This report describes design considerations and performance aspects of a local area network implementation. It is based around an implementation of a low-cost local area network, called Allan, for the Clerc microcomputer system. The protocols in Allan are discussed, focusing on aspects concerning performance and suitability for implementation. Different strategies for protocol implementations are discussed, covering both topics that are common for all protocols and some that are specific for Allan. Some performance measurements are reported and discussed.
