The research that is reported here deals with charring of timber members of spruce exposed to fire with thermal conditions of one-dimensional heat transfer as in semi-infinite slabs. The tests were conducted using a small-scale fire furnace. The members were exposed to ISO 834 standard fire of parametric fires representing natural fire scenarios of different degrees of severity. At standard fire exposure, the charring rate during the post-protection phase of initially protected members was compared with the charring rate of initially unprotected members.
