Abstract [sv]

During January and March 2010 a large number of roofs collapsed in Sweden due to heavy snowfall. The temperature was below zero and the wind came from the north and the east during the whole period. It was mainly steel and timber structures that failed. SP has created a database with information about 180 collapsed or seriously damaged buildings. The age of the these buildings spans over a 100 year period, but 60 % of them were erected 1980 or later. Most of the roofs were relatively flat. The main causes of the collapses was poor design and errors made during erection. A serious design error was that snow pockets had not been considered. It can be concluded that the snowfall was very heavy, but snow was not the main cause of the failures, but revealed errors and shortcomings. This coincides well with experiences made in earlier investigations on roof collapses.
