examined and implications of the findings for research and practitioners are discussed.

Shared mobility services in Swedish rural areas: Development and demonstration of the KomILand-concept2021Inngår i: 2021 International Transport Forum (ITF) Pre-Summit Research Day, 2021Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Transport accounts for a large share of global green-house gas emissions. Research efforts are being made to identify, develop, and test new types of resource efficient solutions that meet peoples’ mobility needs. A growing trend within this realm is so called shared mobility services – such as car-sharing, bicycle rental, and ride-sourcing – which is expected to have the potential to complement and strengthen public transport and support less car-centric lifestyles. Shared mobility has become an integral part of the dominant discourse around the future of transport (autonomous-connected-electric-shared), and although their modal shares still are minor, recent years have seen significant growth of shared mobility services.

However, eforts to develop shared mobility services have predominantly been made in urban areas where the services are expected to have greater impact on green-house gas reduction. Further, most research on shared mobility has focused on urban areas . Consequently, there is a lack of empirical research on how shared mobility services can be organized in rural areas, and what effects they can have on aspects such as of car ownership, green-house gas emissions, and quality of life.

The KomILand project set out to address these knowledge gaps by developing and testing the KomILand concept – a regional Mobility-as-a-Service platform that enable rural dwellers to put together shared mobility service offerings that are tailored to the specific needs of their communities. An initial pre-study (2017-2018) paved the way for a trial of the concept by identifying suitable rural towns, likely user groups and their demands, key service components, and possible business models. Subsequently, the ongoing trial phase of the project (2019-2021) aims to develop a functional prototype and to test it in collaboration with civic associations in three rural towns with 800-900 inhabitants in Västra Götaland in West Sweden.

In the following, this extended abstract first presents key findings from the pre-study. Thereafter, a few insights from the ongoing trial are provided prior to a concluding discussion on possible pathways for the journey from a temporary, small-scale trial towards a region-wide and continuous operation.

    Abstract [sv]

The double-sided nature of lifestyle-oriented work in the Swedish equine industry2021Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The equine industry faces problems in terms of recruitment and retention of employees when it comes to fostering decent working conditions and sustainable employments, despite the obvious advantage of offering a lifestyle-oriented work with the privilege of personal leisure interests. The overall aim is to gain knowledge of how employees in the equine industry – here including riding schools and trotting stables – experience their work and work environment. The study is part of two larger research projects, financed by the Swedish-Norwegian Foundation for Equine Research and AFA Insurance, where the purpose is to, in close collaboration with the equine industry, identify and implement methods and tools for a systematic work environment management. The study includes data from a questionnaire, individual interviews and observations. The results showed that the employees considered their work as one of the most important things in life, that they primarily worked for self-realization and good quality of life and that they perceived their current work both attractive and meaningful. Love of horses, passion for the sport, practical work in an outdoor setting, significant, stimulating and varied tasks as well as workplace relations, are the most important factors for the attractiveness and meaningfulness of the work. Nevertheless, imbalance between work and leisure time as well as high physical workload and lack of adequate equipment challenges the experience of an attractive, meaningful and sustainable work. The experiences differed somewhat between the two groups examined, i.e. employees in riding schools and trotting stables.

Explaining business model innovation processes: A problem formulation and problem solving perspective2022Inngår i: Industrial Marketing Management, ISSN 0019-8501, E-ISSN 1873-2062, Vol. 105, s. 223-239Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study explains the business model innovation processes in industrial firms. Drawing on three case studies of leading business-to-business firms shifting from product-based to service-based business models, it introduces problems as a theoretical concept to explain business model innovation processes. We show how formulating and solving problems guide the search for a viable business model and why some problem formulation and solving activities lead firms to shift between backward-looking and forward-looking searches. The decision to shift to a forward-looking search is triggered by the perception of failure to continue with an established way of working, while the shift to a backward-looking search is based on the perception of high alternative costs. We contribute to the business model innovation and servitization literature by theorizing the process of business model innovation and providing implications for managers.

    Engångskärnor i pressgjutgods2013Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden’s first Social Impact Bond (SIB) or, as preferred, Social Outcomes Contract (SOC), was a collaborative project between Norrköping local authority and private social investor Leksell Social Ventures (LSV) supported by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (Mission Mental Health) and Lumell Associates. The aim was to address a social challenge – improving outcomes for youth and children placed in institutional care. After an intense period of feasibility studies and contracting negotiations, the SOC became operational in August 2016. Active work with the target group continued until first quarter 2019 and the evaluation phase was completed in February 2021. This report presents the results in terms of achieved outcomes as well as a broader perspective of learnings, for Norrköping and for the general development of social investment in Sweden. The SOC should be considered a form of social investment, where an initial cost leads to longer term social and economic benefits to society. There are many examples of social investments in Sweden where local authorities have reserved internal funding in so-called social investment funds. The Norrköping SOC was the first Swedish example of a social investment case where a private investor provided a loan to the local authority for upfront funding together with a risk sharing model connected to achieved outcomes. Norrköping and LSV agreed in the SOC that LSV would provide up to 10 million SEK (~1 MEUR) for the project. The associated risk sharing model was such that Norrköping would guarantee 40 % repayment on activity while the outstanding 60 % would be repaid if cost savings in social services would be achieved. Each SEK saved in social service costs would be divided between the parts corresponding to their financial risk (60/40) up to project break even. If the savings would be larger than project costs, LSV would be allowed a total ROI capped at 20 % conditional on improved school outcomes for the target group. The evaluation period was 24 months per individual in the target group and compared with a historic reference group. If the target group individual has lower costs over the evaluation period than its comparison group average, then this provides a positive net saving. If an individual improves when it comes to school performance over 24 months, a positive value is registered, if not, a negative value. Values are assigned from -3 to +3 following an ad hoc model designed for this project (to take into account the wide age span and different educational settings for the target group). Norrköping decided it to be outside legal scope to create a historic comparison group for school performance. Net results for costs and school performance are added for the target group and thus establishing contract outcomes. In addition to primary outcomes, the project was also monitoring mental wellbeing, substance abuse, supporting relations with family and social network and achievement of individual goals. Having a 24-month evaluation period (from when the intervention starts) turned out to be challenging with costs increasing with 7,5 million SEK. However, school performance and social outcomes were all positive. Data suggested that over time, net costs were decreasing, and the project partners agreed to extend the monitoring period to 36 months, but to do this outside of the contract. Over 36 months, the evaluation indicates reduced social service costs of 4 million SEK. The project cost is 7.5 million SEK leading to a net result of -3.5 million SEK. The result is distributed between parts so that Norrköping ends with +1 million and LSV with -4.5 million SEK. In summary, the contract did not perform in the sense that LSV was not eligible to be repaid more than the 40 % guarantee. But from a project and target group perspective, the results are quite positive, both in terms of social and school outcomes and in terms of the extended period cost savings. It can also be noticed that several hypothetically positive outcomes for the target group and for society are not included in the evaluation model. All in all, the SOC should be considered a successful social investment.

Consumer demand for circular products: Identifying customer segments in the circular economy2021Inngår i: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 13, nr 22, artikkel-id 12348Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Understanding consumer preferences in the circular economy can help producers develop profitable strategies, lowering the risk involved in transitioning to circular business models and circular product design. This study uses a choice experiment to identify customer segments for mobile phones and robot vacuum cleaners at different levels of circularity. The experiment observes how a product’s theoretical Circular Economy Score (ranging from 0 to 100) influences consumer preferences as compared to other product attributes like price, appearance, warranty, battery life, reseller type, or ease of repair. Drawing from 800 UK respondents, the results indicate the presence of three customer segments that are sensitive to a product’s Circular Economy Score, including two that appear willing to purchase recirculated items and one that expresses a preference against them. The results offer initial evidence that a market for recirculated consumer electronics exists and that circularity labeling is a marketable option. The results also present a strong rationale for further research that probes a greater variety of products and contexts. © 2021 by the authors

    Re-configuring practices in times of energy crisis – A case study of Swedish households2024Inngår i: Energy Research & Social Science, ISSN 2214-6296, E-ISSN 2214-6326, Vol. 114, artikkel-id 103578Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

During the autumn, winter and early spring of 2022/2023, Europe faced rapidly increasing energy prices and threats of power cuts. The situation was consequently labelled an “energy crisis”, and one sector that was severely affected was households. In response to the situation, European households made efforts to reduce and time-shift their energy use to mitigate the effects of the crisis. Considering that domestic energy practices are often difficult to change, particularly in the long term, we find this effect of the energy crisis on households important to understand more deeply. In this paper, we use social practice theory to investigate how Swedish households responded to the crisis and what changes they made in terms of re-configurations of their practices. The aim was to contribute knowledge on how households adapt to a changing energy system with volatile prices, limitations in electric power, and threats of energy crisis. We conducted two rounds of semi-structured interviews with 9 households in single-family houses in the middle and south of Sweden during and after the crisis, in total 18 interviews, to examine what re-configurations of practices emerged and which persisted over time. The results show that significant changes were apparent in primarily the practice domains of heating and hygiene. While some of these changes were temporary, other re-configurations of energy practices persisted beyond the months of crisis and high prices, indicating that meanings of frugality and sufficiency were strengthened. Our results demonstrate that households were reminded of certain electricity use that is otherwise typically backgrounded in homes and that the energy crisis stimulated re-configuration and re-examination of norms as well as reflection on electricity use in general. Finally, we discuss the effects of the energy crisis on household practices in comparison with other crises and disruptions, and point to the importance of communicating clearly with households about the societal effects of their efforts, in order to manage the legacy of this crisis for similar future crisis situations.

The role of influencing organisations in promoting sustainability of urban freight transport2021Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The research in this thesis focused on organisations that can contribute to increased sustainability development in urban freight transport activities. In this study, these organisations were identified, studied, grouped together and labelled as influencing organisations. Four types of influencing organisations in urban freight transport were identified: Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), facility management companies, property owners and public procurement organisations. The results indicated that influencing organisations use a variety of measures and engage in a wide range of urban freight transport initiatives. The way that they engage depends on the types of organisations involved and the relationships the influencers had with said organisations. The findings suggest that influencing organisations have certain characteristics, including: i) the ability to unite other actors, notably goods receivers (such as shops, offices, hotels, restaurants), ii) high motivation to engage in urban freight transport-related questions and sustainability, iii) possessing effective tools to promote sustainable measures, such as the capability to orchestrate and consolidate physical flows, leverage based on contractual relationships, administrative power, outreach power and serving as a common voice for establishments. This places them in a strong position to support the upscaling of sustainable urban freight transport initiatives and broaden the level of implementation. This study paid attention to actors beyond those that are directly associated with urban freight supply chains (carriers, shippers, goods receivers and regulators) to increase the understanding of the role of these organisations in promoting sustainability improvements in urban freight transport activities. The in-depth analysis of the activities carried out by influencing organisations shows why it is important to include them within the scope of urban freight measures and policies: i) they help to overcome the inertia inhibiting the implementation of sustainable urban freight transport initiatives, and ii) they have a connection to many goods receivers as well as the leverage to influence and possibly unite them. Moreover, influencers often have available resources to invest in new infrastructural solutions or processes and the motivation and incentives to carry out these initiatives, thus allowing this engagement to be beneficial both for them and the sustainable development of cities. The results of this thesis provide insights for policymakers about forming policies and regulations to stimulate the engagement of influencers in urban freight transport. This research illustrates to the influencing organisations themselves that they can play a valuable role in the future trajectory of urban freight transport development, as well as examples of ways to change urban freight transport to be more sustainable.

An exploratory study of the scope for receivers to influence urban freight consolidation through changes in their procurement practices.2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Purpose: During the past 5-10 years there has been an increasing interest in urban freight activities due to desire to reduce the environmental impact of freight movements in cities while at the same time maintaining efficiency. One way that has been promoted to achieve this has been the urban consolidation centers. However, some of these initiatives have been argued to be costly and their take up has been limited. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the research on receivers by comparing two organisations that provide procurement services - one in the public sector and one in the private sector. Potential differences exist between public sector and private sector procurement behavior and the research will explore this and consider the possible importance of intermediary organisations that can provide a link between the receivers and the carriers.

Research Approach: The paper adopts an exploratory research approach based on a review of relevant literature about transport purchasing and the purchasing behavior of managers in the public and private sectors. This review is then supported by several in-depth interviews. Following the interviews two case studies have been prepared one concerned with public sector procurement and the other with the private sector. These case studies are summarised in the paper and similarities and differences are considered.

Findings and Originality: Most urban freight research has focused on carriers. However, receivers possess considerable supply chain power and their decisions can strongly influence urban goods deliveries. This research identifies some important features of the role played by organisations which are neither receivers nor carriers but instead play an intermediary role within the urban supply chain.

Research Impact: In particular, the focus of this paper is on the procurement patterns of public and private organizations and potential difference between them. Potential impact of this work would be the contribution to the knowledge about the receivers’ side and their purchasing behavior in relation to the freight generation aspect of urban freight. This study can contribute to the knowledge about consolidation of the goods delivered to the receivers and how the receivers or those organisations working with receivers can trigger it by their procurement practices.

Practical Impact: Practical impact can be the knowledge on the influence of goods consolidation activities via changes in organization procurement practices.

Business Improvement Districts as important influencers for changing to sustainable urban freight2020Inngår i: Cities, ISSN 0264-2751, E-ISSN 1873-6084, Vol. 97, artikkel-id 102558Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the ways in which Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) can promote initiatives that lead to more sustainable urban goods movements in urban areas. The qualitative research was conducted by studying eight BIDs in three cities and in three countries - all the BIDs studied had considered or taken actions related to urban freight and sustainability. The results show that BIDs in different countries have similarities and differences in their organisational structure and functions, the main services provided and readiness to promote initiatives related to urban freight improvements. We identified that differences in their accomplishments relate to their motivation, awareness of the scope to influence urban freight and the extent of their collaboration with local and city authorities concerning urban freight initiatives. In general, we suggest that BIDs have the potential to act as important influencers in urban freight as they (i) unite the receivers and encourage them to address joint operations that bring economic and environmental benefits (ii) give the receivers the possibility to implement changes through the power of collective action (iii) facilitate the dialogue and collaboration with local and city authorities. As a result, we suggest that the measures directed to BIDs on improving urban freight can have much more significant return on time and funds invested than if invested in a single businesses and organisations. Our recommendation to BIDs that would like to reach higher level of accomplishments is to ensure stakeholder engagement including engaging and collaboration with local authorities and to demonstrate their willingness to take a lead.

The role of intermediary organizations in influencing urban deliveries to receivers/establishments2017Inngår i: / [ed] Eiichi Taniguchi and Russell G. Thompson, 2017Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Most urban freight research has focused on the need to change the behaviour of transport operators (carriers) either through incentives or more commonly through regulation. In the past few years researchers have started to address the scope to involve receivers (mainly retailers) in the reduction of urban freight trips. Typical initiatives include joint procurement or the possible use of consolidation centres. However, this focus on carriers and receivers potentially ignores the role of intermediary organisations that can strongly influence the patterns of urban freight movements and the way in which deliveries are made in urban centres. These intermediary organizations cover a wide variety of types including: Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), public sector purchasing coordinators that establish framework contracts and in the private sector - facilities managers. The paper explores the activities of 10 intermediary organisations in Sweden, UK and USA. An exploratory case study approach has been adopted and the activities of the organisations are summarised in order to enable acomparative assessment to be made. Findings support the contention that intermediary organisations have a powerful role to play in influencing urban freight demand and that their ability to bring together individual receivers is a significant opportunity for achieving more rapid and profound changes in urban freight flows and vehicle movements. The scope for changing procurement in both the public and private sector is also highlighted as one outcome of the research.

EVALUATION OF THE USE OF PUBLIC SPACE IN CITIES: A PILOT-STUDY OF COMPETING USES INCLUDING URBAN LOGISTICS2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: During the last decade, the establishment of distribution systems in cities has attracted an increased interest in the society as well as in academia. City-logistic implies distribution of goods critical to the everyday life in a flexible urban environment with regard to public- and industrial stakeholder interests. Based on different stakeholder interests, there is a standing need to evaluate the use of public space (PS) an urban environment. Yet, there is still an uncertainty about stakeholder interests as well as stakeholders rights to influence the use of PS in the urban environment. The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to evaluate the use of PS with regard to stakeholder interests.

Research Approach: A literature review of published research on city-logistics was conducted to create a framework for evaluation interests in PS. The conceptual framework includes the use of PS in urban environment. Based on the presented conceptual framework, stakeholder interests and rights to influence the usage of PS in an urban environment have been evaluated based on empirical data from a single in-depth case study of a Swedish city. Empirical data from participant observations and a survey questionnaire were used as empirical evidence in the evaluation.

Findings and Originality: The findings illustrate evaluation of stakeholder interests and rights to influence the use of PS in an urban environment. Main findings include enhanced understanding of different stakeholder interests. The paper contributes to the understanding of an issue is been important in implementing city-logistics, but still not much addressed in published logistics literature: the use of PS. The combination of published research on city-logistics, and analysis of different stakeholder's interests and rights to influence the use of PS provides interesting insight from which further research can be developed to enrich theory and management of city-logistics.

Research Impact: The paper contributes to existing research on city-logistics. In particular, it presents a conceptual framework to evaluate stakeholder interests’ and rights to influence the use of PS for implementation of city-logistics.

Practical Impact: Managers are recommended to sue the framework to evaluate stakeholder rights to influence to use of use of PS for city-logistic purposes.

Property owners as possible game changers for sustainable urban freight2022Inngår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management (RTBM), ISSN 2210-5395, E-ISSN 2210-5409, Vol. 45, s. 100745-100745, artikkel-id 100745Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Commercial activity and the underlying freight movements supporting them are essential to urban life. Unfortunately, urban freight has negative effects on sustainability and requires innovative approaches to enhance the positive aspects and minimize the negative ones. There is a common understanding among practitioners, with support from the literature, that the negative impacts of urban freight can be alleviated with better knowledge about the system and by identifying and engaging influential stakeholders. This paper focuses on property owners and their role in encouraging initiatives that lead to more sustainable urban freight delivery practices. Property owners engage in sustainability issues in real estate because they are interested in developing their properties to increase their attractiveness, competitiveness, and future market value. A shopping mall is an example of a property that generates a lot of freight traffic due to intense commercial activity. This paper studies the delivery patterns to a centrally located shopping mall in the city of Gothenburg and identifies how property owners could influence the delivery patterns of their tenants. A range of initiatives is proposed based on the literature and considering the delivery patterns observed. The results show that property owners can include freight deliveries in their sustainability strategy, focusing on fostering collaboration and communication between the tenants and promoting supply chain strategies that consider the type of activities that take place and the scope to reduce the number of truck movements and increase the efficient and sustainable goods deliveries.

INFLUENCERS´ IN URBAN FREIGHT –A  BUSINESS MODEL PERSPECTIVE2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how norm-setting third-party urban freight stakeholders, referred to as ´influencers’, may indirectly put pressure on carriers in the urban freight setting. The paper indicates that influencers have a potential to initiate considerable change in how carriers shape their business models. The results thus bring to light the often-overlooked power that influencers have in relation to the development of actor behavior along the urban freight supply chain.
